i generally like anarcho punk where i can understand what the hell they're saying without having to sit there with a lyric sheet.

any suggestions? i guess what i'm looking for are bands that write like crass but sing like bad religion...

Listen to enough of it and you'll develop a knack for discerning the lyrics. Trust me, it's like drinking beer for the first time. Difficult, but eventually you're great at it. There are (mercifully) very few anarcho-punk bands that are anything like Bad Religion. I guess Naked Aggression are the closest, but they're still miles away.

Anyhow, here's some further ideas (although I don't know any bands that sound like Bad Religion and write halfway decent anarchist lyrics, so these are a little broader):

    Flux of Pink Indians
    Chumbawamba
    Crass
    Cravats
    The Mob
    Amebix
    Wat Tyler
Credit To The Nation (hip hop)
    Rubella Ballet
    Anarka and Poppy
    Blatz

Lots of crust and metal bands are intelligible and have lyrics that are a large part of the band's musical aesthetic.

i wonder whether the effective delivery of that lyrical content is important to them beyond the desperate scream aesthetic... whether we like the aesthetic is one thing, sure i do sometimes, but the substance of the politics etc. is different; straight edge bands like coke bust or blank stare are unabashedly judgmental, which is fine, i just like the energy of their style more than their 'fuck you get out of my life' hatred towards drinkers and sexually promiscuous people which i could take or leave. i prefer reason with rage to simple explosions of violence; I'm sure it's a touchy subject when it's your favorite genre... i like the message that bands like capitalist casualties want to put out there but i can't understand what they're saying as clearly as i'd like - not that it matters much, since plenty people like them and just know that they're saying things they agree with. i dunno... i listened to some naked aggression, they're pretty good, thanks for the rec

The reason behind most explosively violent grind band's musical aesthetic is that they think the world is a terrible place and we all ought to be ashamed of ourselves. I'd say that's a pretty good reason. Just playing devil's advocate.

Anyhow, enjoy Naked Aggression. Check out Blatz, I think you'll dig them too maybe.

Just listened to Burnt Cross. They sound very intelligible to me. And Subhumans, as has already been said, as well as their connected bands Ctiizen Fish and Culture Shock. Rudimentary Peni, perhaps, as well.

An unintelligible world full of hatred, injustice, poverty and other treats reflected in the unintelligible noise of (good) grindcore bands. You know, form-content. It does make sense. Although it isn't the only way to show one's anger, it is still a valid one.

Blyth Power are very tuneful, anarcho pop-punk and they are very intelligible (and witty).

The Pist? I just listened to ideas are bullet proof for the first time yesterday. Pretty clear shout.
MDC, Dave Dictor's yap is pretty darn intelligible.
Propagandhi, I personally prefer their earlier stuff.
    Zounds.
    Caustic Christ
    Dead Kennedys
Definitely seconding Citizen Fish and Subhumans
    I'd say the Chinkees
    Cock Sparrer
Fifteen or Crimpshrine if you can handle it, I personally love it.
    Try some Riot Folk maybe.
    Ryan Harvey
    Mark Gunnery
    Adhamh Roland
    oh my god, Mischief Brew.
