    Discordianism?

I just wondered if anyone on here has read any of Robert Anton Wilson's books or is familiar with discordianism. If you know what I'm talking about then what are your thoughts on it?

Its a pretty interesting concept. All I know about it is that a lot people call it a joke disguised as a religion when apparently it's actually a religion disguised as a joke. They "worship" (for lack of a better term) Eris, the greek goddess of chaos and have a lot of anarchist ideals. They're also super into the occult, Illumination, parapsychology, sex magick, and a bunch of weird prankster stuff.

Basically what I get from it is that its a weirdo anarcho-prankster version of "illuminati"

They have a lot of cool references on their website. It recommends a lot of awesome literature and has links to some pretty cool sites, including the billboard liberation front and other radical sites.

    http://discordian.com/discordian.html

If anyone is into occultism and weird shit, like I am, then I'd recommend reading some of Robert Anton Wilson's books if you haven't already. Namely, "The Illuminatus Trilogy" and "Cosmic Trigger"

It's super weird shit, I know, but it's interesting and I just wondered if anyone on here is familiar with it and what your thoughts on it are.

not at least because it's just a shitty hippie-libertarian trilogy still reviewd again and again by such enlighted professional writers like hakim "childmolester" bey and now rediscovered by some disorientated hipsters? mondieu! :o

wilson and the bey are the same generation, i believe they cooperated several times on writing projects turning pieces of half digested "eastern wisdom"/religion into weird fiction, kinda proved bestsellers for "spiritual" orientated/post hippie-mailorder publishers - pure bullshit for bored lifestylers, mixed with a little politix up to the point that "illuminatus!" promotes a-capitalism in all it's laissez faire the-outcome-justify-the-means-horrors - i still wish i had a laaaaaaarge torpedo... BOOM!

    Re: Discordianism?

All the occult wilson talks about is basically regurgitated from crowley, and gurdjief. If you're not familiar with crowleyan magick, sufism, or any of gurdjief's teachings then of course it sounds like bullshit, because it's wilson's interpretation of subjective teachings that were basically written in the form of perplexing riddles. This is conveyed more so in the "Cosmic Trigger" books which are non-fiction, describing his becoming an occultist adept, but also talking about a lot of Tim Leary's psychological theories which, oddly enough, were basically a scientific approach to what Don Juan was teaching Carlos Castenada around the same time period.

I think its pretty interesting stuff although I'm not really into the whole longevity/immortalist shit he was into.

santa bomber tricky dick gets an extra round of dudd 250kg-bombs they still keep in hanoi buried in his front garden or at least a load of b52 leftovers stuffed in his mailbox... i still want to see this thing doing the dancing betty!

    @ grinding halt:
oh no, don't tell me you believe in this bullshit alà wilsons adepthood or (pure polemic:) the bey's higher illumination via sufism - abuse of underaged boys included!
i was reading the first two parts of the trilogy, skipped cosmic trigger after a few pages of boredom - you are right: it's just the rehash of the rehash, tricksters like crowley and gurdjief weren't the first to make up weird stories for the bored upperclass, they learned from the blavatsky's and other offspring of the wave of spiritualism and even satanism in the nineteenth century - the initiators of this greesy mess of special entertainment were asia-travellers returning to europe with some writings and more or less adequate translations of texts on eastern philosophy and religion - most of these people hadn't had any religious interest and published their stuff without other than scientific intent.
to my knowledge crowley spoke only english and a little french - in his time in italy he needed a interpreter to deal with his troubles with the authorities - and even the mussolini-fascist threw him out of state - so how should he have learned from texts written in sanskrit, arabic or other non-european languages?
he was nothing but a trickster and imposter, taking bits and pieces from here and there to appeal the bored upper class daughters who made up the bulk of his followers - and he wasn't the only one, just read the stories about "golden dawn" and other consumer's groups with a "fine" interest...
to me the only good part of "illuminatus" is wilsons mentioning of the "old" workers movement traditions and a few funny ideas like this ss-division hidden in a lake and raiding a hippie-festival - but again: a shitty book full of almost dangerous cliche's and positions, starting with the "shock"-therapy for enlightment, a-capitalism and all this magic crab fitting well into the worldview of bored hipsters - where's my torpedo for fucks sake!

    Re: Discordianism?

Fuck all the occult shit. Even Robert Anton Wilson never claimed to believe in any of it. Just thought it had some interesting results, in the same way thaty taking LSD can. In saying that I'm not claiming to be a fan or not, just a fan of accurate representation.

That being said I'd love to know what people think of this article of Robert Anton Wilsons:

    Re: Discordianism?

dunno, this whole - let's call it esoterical - stuff suffers badly from one basic aspect:
you can't reject the official absolutism in sciences and common knowledge by simply replacing it with some (inverted) new absolutism - i still doesn't works, because there is no "absolute", maybe there never will be such a thing. human history is full of crimes - but there were great advances and progress too, today we hardly are able to imagine life only some 50 years ago - too bad that this progress is not as spectacular as the dark side of history.
so wilsons article is caught in the typical cliche's of the trade, comparing adolf h. (who never knew "nietzsches" writings - what he knew was an edited version of some leftover shards and unfinished notices of ol'crazy fritz)
with deSade (an aging enormously fat man even unable to reach his penis to piss, most of the time completely isolated from his surroundings and only raving in suffering against the conventions of his time),
the holocaust was no "universe" created by a few individuals - rather the improvised and already doomed-to-be-a -failure-start of a subculture already creating it's own downfall in a violent uprising of forced labour slaves and partisans against the arian masterrats - just read the reports of the growing resistance even in the death camps, or the autobiographies of people like auschwitz-commander höss, written by this corrupt and amoralist redneck deskperson during his trial in poland (he was hanged in auschwitz - what a waste!)
all we knew of the here and now is what we make out of it, using the cliches and standards of our time - atrocities like the holocaust are too gruesome to assess and besides that, there was always a official/scientific filter in use, producing the image of a perfect death-machine runned by demonic superhumans processing millions of innocents, finally stopped by the "good" people who, "of course" never had blood on their hands from hiroshima to haditha ect... - and with our infant-mind sadly we often try to make or simply accept "complete" pictures without realising most of the aspects that would be seen if we had the strength or patience to look deeper - maybe it's kinda remain of our primitive ancestry, living in constant fear because of the things in the dark or around the next corner - making up lots of delusions to find kinda release in "explanations" - too bad that these reality-crutches developed too often their own living, take religion as one of the worst examples...
wilson never left the vicious circle, his writings suffer heavily from their limitation on specific public demand (his works on crime, especially those on sex-related crime are abysmally bad) and of course of the scene-typical cliches like dr. leary's drug-business - it seems almost like a new religion to me...)
the very same cultural background made charlie mason "man of the year" after he spit out some half-digested society-critiques during his trial in the US - or blew up the german RAF to be the elite of anarchist resistance against the new fascist state - just because of the lack of counter-orientation and true examples of resistance and counter-culture?
guess we have to stop believing in the self-knitted myths of writers trying to make a living out of their raving still imprisoned by the old regime.

    Re: Discordianism?

Ok cool. That's a few ways of looking at it haha. I reckon in that essay some of his examples of writers and events are poorly linked to his arguments like you said. I do think he touches on some fundamental concerns about human brain function which would be as important post-capitalism as they are now. I think some of the implications of what he says about this relate in a pretty heavy way both to how individuals in power structures can allow themselves to commit acts of oppression (or at least to support them), as well as how opressed people allow themselves to ignore or not even realise they are being opressed. This is one of the fundamental attrocities committed by the fourth estate, that it is used to negate the need for physical coercion (police and military) by convincing people to behave in ways desired by the priveleged seemingly of their own "free" will (and calling it freedom). I think people will be in a much better position to organise resistance and revolution and produce a counter "culture" (if the will to equality requires a set of cultural practices so be it - I'm ok with punk music being one of them haha), if they are aware of the psychological and neuro-biological processes at work within the minds of humans who are unwittingly supporting authoritarianism, and who might otherwise not if they were aware of their actions. I'm not saying that this article is somehow an authority on this, but I do encounter a lot of resistance by some anarchists to broadening their scope of enquiry in an attempt to strengthen resistance.

Anyway I think one of the dangers of judging an author by their body of work is that authors like other people change and go through different periods of awareness (although I concede that often they contradict themselves in an attempt to sustain a line of reasoning which is no longer valid, out of some egoistic dedication to consistancy if not just keeping up appearances for financial reasons.... but anarchists can be just as guilty of this as anyone else hahaha... myself included). Honestly I haven't read any of RAW's work on sex-crime and so I can't speak for or against them here, although I fail to see how they are relevant to the cogency of this essay.

Despite that I agree that when it comes to the physical act of resistance (organising, communalising, attacking etc), many authors of more esoteric work seem to lack the kind of proactive rigour I respect. Although the same could be said for anarchist authors I have met who write primarily on these topics. Academia can be just as slothful no matter which side of the academy you stand in haha.

I don't think it hurts to look at some alternative ways of approaching pathways to resistance if it can bolster our ability to "practice" it. I for one have become a more powerful force for resistance as a result of some of the things I have learnt from writers who are more analytical than practical, Wilson included.
