Well My Way wasn't his way as in it was Sid rather than John, and it was called punk in the 70-80s, and not less political, really. Less formalised, perhaps.

Oh, Punkmar beat me to it. Bands I listened to around '79 was Ruts, Clash, Crass, DKs, UK Subs, Discharge, Zounds, Angelic Upstarts, SLF - these all very political, and even bands like Sex Pistols and Buzzcocks put out a few political tracks. Why you say punk was less political back then, is it just cos they were not called 'anarcho'? Also nobody had mohawks and why the fuck you say John Lydon is racist? Didn't he collabrate on a bunch of music with a black guy? Odd thing for a racist to do, init?

Well maybe different elsewhere, but in UK 75-83 there was hardly any mohawks, and most punk bands, and punks, were political. This is a fact. RAR, CND, anti-Falklamds, miners strike, there was a lot of punks involved, and I don't think I ever saw a mohawk, which were called mohicans, btw, til about 1981. Even the it was really rare, like maybe one person ever other gig.

Yes, he beat up a black man because he didn't like his music and said he was acting black. He may have not been racist back in the 80s or 90s.

That's pretty shaky Ben, not saying it didn't happen, but it sounds one sided. Why would anyone get pissed for being praised? Unless the praise was bestowed in a sarcastic manner... got anything else?

None of these links prove anything Ben, trust me I am not one to defend anybody in the Sex Pistols, quite the opposite in fact, but these allegations don't ring true to me...even if the asshole that was with Lydon really said "your problem is your black attitude" how does that make Lydon the racist? The first link you posted above actually goes a long way to disprove the entire incident... most of those bands are hipster indie bands and they were getting publicity from the entire affair.

Calling a man with black grandchildren a racist is a bit silly.

Not necessary. You can be a bigot and have children that are not bigots. A homophobe can have a gay child. However, considering the comment appears not to have come from Lydon it may well mean that the guy's just a wanker and not necessarily a racist wanker. I think Lydon has done sufficient in the past to give credence to the idea that he is an utter idiot.

Try reading his autobiography. Your opinion of him might change. I read Penny Rimbaud's at same time. I came away thinking John Lydon was honest, down-to-earth kinda guy, and that Penny Rimbaud was just a pretentous asshole.

What he said about Muslims and Arabs is fucking racist. He doesn't mind how Palestinians are treated because Arabs don't have democracy and deserve what they get...

The guy probably is a racist and a sexist, means nowt to me since I already thought he was a toolbag and an unwarranted figurehead.

I read a little bit of Rimabaud's autobiography and The Diamond Signature. I will agree with him being pretentious. Basically indecipherable. Pointless. I can't imagine my opinion of Lydon would change much. I'm judging him by his actions - advertising butter, going on 'I'm a celebrity...' and then storming off in a huff. He's seems an arrogant fuck, with little to justify his attitude.

For example, just from googling him:
