They aren't signing to a major label they are getting free shit. This world is a capitalist world and I know for a fact everyone on this board including myself has supported capitalism in some way or been helped by capitalism and none of us are any less anarchist or socialist or whatever. We don't live in a perfect fucking world, we live in a horribly fucked up world and if a band like MG can get free shit from some of the people helping to fuck up the world without having to be slaves to them, then that is a pretty nice deal. Face it folks we need to be realists and not perfectionists. Look at anarchism in the real world rather than just a world we want to see.

Sure I am not happy about Scion or Toyota or what they do but I am always happy to hear new music from local bands like MG and it is fucking hard and expensive to put out a good quality record. I would rather Scion be spending their money on grind music than wasting it on building shitty cars for shitty people. So far though MG has not sold out to Scion and I doubt they will.

If you are pissed off and angry then go after Toyota and Scion not MG.

I heard Magrudergrind is buying Toyotas for everyone that attends their shows. They're like Grind-Oprah.

I wonder if I wrote them a letter if they'd pay for my crack whore sister to go to rehab? Damn... I don't have a sister. Help me come up with something that'll get them to do an episode with me.

Why because you deem it ok? Fuck that, we'll call bullshit where we see it, and they are not just letting Scion stamp their fucking corporate logo on their ideas, they are letting a corporation defile the collective DIY community. Your arguments are paper thin....

If a nazi handed me his megaphone and said have at it, I wouldn't split hairs over who bought the megaphone. I'd just use it to make them wish they'd never handed it to me in the first place.

I wouldn't accept anything from a Nazi and I'd make him wish he never attempted to hand me anything in the first place....but that's just me...

    Re: magrudergrind + toyota

Ok yes they have a scion logo on their album but they haven't sold out. I actually know these kids, known 'em since back in the Don't Send Humanitarian Aid To the Church and Religious Baffle E.P.s They aren't selling out their ideals or beliefs they are simply getting free shit from a big corporation without having to do much in return other than have that little stamp. It is not like you wanma go out and buy a Scion now, do ya? I doubt anyone in the punk community is going to get a Scion...they are marketing up the wrong fucking tree. I don't like seeing Scion on the label for sure but to me it is just more music from MG and I being a intelligent individual (not saying anyone here is not intelligent or anything like that just talking about myself and only myself) can see the logo and just ignore it. If the music is good that is the important thing. Now if the music sucked and MG had started selling Scions or promoting Scion in anymore than just the records than I would be fucking angry as hell. I haven't yet gotten the E.P. from the internetz because I have a new Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen/Sam Jones album (Jazz bassists) that I am loving (grindcore is just one of my passions) but from what I have heard via samples they are still the same fucking brutal grind that we have all come to know and love.

We cannot be fucking purists all the fucking time because that shit doesn't work. If we are going to go after MG then we should look at ourselves and what we support. Look at the shit we do in our daily lives that is way worse than a scion logo on a free record. Fuck probably most of us pay taxes of some sort and that is going to a lot more planet fucking shit then Toyota could ever muster.

Lets look and listen too Crusher as Crusher not as Scion Records Presents Crusher. Listen too the songs and enjoy them or maybe you don't like that shit and fine but just take it as an album. What do people think of the songs on the album not the people that funded the thing.

PS: I hate to be a hard ass but I love Avi and Chris (I barely know A.J.) and gotta stick up for mah homies unless they turn into pop stars! :D Anyway lots of love to everyone.

    Re: magrudergrind + toyota

So they aren't playing shows sponsored by Scion/Toyota as well as putting out the music? If my best friend on the face of this planet did this same shit, I would call them on it and in fact have called people that I trust and love on questionable ethics and I would expect the same if I suddenly turned my back on what I have stood for. I'm not telling you that they should no longer be your friends or that the entire DIY community turn their backs on them, I am saying however that this shit does not fly, whatever excuse of using the system to beat the system you might want to use. Oh its ok, because they got the corporation to sponsor their anti-corporate propaganda? If you don't think that aggressive public relations and marketing have any effect whatsoever on people that are 'in' or 'marginally in' to the different types of 'underground' music that Toyota has been dipping their rotten hands into, then you must have never seen a formerly radical anti-system hippie activist cheerfully driving BMW's headlong into a yuppie scum existence.

I'm just waiting to see when other multinational corporations like McDonalds or Shell realize the potential of Toyotas marketing style.
The shit that Scion is doing right now is just trying to influence the sub-cultures that have traditionally criticised and fought back against these kinds of corporations that harm and destroy the planet, animals, humans etc.
This may not affect the older punks right now but it is sure as hell going to affect peoples reactions to shit like this in the long run.
I can already see it in my eyes, crusties with nascar logos on their vests and the traditional McMurder patch has changed to McDonalds.
And seriously, what is this shit about using the fact that Magrudergrind didn't receive any money and that Scion did this for free, nothing is free in this world, Toyota is a huuuuge corporation and the money they spent on producing ep's and
organizing their festivals is like piss in a ocean to them.
Magrudergrind did not come out of this as a winner nor a opportunist, they came out as sellouts who would give out their beliefs just so that they could do a "free" ep.

Sure, think about it in the long run.
If peoples reactions and attitudes change for the milder towards Scion and Toyota, then younger kids and punks growing up in that kind of enviroment will be influenced by that.
I'm not saying everyone will be like this or think like this, i'm saying that thats what scion is trying to do here.

When Anarchists and Punks make music... it sounds like shit.

When SOLD OUT Anarchists and Punks make music... it's just shit.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stuff like this is why I created the "Punk = Change" topic, because in my humble opinion, if people think Punk stands for nothing, then yeah what this grind band you talk about (MG) did couldn't be rejected, in fact they should be cheered for it! If punk itself is nothing but rebellious nihilism then what grounds could there be for criticizing such decisions? NONE.

But I want to think that punk was born with a purpose, that the very essence of punk is a positive change of society towards a better direction. I refuse to believe that it was made just to make quick bucks to get drunk, drugged and act like an asshole.

I know I'm an ignorant when it comes to punk and its history, but I hope I'm not wrong...

What a load of bollocks! Any band who will willingly let a corporate sponsor fund their musical efforts just because they "get free shit" is not worth our time and energy, to be honest. I understand how much it costs to record a album and I know for a fact that it isn't an easy process. But by laying on your back and letting the big corporate monsters like Toyota do all the hard work for you, you are completely selling out to the original D.I.Y. ethic that you're supposed to be about in the first place.

I'm sure people wouldn't be in this topic defending those bands if they were sponsored by McDonals or Nike so why should Toyota be any different? Is it because they're "less evil" because they sponsor our scene? Bollocks, that's exactly what they want you to think.

i see good and bad to it, people buy cars obviously more than they need and use them more than they need as well.
if i were to buy a car would it be because of support, nope.
would i go to a free show or take a free record, sure.
the scion a/v is a bit intrusive on the cover but its a shit looking cover to start with.
the whole thing kinda confuses my as to wether i'm for or against but i lean toward pro as its free money, i have the ability to make descisions.
if they arent ramming the company down peoples throats its not as bad, all things have a cost on the enviroment including these computers we are using,
i heard magruedergrind though i didnt get into them much, shit i wore a DRI tshirt today.
my 2 cents is free money is cool, cars suck but are handy for long distance and some work if used responcibly(i have a bus pass and no car),
car fuels need to be fixed obviously to something less harmful... its confusing to me, until today i had never heard of scion.
vehicles haul gear, i'd hate to carry amps, pa's, instruments but you dont need a vehicle to go 2 blocks or just drive around for something to do.

So we've had several threads in the past about this disgusting trend in crust, punk, grind, metal etc. here are some new bands to add to that list:

Also going to merge older posts concerning Scion and their douchebaggery under this post.
