I live an outdoor lifestyle. I like to hike, climb, etc. Probably not what most of you would consider punk rock, but the ethics for most of the companies I deal with are superb. They are small cottage industries.

If you want to enjoy the outdoors without buying from large corporations here are some companies I recommend:

Gossamer Gear (make some of the best lightweight gear in the business)
    ULA (make good packs)
Mountain Laurel Designs (make THE lightest gear in the industry)
Hennesey Hammocks (make excellent quality camping hamocks)

Next are some larger companies that still maintain good ethics:
Misty Mountain (made in USA climbing equipment)
Black Diamond * (most of their stuff still made in USA, climbing/backpacking/alpine sport)
Montbell * (excellent quality and craftmanship in backpacking gear)
Mountainsmith (rugged durability, made in the US, on a push to go green with recycled plastic)

These companies produce some of the best gear in the market. Backpackinglight is another company that encourages a DIY ethic in the outdoor lifestyle. A great deal of gear that you need for outdoors can be made at home. You can make a stove and pot out of a tealight candle and a heineken keg can. You can purchase fabric and down and make your own sleeping bag. I don't know how many people here enjoy outdoor endeavours, but these are companies that you can feel good supporting. All support a Leave No Trace ethic in the wilderness.

*It should be noted that these companies have some gear made in China.

PLEASE NOTE: I am not in any way affiliated with any of these companies. These companies have proven to be reliable to me.

I reckon an outdoors lifestyle fits nicely with anarcho/crust...it certainly sits fine with my folk music fixation!

Do you know of any UK based cottage industries similar to the ones you mention? I'm a bit tired of paying OTT prices to Craghopper and Peter Storm...

yeah, I am homeless and I live sometimes under tent, so:
don't buy anything, small or big, all companies exploit workers and strive to become bigger than others.
if you need a bag, just take it without to pay, if you need sleeping bag, take it without to pay, etc.....
or if you like so much to pay, buy from people, every city has newspaper with ads. and internet has many local ads for such things.

aaaaand, I forgot to mention: there are "give for free, take for free" shops all over europe, in germany they call them Umsonstladen/freeshop, in internet it is: freecycle or gift economy. you can give what you don't need and you can ask for something what you need.
    example:

Fuck me, lad, I know where you're coming from...I spent two years sleeping in a tent when my friends couldn't provide a bed/sofa/living room floor for me...it's surprising how many charities will provide a free sleeping bag and tent, when you need it!
