I was just thinking about shows and stuff. I've been to punk shows in soCal and oregon, and I really thing punk is dying! I see videos of orange country punk in the early 80s and everyone is going crazy and being active! it's really hardcore! I go to shows in Socal nowadays (before i moved to the northwest) and the kids don't dance! They text and slightly enjoy the bands! I even see people with earbuds in connected to Ipods! I haven't been to as many shows in oregon but I see the same thing at the couple I have been to!

What gives! I blame my generations parents for not raising us to play outside and get dirty..

I totally agree with you. I also am originally from socal and I now live in Oregon and I've noticed the same thing. The socal punk scene (at least in Ventura where I grew up) is almost completely gone and most the people that used to listen and play in punk bands are all in metal bands now and they just get drunk and sing about stupid morbid shit. I've also noticed that they just stand around nodding their heads and if someone would try to start a pit they would all give them dirty looks. I recently went to a show in Portland and it was the same thing. Everyone was just standing around. I'm not saying that all Portland shows are like that cause so far that's the only one I've recently been too since I live about 3 hours from there but yeah those of us that still love the music and punk/anarchist ideals should try to revive the scene by starting bands and trying to organize our own shows and educate some of the youngsters and show them how things used to be.

Also it seems that the punk scene in Ventura CA has turned into just a party scene where everyone dresses "punk" and wears crust patches and shirts but they don't pay attention to the message those bands sing about. Most the "punks" seem to think that shows are just one big party and all they care about is getting trashed, fighting and giving each other STDs. I hate to use the term fashion punks but fuck if the shoe fits wear it. A lot of those same people with crust patches are also racist, sexist and homophobic. Its really sad cause when I was growing up the scene there was pretty strong but a lot of the older punks moved away and the scene went to shit. It's like if the morons in Jersey Shore wore punk "uniforms" then they would totally fit in with the Ventura punk scene.

First of all, as long as there are punks around, punk will never die. The scene will always be defined by the people who are active and take part in it, so this is YOUR chance to turn the punkscene back to the state of the "glorious 80's".

I know this feeling very well thou, but my experience is that it doesn't chance anything to just give up all hope. Sometimes the whole scene sucks, but things can change so fast.

If you want moshpits, make a moshpit. If you want politics back to punkrock, make a zine, an infotable at a show or a political punk festival with cool workshops 'n' stuff.

Organize with some people who feel the same way as you, and make punk a threat again (Yeah, I'm qouting PE).

A couple of years ago there were no moshpits in Denmark anymore...In this very moment, my body is still recovering fresh wounds from the show yesterday

Just because Ventura and Portland are a little wanting means punk is dying? :lmao: Please...the global punk community would very much laugh at the thought...

I never said that punk was dying. I said in my hometown things were changing and from what I've heard from a lot of other people in other places that some of the same things have been happening. I also said we can help change it back to how it used to be. You don't have to be a jerk just cause my experience is different from yours. When I said I agreed with the first post I was basically talking about the standing around part and was specificaly talking about MY experience. I also said that I wasn't basing the whole Portland scene off of one show.

punk isn't dying, trust me , but that doesn't , mean it's not getting wack.. the shows aren't the same as the 80's, even though i wasn't arround in the 80's doesn't mean i haven't seen videos and researched

somebody once said- "as long as theirs an angry kid with a guitar , punk will never die"

it will however continue to evolve and grow into different sub generas or whatever.

just like the blues gave birth to rock, and rock branched off into punk and the like, punk will continue to shit out offspring of its own

Sorry, but if you're trying to imply that punk is better than either of those genres, try again. Punks can record some daaaamn stupid music.

Of course it can. So can Hipsterindie and Emo though. indie music I respect a lot more than Emo (and when I say emo I don't so much mean emotional hardcore as I mean hot topic emo). It was just a friendly joke more than anything...

So then maybe you should have posted "The sad state of punk in my hometown" or something to that effect...having been around punk since the late 70's and everything in between I can honestly say that some of the best shows I've ever been to and/or played were in the last couple years. We (Diatribe) played a spectacularly fun show in Oakland at The Swamp w/ Deras Krig, The Helpless, Veraterisch & Death Crisis...a basement show thrown by our friend Daiki Kusuhara through Maximum RocknRoll...It was packed, sweaty, drinks everywhere, the PA was feedbacking so bad Vinny had to unplug the Mic between every song but FUCK did we have a great time and the crowd knew all the words to all the old Diatribe...in direct contrast to that, one night before we played at the Hazmat for the Oakland Pyrate Punx and other than Verbal Abuse killing it that show was pretty lame, badly attended, nobody really gave a fuck that we were a touring band and didn't have a clue who we were, we were handed $20 and in the same breath offered coke for said $20...

What am I getting at? That bad shows can be right next door and even hours removed from a great show, punk has a tendency to ebb and flow depending on the effort and passion exerted by those in a particular scene, but don't think for a minute that great shows and "scenes" aren't alive and well right down the road from dormant ones. If you find yourself getting jaded with the scene in your neck of the woods maybe it's time to step up and throw a show or two yourself...either that or hit the road somewhere that has a more vibrant punk community.

My apologies, wasn't my intention to be a jerk...I just find the generalizations that punk is somehow in a sad state to be highly exaggerated.

Some punk is much better than either one of those genres, and every style of music has it's fair share of horseshit.
