A friend just linked me this article. More than a little creepy, and just one more reason to quit smoking.

Hemoglobin is IN blood, so it's not just straight up blood they're putting in there.
What I remember from an Anatomy class I took is that hemoglobin can bond and neutralize harmful compounds.

But you shouldn't be smoking anyways :ecouteurs: -> :ecouteurs: -> :ecouteurs:

not wanting to support multinationals is an argument big enough to quit smoking when you say you're an anarchist.... thats what convinced me to quit.

hemoglobin is the stuff in the blood that transports the oxygen from the lungs to the body parts - i wonder what they want with the stuff in cigarette filters - it sounds somehow useless unless it would enter the blood stream. maybe it's just a cheaper way to glue the filter in the cigarette paper - like the food industry uses lactose (the "sugar" in the milk) for 1000 + 1 reason, from pure optical improvement to the use as binding agent (making a problem for people with lactose intolerance).
too bad that vassil isn't avaliable right now - he worked some time for the company that produces "benson" - philipp morris? - one of his colleagues was a food chemist and this guy was curious about the additions the company put into the tobacco and the paper of the filter cartridges - and found 83 carcinogenic chemicals - the company admitted 46! there were chemicals to blow up the tobacco fibres - so they needed less tobacco to fill the cartridge, stuff to decolour the nicotine that got caught in the filter... most of the stuff is sheer cosmetics.
i agree, smoking is stupid, beside the food that's not produced because tobacco is produced - the dangers to health (not only of the smoker) and the support for criminal companies is really enough reason to quit!

    You've got part of it.
Hemoglobin transports oxygen in the blood stream to get it to where it needs to go. The chemical carbon monoxide, binds with hemoglobin in the same way that oxygen does, except the human body can't process it,
    making it highly toxic.
It's also present in cigarette smoke, just look at the side of a cigarette packet. I don't know about other places, but in Canada, it's listed on the side of a pack of cigarettes, along with formaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide (which is common in "suicide pills", the same poison used in the Jonestown Massacre).
Although it doesn't say so in the article, I'd have to guess that the pig hemoglobin is present to try and soak up some of the carbon monoxide.

    >_< Because filtering out a big of carbon monoxide makes smoking so much better for you. The tobacco industry is ridiculous.

If this honestly gets people offended enough to want to quit smoking...Um...Rip the filter off?

If something is unhealthy to begin with, there is no correcting it.

It's easier to just grow the tobacco yourself, or buy it from the Amish. Fuck giving a vice up just because a company (directly or indirectly) forces you to. It only shows your ability to give in to power.

i heard of the tobacco the amish are growing, it's a genetically enhanced breed with almost no nicotine - the industry wasn't interested because of this - because less nicotine means less addiction/less profit.
I think it was "marlboro" who got sued in the u.s. for artificially increasing the nicotine content and with this getting "the customer" even more addicted...
the theory about the hemoglobin as enhancement for the filter sounds reasonable - but how much of the stuff is necessary to be effective before becoming sated with carbon monoxide/ all the other poisons and most of them are water-soluble, so air moisture and the wet environment of the mouth will dimish the effect too...

quit smoking and start growing tomatoes! (and they are Solanaceae/from the nightshade family too)

That's like ordering a big mac, and throwing away the patty, except worse for the person consuming it.

Also, it could be argued that developing a vice because a company (directly or indirectly) forces you to only shows your ability to give in to power.

I think the rudimentary problem here is, who knew filters had hemoglobins in them? If I don't know what's in something I don't want to be consuming it, let alone several a day. If they can sneak something such as that into filters who knows what they could be sneaking into the tobacco!
