Post your cheap food. I'm hungry and I don't have a lot of food to eat right now.
Right now I'm eating a banana with peanut butter wrapped in a tortilla. Yes!

Dude...I eat that all the time. Ramen has been a staple of my white trash existence since i was a kid. If you're vegetarian, the "oriental" flavor has all veg ingredients.
    Spaghetti is always easily aquireable.

Smuggling gallon-sized ziplock bags (in a purse, backpack etc) into buffets is a good way to score food. Make your plate, take it to your table making sure nody is looking, bag it and get another plate.

Check the discount/out-of-date section in supermarkets. You'd be surprised at some of the things you can get for a dollar or less (free if it magically finds it's way into your jacket).

One thing that's worked for me in the past when i was broke is invite myself to my mom's house for dinner. I've also shopped for groceries there as well.

if you're not above eating garbage, there's always dumpster diving. There's also learning the schedules of your local Food Not Bombs chapters.

I have veg ramen and spaghetti. Food Not Bombs is 7 days a week in Portland, mom lives 14 hours away. I wont starve to death. My mind is just on food right now.

I've gotten really good at making dirt-cheap falafel lately. In a food processor, or with a handheld blender, anything used to mix food, grind up 1 can's worth of chick peas, 3 slices of bread (whole-wheat works great), 1 onion, 2 cloves of garlic, 1 teaspoon of cumin, 1 teaspoon of coriander and 1/2 teaspoon of tumeric. If you're using a handheld blender, or small food processor, it's easier to grind everything up separately, then mix it by hand. Form it into 1-1 1/2" patties and bake in a baking pan with a bit of oil for 35-40 minutes, flipping them at about the 20-minute mark. It makes between 12-16 patties, depending on how big you make 'em.

Homemade hummus is cheap too, and delicious. I've just perfected my recipe, I just need to get around to writing it down...

I've been working in a grocery store for a couple years now, so I know exactly where all the security cameras are, and more importantly, aren't. The dairy/deli cooler/freezer area are completely unmonitored. I don't think I've actually paid for mock-meats, frozen fruit or canned vegetables in over a year. The managers treat their employees like shit, I figure they owe us!

I eat a lot of pb&j's. A little pricey if you're looking for an immediate snack, but pretty decent in the long run. A little peanut butter and jelly goes a long way...

I almost feel about top ramen the same way I feel about McDonalds. Idk why. Too corporate I guess? Most times, I'd rather starve then buy a package of ramen for 25c. This is just an assumption though, because I'd love to be able to survive of this stuff. Made into miso tofu soup its the fucking best. Am I over reacting on top ramen? because, like coca-cola, and other well known brands, there has to be something up with it.

eh, ramen most likely is made in some giant factories with underpaid non-union workers, utilize millions of gallons of water and tons of animal products that also utilize tons of water and food. your basic corporation...maybe not as bad as coke on a global scale, but coke isn't as comparitevly bad as a company in terms of ecological costs; it's bad in terms of its political representation (westernization and all that).

Wait what? Coke is horrible for the environment, it depletes the fresh water sources of many third world regions, and pollutes the remaining water with heavy metals including cadmium that are used in its processing.

I went to the produce market today after getting some money and bought some spinach, carrots and apples. I'm pretty stoked on that.

@ mar : sorry i should have worded that better. i meant that all major food production companies are terrible for the environment. i was just saying coke and ramen are on the same level, but coke just has more political clout than ramen.

Avocado sandwiches, maaaan. That's my shit. Avacado slices and italian dressing are the backbone but then add whatever other veggies ya got laying around. Shit's filling. Another good idea is make up batches of soup ifya got time to kill and produce spoiling. Then ya can freeze it or put it in the fridge and eat it all week with that dumpestered bakery. \m/

Oh, I just thought of another thing I love! The avocado sandwich post reminded me. I make vegan breakfast burritos by making some hashbrowns (Trader Joe's has cheap frozen ones), avocado slices and salsa in a tortilla. If you're really fancy you could put in cooked onions and spinach.

No, nothing is as cheap as oriental flavored top ramen. There are other cheap foods out there but nothing that's that cheap. Most food is corporate though unless you are buying from a farmer's market. There are only a few food companies I know of that I can say are being run by rad people and one is Bob's Red Mill which is run out of Milwaukee Oregon. Dave's Killer Bread is another very good company which is across the street from Bob's Red Mill. I buy from them when I have enough money. Their products are amazing.

I kinda feel the same way about Presidents Choice and No Name. They're both "generic" brands in Canada, owned by Loblaws (Loblaws owns PC, and PC owns No Name), a huge grocery retailer company. Their owner, Galon Weston is one of the richest men in Canada, who also owns Westons Bakery. It bills itself as a "generic" brand, and their products are pretty cheap, compared to the bigger Name Brands (Coke, Frito Lay, Christie...), but they treat all their workers like shit (me being one of them... at least for the next 2 weeks), ie, not employing full-time workers, while giving no benefits to part-time workers and low wages (the store I work at, 4 people out of about 50 make above minimum wage). A lot of the time, I don't want to buy their products at all, but for certain food items, it's a choice between that, and an even bigger, eviler corporation.
