A massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake has struck off Japan's northeastern coast, triggering a four meter tsunami that washed away cars along parts of the coastline.

Video from national broadcaster NHK showed dozens of cars, large ferries and some buildings being swept out to sea in the port city of Kamaishi in the province of Iwate.

The Japanese Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warming for the entire Pacific coast of Japan following the quake that struck about 125 kilometers off the eastern coast, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Residents in the coastal areas have been urged to immediately evacuate to higher ground.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in the U.S. state of Hawaii said a tsunami warning was also in effect for Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. It said a tsunami watch was issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and Hawaii.

Friday's massive quake was felt in Tokyo, where it shook buildings and caused several fires. The Tokyo metro system says all train and subway traffic in the city has been stopped.

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan has convened an emergency meeting of the Cabinet to assess the situation.

Also, tsunami warning for Alaska and the US West Coast, and basically anybody in the pacific ocean. Hawaii is sounding tsunami sirens as we speak. It's not for sure yet, but they say if we do know if it will hit here, people should be ready to evac.

This leads me to a question, sure government aid in disasters is not perfect, but they still send help.
How would an anarchist society handle natural disasters?

Same as today, I think. People would be more lets say united. They will care more about others, so helping someone won't be a problem. But, you can't really do something when natural disaster happen, right ? I mean, the only thing you can do is to help the survivors, rebuild destroyed buildings, and offer people home while they don't find alternative one.

They said it's for sure going to hit the west coast, by about 745am Pacific time, but it's only going to be 3 ft high when it hits shore. Expected to be about 6 feet up north.

urbanization is the problem- natural disasters occur on the level they do because of concrete and pollution and so many other things humans have done.

considering adopting more from anarcho-primitivism.....it's starting to make more sense now that i've been reading more on environmentalism.

while i dont agree with anarcho-primitivism, i do, do everything in my power to help the environment. Recycle very strictly, bottles, cans, plastic, and anything that doesnt belong in a trash dump. Conserve water, when washing dishes, showering, etc. And of course stop using things that are known to cause harm to the environment. Lets face it with 6 billion people on earth, we are slowly fucking up our planet.

It's bullshit, the official source always say everything is safe when there's a nuclear problem... In france big problems happen frequently and the government keeps saying nothing is happenning... when tchernobyl blew up all governments were saying that the nuclear cloud didnt pass the border but it did...

Right now, the medias are saying that at least 2 nuclear power plant are in danger, the pressure keeps rising inside, there are fire, and one of the nuclear power plant had to release nuclear radioactive vapor in the air to lower the pressure.... The situation is really scary.

    short comment on that:
there was a picture in todays local newspaper over here, the tsunami-wave crushing the coast, hitting a small amount of houses about 50 metres away from the original coast-line...
the interesting detail was: immediately behind the original coast-lining stood a group/row of trees, they resisted the deadly power of the wave, while the houses were just washed away like leaves...

    just some impressions... ;)

Urban civilisation does not effect tectonic plates. Pollution is obviously a problem in other ways but earthquakes and their aftershocks are no more from the actions of humans than they are an 'act of god'.

However, there is no doubt that our current societies has validated the use of nuclear power. Once again, the consequence of this is rearing its ugly head. I just hope it doesn't become 'the next Chernobyl' or whatever.

    Scary, horrible shit.

Grizzly Bears, I saw that today! I posted that image to my facebook and said that if I'm friends with anyone who thinks that the Japan somehow deserves this devastation because of Pearl Harbor that they can go ahead and delete me as a friend. Sick.

My dad tried to say that to me yesterday. That the tsunami and earthquakes were all a part of "gods plan" and that it was probably karma for Pearl Harbor. I said I'd hate to see the tsunami coming to us for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I would've like to of said more but I'm not trying to become homeless.
