All great stuff if you ask me. Also the anti-folk scene stuff like Jeffrey Lewis and Kimya Dawson.

All I have up are my demo mp3s that I did by myself. The band mp3s should be up within a month, but the demo tracks are at www.myspace.com/athwbitt.

Can't stand it! Self-important, off-key warbling set to poorly appropriated country cliches? Why don't ya plug yer instruments in? ;)

I'm sort of kidding. I'm from Bloomington, Indiana which is the home of Plan-It-X Records and a sort of Mecca for folk punk. Growing up there inspired a healthy disdain in me for the folk punx, whom I generally regarded as bourgeois slummers completely disinterested in building an inclusive scene. They didn't invite townies to their shows and wouldn't go to townie shows (unless it was to get wasted and throw cups of ice at us). But I realize in hindsight that I was painting them all with one brush to a degree. I think a lot of them were just run of the mill hipsters who had found something a little bit more "edgy" to appropriate in punk rock than your standard hipster fare. Those kids kept me away from the ones who really gave a shit about anything other than looking cool. Too bad.

I still love a few Ghost Mice and Pipe Bomb songs. Sociopop82, I never would've considered Those Poor Bastards to be folk punk (more like death country?) but I fuckin' LOVE their sound.

Luckily, I'm from the UK, so the folk-punk scene here comprises the likes of the Levellers and Chumbawamba. As far as the US is concerned This Bike is a Pipe Bomb are smart, but there's not much else that floats my boat...

Chumbawamba made some incredible fucking records, mostly Pictures of starving children, shhh, and anarchy.

And I do agree that a lot of the folk punk/antifolk/riot folk crowd are stuck up little pricks. I'm from LA and there's no folk punk scene out here at all, so I don't see the bad side. It's sort of how hardcore punk was loved everywhere except by punks in Southern California, because they saw the scene form up close.

I see chumbawamba as using the bastard emi machine to help themselves. They didn't care about stardom, they cared about getting the message across, and I'd say they succeeded. They didn't become rockstars, they really didn't compromise a whole lot either. as annoying as TUPTHUMPING was, it at least got a lot of people to read up about their message.

After Tubthumping the band appeared on TOTP, a uk pop music programme, with loudspeakers and 'one hit wonder' t-shirts. It was around this time, too, that Danbert emptied a jug of water over British Deputy PM John Prescott's head. They were dropped by EMI soon afterwards.

    I like them.
