This thread doesn't make any sense anymore.

Looks like a tiny bit of confusion on the part of the admin team and/or regular posters. Just because there are two topics on tangentially related topics doesn't mean they should be merged considering it will merge all the posts in chronological order, which will break the flow of the two conversations. Now if two or more conversations were to evolve in a thread it would be different.

Bollocks. I know several people who are serious about things in their lives and they have made discoveries important to those pursuits.

A common mistake people make is to believe that being Discordian means never taking anything seriously. While irreverence is a major part of the philosophy, the key to understanding Discordianism is to realize that the central tenet is balance, not absurdity.

Another things to take into consideration is that balance does not mean a static state. Something can be balanced in many ways. A stick could be balanced by regular movements around a pivot.

I don't think he meant it like that. What I get from it is that taking certain things too seriously can cause a lot of unnecessary grief. When you can relax and look at things with a hearty sense of humor then you may discover that by turning it into a joke you render it no longer a threat. This of course can't by any means be applied to everything. There are a lot of things that are an obvious threat which should obviously be taken seriously, but on the same token a lot of the things people take seriously these days are trivial and cause a lot of senseless turmoil, such as religion, sexual orientation, gender roles, social encounters, and differences in opinion in general. Of course it makes sense for oppressed people to take oppression seriously or an engineer to take engineering seriously, but that's something else entirely.. or maybe it isn't. I don't really know shit, I just feel like I do sometimes.

That quote is from "ILLUMINATUS!" and it was completely out of the context of discordianism. I never claimed to be discordian or absurdist. I just find the thought of it rather delightful. I don't seek to fully understand it or take it seriously at all. I think I just like the chaos aspect of it. To me chaos is a perfectly balanced phenomenon, and when things get to orderly, like they are now, the result is imbalance on a vast scale, which some people would call total chaos. It almost seems like order is getting so out of hand that it's starting to mimic chaos which is a scary thing indeed.

I could go on and on about chaos/order but I'll just leave it at this. What the world needs, and is currently inevitably moving toward, is a brief period of perfectly orchestrated and balanced chaos that escalates and gains momentum until the dust can resettle into a more simplified order. I also realize that what I just said was a bunch of anarcho-philosophical mumbo-jumbo that's much easier said than done. But like I said, it's inevitable.. or at least it seems that way to me.

Oh, I was just making commentary on the quote, not ascribing that belief to you at all.
