well, fat mike proves there are plenty of punks who believe in the government and the system... unfortunatly. I guess that is one reason why punk has spawned so many sub genres, lots of people can identify with it to some degree and try to build on the parts of it that most suit them.

Well I'm not saying I'm for the system at all. But I mean.. we're all consumers. There's no way around that unless you sit in the fetal position in one spot all day, not eating, drinking, listening, DOING anything, for the most part. Either that or you off yourself. You an be DIY all you want but that will only get you so far. Hell, having the internet is contributing to a big corporate system in itself. I just feel like some people give off that vibe that, basically, if you buy anything you're not punk.

But I think that really, what is bad about 'the system' is that instead of consuming it, most people let it consume them, and that's what's fucked up. If people are conscious about it and don't let they're lives get controlled by it, that's a step in the right direction. As much as I'm for anarchism, it's not like I see America becoming an anarchistic society anytime soon.

That's how I see it. And that can be punk too. I really don't think anyone has the say-so really to tell people 'what's punk' and 'what's not'. I call bullshit on that, because really, who are they to say? Only in a general way do I mean that. Lines have to be drawn everywhere of course, with the obvious and what-not.

That or go live off in the woods with no social interaction and hunting, gathering and growing everything yourself... this is NOT my idea of a good life, to be honest and I'll pass.

I'd agree with you there, but if we can make the 'public' aware of the inherent problems of the capitalist system an anarchist society will be a lot more easily attained in the future. We can sow the seeds now, if you will.

I hate the 'punk police', which is the term, I think, for what you're implying. Punk to me is a mindset and an ethic that I can't quite grasp completely, but for me involves: authenticity, honesty to oneself, unity and responsibility for one's actions.

In that regard I liken it to martial arts... someone thought something worked for them, stopped looking further and based an entire system off of it, then someone else came along and incorporated new stuff into the old style and create a different hybrid... then there's the McDojo's, dojo's that only exist to get money out of clients by basically allowing them to 'buy' their belts.

Neither really "punks" come from varying point of views,Anarchists,A-Political,Socialists etc
And there are plenty of anarchists that really have no fondness of punk at all,Alot of Hippies are anarchists as well.

Holy shit, and I here I was preparing to get completely shot down.

    Me too amigo, me too.

And that totally makes sense to me. After all, there's no real point in being an anarchist if you don't do anything about it. It makes sense to move towards change.

That's what they're called huh? I just call them assholes, normally, but that term works pretty damn well too. Ha. I really like how you said that though, because I think it's true too. Punk can't fully be grasped, no matter how much 'experience' anyone thinks they have. That was really well said. Because of how much people have brought into it, whether it was good or bad, some things are even contradicting if you try to grasp all of it. And I agree with you too, about the authenticity, honesty, unity and responsibility thing. Man you really know how to use your words! Haha.

You have to be good at something and if all else fails at least you're a good bad example... ;)

this reminds me of great quote from chumbawamba's web page years ago.
"no one is completely worthless, anyone can serve as a bad example"

I though it was alright, and I like how it tries to cover a lot. For years most punk docs would just do New York in '76, London in '77, and then BAM! straight to grunge and MTV pop punk. Most of my favorite bands are from the '80s, and they just would outright skip that decade. I'm glad to see more recent punk docs mentioning '80s bands and scenes, and of course, "American Hardcore" was dedicated to the '80s completely, although it kind of annoyed me that it cut off after '86. There were a lot of good bands that came after '86.

That's why I define myself as an crusty. I've never been a 'true punk', though everyone labeled me as one. And as for 'punk is not lost' I think you're wrong. Punk is lost, and we have to find the way to get it back.

    wut?

I mean, say what you like about the Pistols and Rollins band, and Billy Idol is a complete wanker, but emo? I don't know if you just forgot to mention why they were on the list aswel or whether you genuinely think Henry Rollins is emo, but I'm getting the impression that you picked the bands its cool to hate on.

It doesn't matter if some of the bands aren't ones you like or whether you disagree with certain points because the film wasn't created to convey YOUR opinion. People are ranting that certain bands aren't punk but the fact is that its a much debated topic. And whenever you create a film outlining whether or not punk is dead then the film's merit should not be based on the opinions conveyed within it, but how well those opinions are backed up. Its not about your opinion, its about how well you explain it.

I mean, look at Decline part 3, when you'd get kids saying stuff like "I don't associate with people who aren't punks", yes it was a stupid thing to say but the fact is that it is just the opinion of someone within the film. Seriously, guys, don't get so defensive.

    Hello people,

I don't know if this is the place to ask, but I hope I don't cause any problems and if I sound impolite I apologize in advance.

When I made that topic about punk, I was told to search about it on the boards but so far I've come across topics on which the most lengthy input on what is punk came from some guy named "NGNM85", the guy is so blinded by his own bias that he didn't even acknowledge it, besides he claims that people should read a Legs McNeil book on punk to know what it really is, so he actually said that we should read a book made by some guy whose sole purpose to create "Punk Magazine" was to hang out with his favourite band and to make people think they were cool and give them free drinks.

Yeah that Legs McNeil guy is the one and only (reliable) voice of punk...

Quantity is not the same as quality, I read somewhere this guy (NGNM85) claimed to have been into punk and researching it for about 12 years... so what? I could spend the same amount of years researching into the Pacific War between Chile and Peru/Bolivia but if I only read CHILEAN books about it without broadening my research to include the perspective from the other two countries involved then the quality of said research would be pretty questionable right? It was the same with this guy! Being a fan of the pistols and the clash he was never going to include other perspectives into his research, therefore making almost everything he said invalid.

I've read here the thoughts on some people who have been into Punk for a long time, however I'd like to know now:

What do you guys think punk is?

I'm aware now that everyone has their own definition of punk, and while I'm grateful for the thoughts of people around my age, I'd like to know what older punks think, since they've been longer into punk and might have more experience on it. I've already had the answer from two older punks here but would like to se what others think.

Punkmar77, why are you ignoring me? :S What did I do that pissed you off so much??? If I'm gonna be this accepted here then I guess I should just leave. :(

If I'm such a piece of shit and everyone ignores the things I ask there's no point in being an anarchist nor getting into punk anymore... :(

Call it a hunch, but I think it has to do with the fact you're a dummyburger with extra cheese.

If it's attention you seek, then yes there is no point in being involved in anarchy or punk. As if you were those things to begin with anyway.

What is punk? It's a genre of music. You're welcome.

    Hi everyone.

The user I mentioned in my previous post knows what I'm talking about, I'm not seeking attention just answers and it's not like I'm asking anyone here to do a complex mathematical calculation.

said user was a dick and got banned ages ago...

    'Punk' encompasses so many disparate and contradictory elements that; firstly, whenever one makes a definition of 'punk', its denounced from all sides;
secondly, such debates usually descend into scene politics, posturing and pissing contests.
Thus hesitancy for ppl to engage in a conversation around defining what 'Punk' is is largely due to the shitfighting that generally ensues.

    Well, I had no idea...

    Seriously. I. DIDN'T.

Wasn't it a hint for you guys that if I was asking such things that it was possible that MAYBE I DIDN'T KNOW the kind of shitfighting I'd start? If I had known I wouldn't have even made that topic in the music forum in the first place!!!

So in the end Punk is just a music genre and a aesthetic style right? the ideologies, rebellious attitude, politics and such are an "extra" added to it like when you choose to put ketchup or mayo or any other sauce on your french fries at a restaurant?.

Well then, I guess I have to apologize to everyone and especially Punkmar77... guess I can't blame him if he doesn't want to talk to me ever again, though it will obviously suck :(, not that many spanish speaking members hanging out here that much.

    Apologies to everyone.
