I have to admit this, I don't necessarily watch television but I do watch two tv shows called Skins ( uk) and True Blood. I only watch them because I'm bored, they are just super commerical soap operas with popular themes:
Skins being: racial isssues, substance abuse, parties, sex, relationships, coming of age etc teen dramedy
True Blood being vampires, werewolves, witches, paranormal etc.

The only thing I'm concerned about is if there really is subliminal messages in tv shows? Like in True Blood, even though it's based off of book, it's just full of unnecesaary sex, and half nudity ( being they show everything but you genitals) and all the actors are super buff and worked out, and plastered with make up, and all fit the standards of what people are supposed to look like in this society, and even though the plot is mildly entertaining I feel like it's the same shti over and over again. Also, with Skins, even though I could understand relate to some of the characters, being a teen myself and finding myself caught up in similar shit, I researched and found out that in the uk when it first started it had a huge impact on the youth and had all these parties where they basically made money off of uptown kids going these parties, and alot of kids started to follow this so called skins party lifestyle.

Weird, and then the writers came to mtv to make a us version and make more money.

Though tv shows are midly entertaining, it's without a doubt secretly commercialism and made for profit definetely HBO is PORN, and it makes people so addicted to there damn shows because they are pornographic. ANd when people sit and wait for the next episodes of these shows, they are also being told what to act, and what to look like, especially youth.

I don't really watch these shows anymore, I only watched it to critique it and look for subliminal messaging like rumored. And I guess it is true, tv is a total scam.

But that's just my opinon, what do you think?

Television definitely can be a tool to with hold a certain standard of beauty. Most of televisions wickedness lies in the commercials, and in its ability to promote apathy like no other. I know a lot of people that dislike it for these reasons, but I myself enjoy a little. Really the only thing I watch on TV as of recently is this show called Bones. I'm hooked. I'll watch it while trying to fall asleep also, but that's really all. I'd say, for an enlightened mind, television isn't too dangerous, if you can sift through the bullshit (though it still can promote apathy) but it can, and does to damage on a massive social scale. Media of all sorts is a very good tool for brainwashing, but what are you gonna do? People are going to watch what they want to watch. The best stance you can take is attempt to educate about commercialism, consumerism, and just explain to people some of the down right bullshit that the news, etc. propagates. When it comes to news, fuck television. Show people independent news alternatives.

Also, fun fact, my cousin is on True Blood. I don't think she plays a big role (I'm not a fan of the show myself, I've only watched like half of an episode.)
She played Hadley Hale or something. She was on for 5 episodes.

More importantly, she was in Shrooms (according to IMDB). Worst anti-drug PSA disguised as a horror movie ever.

Back on topic, my house just cancelled our cable a few months back, and I couldn't be happier. The only channel we get is good for local news, and that's about it.
It's completely true that TV promotes apathy. It used to be that when I was bored, I'd see what was on the tube. Now, I'm reading way more books and spending way more time doing productive things, as opposed to watching that same Simpsons episode I've seen 50 times before. It's such a relief to not be constantly assaulted by ads, both the ones in the breaks between scenes in a TV show, and the ones within the show. I've been realizing more and more that everything on TV is an ad, or a message meant to reinforce a certain type of behavior. Before I stopped watching, it just seemed normal, now it seems much more manipulative.

The internet is no less guilty of the crime either, I have to admit. All people do now a days is go on Facebook and Twitter and make Harvard students rich. They say it's the free information highway, but physically reading a book will always be more credible and better than straining your eyes on some info website, seriously. Also, ISP's are just more corrupt corporations, supporting the right wing and limitting the websites you can go on, and supposedly blocking your service provider so you can switch to theirs.

    Privatized free controlled information.

I;d rather just watch television and face reality of that fact that I AM being brainwashed sometimes, then sit on here and think this is better.

I'm going to stop going on the internet so often, I'm tired of it. It's addicting, and I always find myself on here bored, because I really have nothing else to do. And the more time I spend on it, the more I'm spending money.

This is true. She was also on Movie Surfers on Disney Channel when she was a kid, and in a couple of Disney Channel movies, including that movie, "The Color of Friendship" That's my big claim to fame, haha.

television shows arent really that bad, as long as you dont think you should live your life like the people on them, teen dramas and romances have a negative impact on the world, if all the kids grow up learning about how the most attention craved, skinniest, or bitchiest kids get to be popular, then thats what theylle believe...

now the NEWS is where you run into trouble... its good to watch he news.. if you can see the slants, because every station, every brodcast has a bias... its important to know whats going on in the world, but dont just regurgitate news reports as facts without checking them

political satires and comedy shows.. to answer the question.. and fox news.. but thats just for when i need a laugh

Not bad to say ... I agree with something it.

Personally, I rarely watch TV. Among the Russian TV channels have is only two channels that i can be watch. It's a 2x2 and TNT, all the rest of full crap. Most of the time i read books, magazines or go out with friends. But still the best way to lift the mood is of course music. Punk music is a best alternative to television ;) . And of course a more reliable news I find and read on the Internet or newspapers.

Not just that, it empowers kids and makes them realize their life is whatever they want it to be. I got my kid sister into Crass by telling her the message is similar to Phineas and Ferb.

Saying we don't agree with television and the things it stands for, but watching it for a good laugh anyway makes us no different than those who are actually influenced by it. We are saying television is okay, and that is actually counterrevolutuionary.

I oppose all technology, but I can't escape it living under someone else's roof, where all they do is worship it.

Like my dad the other day asked me if i wanted a kindle, a kindle?

I DON'T NEED A KINDLE! I DONT WANT A KINDLE! I NEVER ASKED FOR A KINDLE! IM PERFECTLY FINE WITH READING ACTUALY BOOKS WHERE YOU TURN THE PAGES IN YOUR ACTUAL HANDS!

I didn't say this to my dad, I just said that to the corporations responsible for pushing down their consumer/production agendas on us, which are obviously wasteful and destructive to life, and acting like unless we have a computer, a cell phone, and a tv we are nothing.

This is why I spend all my time reading actual books and going to the library, and I'll probably stop going on the internet after this for a long time, the only reason I'm on it today is because I went to library earlier and couldn't find books I needed so I have nothing to do today but sit around and go to the park and shit, and write.

Technology, and all great material things and superficial ideas, and created to make us feel inferior. To make us feel impuny.

If you want to know more I suggest you read "The Culture of Make Believe" by Derick Jensen. By far one of the most shocking and moving books I've ever read. But it really sums up and explains things about this society and civilization that we don't see. And it supports the way I've always felt about this world.

We are basically in a civilized holocaust and the way we live is completely unsustainable and we have fallen out of our being.
