I talked about it yesterday, after the tsunami in japan 2 nuclear power plant were on fire, the cooling system is defectuous and they had to release radioactive vapor in the air.... Now it's confirmed, an explosion happenned right now. We're close to another tchernobyl

The cooling system failed at three reactors of the quake-hit Fukushima No. 2 [Daini] nuclear power plant Saturday, the operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.

The company, which has already scrambled to deal with radiation leaks at its Fukushima [Daiichi] No. 1 plant, notified the industry ministry that the failsafe system at the No. 2 plant stopped functioning as the temperature of coolant water has topped 100 C.

10.45pm GMT: Now there are reports from nuclear plant operator Tepco that the Fukushima Daini plant has lost cooling to three of its reactors.

A huge explosion has rocked a Japanese nuclear power plant damaged by Friday's devastating earthquake.

A pall of smoke was seen coming from the plant at Fukushima. Four workers were injured.

Japanese officials say the container housing the reactor was not damaged and that radiation levels have now fallen.

A huge relief operation is under way after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami, which are thought to have killed at least 1,000 people.

The offshore earthquake triggered a tsunami which wreaked havoc on Japan's north-east coast, sweeping far inland and devastating a number of towns and villages.

apan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan has declared a state of emergency at the Fukushima number 1 and 2 power plants as engineers try to confirm whether a reactor at one of the stations has gone into meltdown.

Tests showed at least three patients evacuated from a hospital near the plant had been exposed to radiation, public broadcaster NHK quotes local government officials as saying.

The patients had reportedly been waiting outside the hospital for rescue helicopters when the explosion hit the plant.
Evacuation zone expanded

Television pictures showed a massive blast at one of the buildings of the Fukushima-Daiichi plant, about 250km (160 miles) north-east of Tokyo.

A huge cloud of smoke billowed out and large bits of debris were flung far from the building.

The Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco), the plant's operator, said four workers had been injured.

The Japanese government's chief spokesman, Yukio Edano, said the concrete building housing the plant's number one reactor had collapsed but the metal reactor container inside was not damaged.

He said radiation levels around the plant had fallen after the explosion.

Officials ordered the evacuation zone around the plant expanded from a 10km radius to 20km (12 miles). The BBC's Nick Ravenscroft said police stopped him 60km from the Fukushima-Daiichi plant.

Plans are being made to distribute iodine, which can be used to combat radiation sickness, to residents of the evacuation zone.

Japan's nuclear agency said earlier on Saturday that radioactive caesium and iodine had been detected near the number one reactor of the power station.

The agency said this could indicate that containers of uranium fuel inside the reactor may have begun melting.

Air and steam, with some level of radioactivity, was earlier released from several of the reactors at both plants in an effort to relieve the huge amount of pressure building up inside.

Mr Kan said the amount of radiation released was "tiny".
Cooling system failure

Nuclear reactors at four power plants in the earthquake-struck zone automatically shut down on Friday.

In several of the reactors at the two Fukushima plants the cooling systems, which should keep operating on emergency power supplies, failed.

Without cooling, the temperature in the reactor core rises, with the risk that it could melt through its container into the building housing the system.

Pressure also builds in the containers housing the reactor.

Tepco said it was pumping water into the Fukushima-Daiichi's number one reactor in a bid to cool it down.

The reactors the plant are Boiling Water Reactors (BWR), one of the most commonly used designs, and widely used throughout Japan's array of nuclear power stations.

Analysts say a meltdown would not necessarily lead to a major disaster because light-water reactors would not explode even if they overheated.

But Walt Patterson, of the London research institute Chatham House, said "this is starting to look a lot like Chernobyl".

He said it was too early to tell if the explosion's aftermath would result in the same extreme level of radioactive contamination that occurred at Chernobyl.

The explosion is likely to have been caused by melting fuel coming into contact with water, he told the BBC.

The 8.9-magnitude tremor struck on Friday afternoon off the coast of Honshu island.

It was nearly 8,000 times stronger than last month's quake in New Zealand that devastated the city of Christchurch, scientists said.

Some of the same search and rescue teams from around the world that helped in that disaster are now on their way to Japan.

As relief workers begin to reach the earthquake zone, the scale of the damage is being revealed.

One of the worst-hit areas was the port city of Sendai, in Miyagi prefecture, where police said between 200 and 300 bodies were found in one ward alone.

The town of Rikuzentakada, in Iwate prefecture, was reported as largely destroyed and almost completely submerged. NHK reported that soldiers had found 300-400 bodies there.

Chief government spokesman Yukio Edano said it was believed that more than 1,000 people had died.

NHK reports that in the port of Minamisanriku in Miyagi prefecture, the authorities say that about 7,500 people were evacuated to 25 shelters after Friday's quake but they have been unable to contact the town's other 10,000 inhabitants.

A local official in the town of Futuba, in Fukushima prefecture, said more than 90% of the houses in three coastal communities had been washed away by the tsunami.

"Looking from the fourth floor of the town hall, I see no houses standing,'' Kyodo news agency quoted him as saying.

The day after being hit with the devastating one-two blow of an earthquake and tsunami that so far has killed more than 500 people, Japanese citizens were confronted with news of a million residents in the hardest-hit Northeast being left without water, almost a quarter of a million seeking refuge in shelters—and perhaps most alarming, an explosion at a nuclear plant that could hugely amplify the scale of the disaster.

The blast, which occurred at about 3:30 p.m. local time at Fukushima Daiichi, one of two nuclear plants in Fukushima Prefecture, released radiation into the air, and raised the specter of a meltdown. Billowing white smoke blanketed the entire complex. Tokyo Electric Company confirmed four workers were injured, and Japanese TV reported that the men had been trying to cool a reactor by injecting water into its core. If a reactor core overheats and a meltdown occurs, that would release a large amount of radioactivity into the reactor’s containment building, resulting in serious contamination. Prime Minister Naoto Kan described the precarious nuclear situation as the government’s top priority—beyond the havoc actually caused by the quake and tsunami.

Japanese authorities had been struggling to cool core radioactive material at the nuclear Fukushima plants, and news agencies earlier reported that radioactive fuel at one plant had indeed melted and leaked. Reports said a fuel tank used to run the cooling device apparently was wiped away by the tsunami that followed the 8.9-magnitude quake that struck 80 miles offshore Friday. Without proper cooling, the fuel rods may have overheated and started to melt. The government had denied any leak, but a nuclear emergency linked to the two Fukushima plants—the other is called Daini (Number 2)—and three others, remained in place, and authorities ordered the evacuation of thousands of people who live within about 12 miles of the Fukushima plants, located about 150 miles northeast of Tokyo.

“The big problem comes if they can’t cool the core down,” James M. Acton, a physicist at the Carnegie Endowment told the BBC. He said that would be “a significant potential problem for people and the environment.”

Attempts to cool the plants were complicated by power and water shortages in the three prefectures—Miyagi, Iwate and Aomori—that bore the brunt of quake and tsunami damage. The nuclear reactors must have water inside them to keep operating. Kyodo news agency said radiation levels rose as much as 1,000 times above the norm in some parts of the Fukushima plant. In a bid to bleed off some of the pressure, authorities released steam from the reactors, raising fears of radiation contamination—which could cause cancer. The government said, however, that the vapor release posed little risk to residents, although it did urge people living immediately outside the evacuation zone to remain in their homes as much as possible.

Mark Ford, an American consultant who lives in Tokyo and is a trained engineer, told The Daily Beast the degree to which the steam might be dangerous depends on the amount of radioactive elements in it. He said the earthquake did not appear to have inflicted any structural damage on the reactors and that authorities “have a lot of fail-safes and detailed protocols” to manage the situation. “Everything I’ve seen has been by the book,” he said.

But it appeared the government’s best efforts were not enough to prevent the Daiichi blast. Authorities were still trying to determine the extent of the damage—and the consequences—Saturday night.

The water shortage in the north poses another serious problem for the nation, depending on how long it lasts. It could take days or even weeks to repair broken water mains. Ford said that a lack of electricity and phone service meant that some of his friends in Fukushima had to queue at convenience stores to use pay phones, and buy water—some of which they heated to put in improvised hot-water bottles for warmth at night. “Sounds like it’s going to get cold up there tonight,” he said. “They’ll be cuddling.”

As residents across the country waited for more information about the nuclear-plant explosion, almost 9,000 troops joined rescue and recovery efforts, part of a 50,000-person force Kan said would ultimately be deployed. The troops will be needed as authorities race to find as many survivors as possible, in a Herculean effort hampered by chaotic mountains of smashed-up buildings, automobiles, boats and debris, as well as the brown sludge spread across large swaths of farmland. Authorities still expect the death toll to soar past 1,000, and feared hundreds of bodies lay beneath the mud and splintered buildings in and around Sendai, the city closest to the quake epicenter. “We must be prepared for the number to rise greatly," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said at a press briefing.

(Reuters) - Radiation was leaking from an unstable nuclear reactor north of Tokyo on Saturday, the Japanese government said, after an explosion blew the roof off the facility following a massive earthquake.

The development has led to fears of a disastrous meltdown. Here are comments from experts about what might have happened.

PROF PADDY REGAN, PROFESSOR OF NUCLEAR PHYSICS AT THE

"It looks as if the coolant pumps had initially stopped working. They shut down automatically when the reactor shuts down, but there is a backup system running off a diesel generator -- it looks as though that's the bit that failed.

"As a result there is no way of pumping heat out of the reactor, so it has to cool naturally. If the reactor gets too hot, in principle this means the fuel rods can melt - but it looks unlikely this has happened to any great extent in this case.

"To reduce the pressure, you would have to release some steam into the atmosphere from the system. In that steam, there will be small but measurable amounts of radioactive nitrogen - nitrogen 16 (produced when neutrons hit water). This remains radioactive for only about 5 seconds, after which it decays to natural oxygen.

"But if any of the fuel rods have been compromised, there would be evidence of a small amount of other radioisotopes in the atmosphere called fission fragments (radio-caesium and radio-iodine).

"The amount that you measure would tell you to what degree the fuel rods have been compromised. Scientists in Japan should be able to establish this very quickly using gamma ray spectroscopy as the isotopes have characteristic decay signatures. Current reports seem consistent with a small leak to relieve pressure."

"But we still need to establish the cause and exact location of the explosion, which is a separate issue. So far it looks like it's not the reactor core that's affected which would be good news.

"We must remember that there are 55 reactors in Japan and this was a huge earthquake, and as a test of the resilience and robustness of nuclear plants it seems they have withstood the effects very well."

TIMOTHY ABRAM, PROFESSOR OF NUCLEAR FUEL TECHNOLOGY AT

"By sampling the air around the station, you'd be able to tell how much radioactivity has been released. The thing they'll be looking for more than anything is whether there's any evidence of the fuel actually degrading," he told Reuters.

"If the fuel is substantially intact, then there'll be a much, much lower release of radioactivity and the explosion that's happened might be just due to a build-up of steam in the reactor circuit.

"The most probable (cause of the explosion) is the coolant, particularly if it's water, can overheat and turn to steam more rapidly than it was designed to cope with."

He said it was unlikely it would develop into anything more serious, but this would depend on the integrity of the fuel, which contains nearly all the radioactivity of the plant. He said he thought it would be "pretty unlikely" that the fuel itself had been significantly damaged.

He said if this did occur, some radioactive material might be released into the primary circuit, which in turn might be vented into the containment building to release the pressure.

"Even the worse case scenario from there is the pressure in the containment building itself builds up to dangerous levels and has to be released," he said.

"Consequently you are releasing pressure from in the containment building, some of which contains radioactivity, out into the environment. There are a lot of ifs in that chain of events."

"The explosion at No. 1 generating set of the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan, which took place today, will not be a repetition of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster," Interfax quoted the Ukrainian expert as saying.

He said that the Japanese nuclear power plants use reactors of a totally different design to Chernobyl's.

"Japan has modern-type reactors. All fission products should be isolated by the confinement (the reactor's protection shell). Only gas emission is possible."

Hlyhalo said that Japanese nuclear power plants are earthquake resistant.

"Apart from that, these reactors are designed to work at a high seismicity zone, although what has happened is beyond the impact the plants were designed to withstand. Therefore, the consequences should not be as serious as after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster."

"It does seem as if the back-up generators although they started initially to work, then failed," Grimes, an expert in radiation damage told BBC TV.

"So it means slowly the heat and the pressure built up in this reactor. One of the things that might just have happened is a large release of that pressure. If it's that then we're not in such bad circumstances.

"Despite the damage to the outer structure, as long as that steel inner vessel remains intact, then the vast majority of the radiation will be contained.

"At the moment it does seem that they are still contained and it's a release of significant steam pressure that's caused this explosion. The key will be the monitoring of those radiation levels."

Already 3 irradied people, the army is distribuing iode pills, confirmed that the roofs and walls of the central collapsed, there are 2 other centrals very close of the one where the explosion happenned so it could be even more catastrophic if there is a nuclear explosion...

Medias once again want to calm down the population, they say that the incident is level 4 on a scale of 1 to 7 (tchernobyl was 7)

I've been reading every article that come out about this. They are even monitoring the air in Oregon where I live and testing it for radiation. Obviously they know that it might blow over the the west coast too. This is terrible and just shows how much we need forms of energy that are healthy instead of destructive and toxic. Japan has a very large elderly population and it's going to be very difficult to evacuate them.

The fact that they are even testing it makes me think that they know some of that shit is going to blow over here. I'm not helping myself right now by watching that 2012 movie on Netflix, damn it. Are you in Portland too? I got calls at 5am on Friday morning from family asking if I was evacuating.

The situation is going worse and worse....

Yesterday it was only the reactor number 1 that was currently in nuclear fusion

Today the two others reactors of the centrals are currently under nuclear fusion and risk of turning into a nuclear explosion at any time

the japenese governement admitted that the colling failed in reactor #2 and reactor #3

So right now we got THREE REACTORS UNDER CONTROL, the cores are currently in nuclear fusion and risk of exploding at any time.... If it explode, then it's going to be THREE simultanous nuclear explosion, and there are other centrals in the region. Going to be worse than chernobyl, worse than nagasaki, worse than hiroshima and worse than everything we have known

It is fucking stupid how the authorities are trying to minimize facts to calm people.... They say that the incident is classed level 4 on a scale of 7.

During the three mile island incident in the USA, it was only one core that went out of control and nuclear fusion happenned. Incident was level 5 out of 7....
In japan, it is THREE CORES that are out of control and nuclear fusion is happenning. WHY THE FUCK is it level 4 out of 7 ???

This catastrophe is three time worse than the incident of Three Mile Island in the USA. It should be AT LEAST level 6 on a scale of 7 (7 = chernobyl)

Oh shit! I don't understand. Why in the little country like Japan build a nuclear power plants. Them so what a the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not enough?Many Russian media wrote that the danger from radioactivity is no threat, I mean if the radioactive pair of air will reach the Khabarovsk and Primorsky region. As usual are many writing, that will be fine but again it's all lies.

Yeah, all depends how strong wind is, and which way it blows. Can't imagine the chaos if it ends up over Tokyo. Bulgaria scrapped their nuclear power stations after Chernobyl, they were same design. It now nuclear free country, they written that into the constitution. Bulgarian economy not exactly great, almost all energy imported now, so if they can do it any nation can. Real reason for nuclear power stations though, is they can use by products for weapon industry. Yeah, there is some sick irony here, considering Hiroshima. Hope they can get fires under control, so it's just 'bad', rather than unthinkable.

Official sources said that the nuclear cloud will end up over pacific and nobody will suffer from it, which is bullshit of course. Medias keep telling us to not worry when a nuclear incident happen. Today canadian medias revealed that the japenese government always hide nuclear incidents and during the last years they didnt say anything about a couple of problems that heppenned in their power plants.

And when chernobyl blew up, all official sources said that the nuclear cloud stopped at the borders. It was a big lie, the nuclear cloud went all over europe and the governments hide it to prevent panic.

Official sources says that the fires are under control and so far everything they tryed have failed. The pressure and the temperature is rising, the nuclear core are still on fusion.

yeah, alot of people i know are freaking out, especially everyone from Washington state down to NorCA. but also wouldnt Russia and southeast asia get affected by this avoidable disaster. but not too many people are deathly worried in the Valley which is right below your pdx area.
