"The question of the title was that faced by the three main characters in this sitcom by Paul Shearer and Richard Turner. Giles, Judith and David (played in the original series by Richard E Grant, Amanda Root and Peter Capaldi) are three products of one of Britain’s finest universities, who have spent the past few years settling decisively to the bottom of the heap. Respectively an embittered wastrel estranged from his well-heeled parents, an unsuccessful actress with an increasingly dodgy CV, and an insanitory dullard who brings in the bulk of the trio’s meagre earnings by translating washing machine manuals, they hate each other’s company, but are thrown together by their straitened circumstances in a dank flat in unlovely Streatham. The pattern of hope and disappointment played out in each episode would be more tragic than comic, if the unfortunate characters were not deeply dislikeable in themselves."

The character of David is what makes the series so fun to listen to in isolation from the human race. He owns fluorescent green bicycle clips, plays SimTower four days straight, makes quarter-inch tape recordings of rivet presses and has arguments with Giles about socialism and the functions of modern capitalism.

 

So, like a glamourised '2 broke girls' then.

 

Not familiar with it. From what I read and YouTubed, the girls are working toward a quaint cupcake-based dream with a crappy job at a restaurant, and get to wisecrack their way through it without apparently getting fired. In "If You're So Clever...", the characters (save for David, who actually earns a monthly wage) are usually hoping their dole scams and off the books work will help them to afford alcohol and rent. Also, Giles (the spoilt brat) knows he's a douchebag and intends to ride the high-road to success by either exploiting the government, his old school chums or his family. To use the Seinfeld maxim, it's also a "no-hugging, no-learning" sitcom and throughout the series the characters become less and less successful.
