    Track List:

    01. Riot/Clone - Chumbawanka
    02. Anxiety Society - Always Tell The Punter
    03. Oi Polloi - Shhh-It
    04. The Bus Station Loonies - Charlie Harper
    05. The Chineapple Punx - Grateful
    06. Love, Chips & Peace - We Wish You'd Give Up
    07. Wat Tyler - New Labour New Chumbawamba

FIRST OF ALL... I like chumbawamba a lot... but this record is too funny not to like as well. (chumba once even had it posted on their website) The best song is oi polloi's version of Rudimentary Peni's Rotten To The Core (why is it that rock stars always seem to lie so much... etc.) with lyrics directed at the chumbas!

Fuck chumbawamba; they sold out like the bands they preached against early ago; now they play mainstream pop and dance music

I really have mixed feelings about Chumbawamba. Their early stuff is incredible, and the albums I've heard from after Tubthumper are great, but that little mainstream blip bugs me every time.

Chineapple Punx had a few splits as well but no full length that I know of. In 96 they did a split 7" w/ a band called Ciderfex, both have 3 songs on each side. Then in 97' they did another split, this time w/ a band named Urko. Hope this helps - Jon

this album rules and im glad a group of musicians had the balls to call out chumbawamba on their hypocracy. but then again, i own several chumba albums myself.

    so who's the real hypocrite?

Re: Anti-Chumbawamba EP - Bare Faced Hypocrisy Sells Records

in 2001 the band donated $35,000 to indymedia
    http://archives.lists.indymedia.org/imc ... 00769.html

so when was the last time a band decided to take advantage of a financial opportunity while taking real risks, maintain their activism, and give away half their earnings to radical projects? and what the fuck is up with the overuse of the word hypocrisy? spare me, what about the everyday hypocrisy of punks that embrace alcoholism and drug abuse, rampant sexism, the kids with limp wrist shirts who act openly homophobic, the blind support of the tobacco industry, the ridiculous overspending on patches and equipment without spending a fucking day on radical organizing, unchecked white male privilege, and on and on and on. calling somebody a hypocrite isn't a valid argument, its a fucking cop out

    from wikipedia:

    EMI Records

Chumbawamba signed to EMI in Europe in 1997. They had been involved with a compilation LP called Fuck EMI in 1989. The anarcho-punk band Oi Polloi (with whom Chumbawamba had previously toured and worked with on the 'Punk Aid' Smash the Poll Tax EP ) released an 'anti-Chumbawamba' EP, Bare Faced Hypocrisy Sells Records (Ruptured Ambitions 1998). The band argued that EMI had severed the link with weapons manufacturer Thorn a few years previously, and that experience had taught them that, in a capitalist environment, almost every record company operates on capitalist principles; "Our previous record label One Little Indian didn't have the evil symbolic significance of EMI but they were completely motivated by profit." They added that this move brought with it the opportunity to make the band financially viable as well as to communicate their message to a wider audience.[citation needed]
[edit] Band politics and mainstream success

In 1997, Chumbawamba's biggest chart hit, "Tubthumping" (UK #2, US #6), was followed up with "Amnesia", which reached #10 in the UK. During this period Chumbawamba gained some notoriety when, provoked by the Labour government's refusal to support the Liverpool Dockworkers Strike, they performed "Tubthumping" at the 1998 BRIT Awards with the lyric changed to include "New Labour sold out the dockers, just like they'll sell out the rest of us", and vocalist Danbert Nobacon later poured a jug of water over UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, who was in the audience.[1]

A few weeks later Nutter appeared on the American political talk show Politically Incorrect and advised fans of their music who could not afford to buy their CDs to steal them from large chains such as HMV and Virgin, which prompted Virgin to remove the album from the shelves and start selling it from behind the counter.[4]

EMI released the band's first collection album which featured a mix bag of songs from between 1985 and 1998 under the title Uneasy Listening.

Also in 1998 came a Japan-only mini album entitled Amnesia, consisting of country and western style versions of recent hits "Tubthumping" and "Amnesia" alongside old favourites like "Mouthful Of Shit".

As a millennium present, Chumbawamba sent out a limited edition single to everyone on their mailing list. The song was a shoop shoop style ballad entitled "Tony Blair", which read like a heartbroken letter to an ex-lover who had broken all his promises. The band would send another free single out two years later, this time a re-worked version of The Beatles' song "Her Majesty" to coincide with the Queen's Golden Jubilee, with lyrics denouncing royalty.

Chumbawamba released the album WYSIWYG in 2000 which included a cover of the early Bee Gees song "New York Mining Disaster". The single "She's Got All The Friends That Money Can Buy", was backed by "Doomed Flight 1721", a song that listed all of the people that, at the time, Chumbawamba would like to see disappear. The list of unfortunates included Tony Blair, Ally McBeal and Bono. Chumbawamba parted from EMI in 2001. The band later said that they got what they wanted from the deal with EMI: "we released some great records, we travelled all over the world, appeared on all these TV programmes, and we made loads of money, a lot of which we gave away or ploughed into worthwhile causes".[1]

To celebrate their 20 years together, the band made a documentary based on footage that they had recorded over the past two decades. Originally intended to be simply a compilation of their videos, the result was entitled Well Done, Now Sod off. The title was taken from an early review of a Chumbawamba record and the film included both lovers and haters of the band.

What about it? Again, none of those things validate Chumbawumba's actions

Oh well in that case its ok then, because I'm sure they didn't keep a dime for themselves...give us a break, if you love the Chumbas and admire their philanthropy fine no problem, but they're not on a pedestal beyond reproach,....anarchism questions everything on a constant basis, including oneself. Thus...

not saying what they did was valid at all, its pretty ridiculous, but my point is that the mere word hypocrisy is 1 not a valid argument in and of itself and 2 there are far more far reaching forms of it with more fucked up effects than the actions of one band. if we're looking to rid the scene/movement/community of hypocrisy there are far more worthwhile targets.

    How to answer this?

Ummm... oh, here! No they don't.

There we go! Their only "dance" album was Tubthumper (which I'm not going into here), their next album was experimental pop-style, and all their subsequent albums have been world and folk albums. Check your facts, buddy.

Is it just my fancy, or is there a scene in their film where they read hate mail they received? Ha, at least they took the money, made a subsequent bizzare and unsaleable album and ran...

Actually they did 2 albums for EMI Tubthumper and WYSIWYG, (possibly ANTI was as well, memory is hazy) and I thoughtn WYSIWYG (or What You See Is What You Get) Is a great album in itself. I listened to it a lot more then tubthumper, but again it had a silly single (She's got all the friends) and it wasn't enough to continue their mainstream success, but I highly doubt anyone except EMI gave a shit about that :)

I think WYSIWYG is a fantastic album, a truly great slice of pop-culture pastiche, and I think a good reaction from the Chumbas against their own sudden and inexplicable popularity on the back of an increasingly silly song. I think it was their last on EMI, I remember reading an interview at one point where the band fondly reminisced about being dropped from the label on the back of WYSIWYG, which they considered superior to Tubthumper. I think Uneasy Listening was on EMI.

Their "Revolution" Ep has to be one of the best English anarchopunk records.
Chumba's story is an odd one. On the one hand, their first two albums are, I think, much better and more political than your average anarcho band in terms of lyrics, but then they sold out.
For those who love early Chumba, I cannot recommend Passion Killers enough. They were a pre-Chumba band which very much laid the foundations of what was to be. Demo Tapes recently reissued their 1983 demo on vinyl with interviews, pictures and a funny band story full of anecdotes political activism at the time, the chaos of early punk gigs and so on.

As a person involved with the label who released this (Ruptured Ambitions/Propa-Git Records) and member of a couple of the contributing bands, I would like to set the record straight. The anti-chumbwawamba EP was not merely a belated reaction to Chumbawamba's affair with EMI Records, oh no, this was a tip of the iceburg.
It was primarily due to the group's treatment of fellow touring support bands (in particular, Oi Polloi, as already mentioned, plus Cardiacs and Bis, among others), as well as several member's superior and arrogant attitudes towards small, truly independant record labels of the time (1993).
The EMI thing kinda goes without saying these days and has, by all accounts been flogged and, one hopes, debated to death. This particular release was more of a personal reaction to the way it was disappointingly viewed many of Chumbawamba's mouthpieces were behaving in a saddeningly turncoat fashion. Their past (and much of what had been proclaimed in a very superior and full-on fashion) seemed to have been forgotten by the band who still, perhaps somewhat misguidedly, went under the name of Chumbawamba.
In short, it was a 20 minute retort by contributors who had all personally experienced a bitter let-down by a band who had turned their backs upon their past and where behaving in a fashion more akin to the supergroups they so successfully stripped bare and ridiculed on such wonderful releases as "Picture of Starving Children".
There's much more to it than this, of course, but we're amazed and delighted to see there's still such interest. All being written about in a short chapter by those who were invloved at the time in a forthcoming book.
"Bare Faced Hypocrisy Sells Records" is still relevant and STILL available on lovely vinyl.
