I use myspace basically to just post pics of my kid for my family on the east coast to see. I actually haven't used it in months. I wouldn't post songs or other art on there because I've heard they own it (and can use it at will) once it's posted on their site. Don't know if it's true or not, but not worth the risk.

My previous band did have one, I don't know how useful it was. Don't think I'd bother in future. However, I don't look down on bands for using it. I think the idea of having an anti-myspace myspace page is quite cool.

I've heard this as well, though I'm also unsure about how true this is.

I think that's an interesting point - at what point is it too far? If you are trying to organise a counter-culture then using such a corporate mechanism has got to be hypocritical/counter-productive.

I'll admit I have a facebook. It is quite a good way for me to keep in touch with people now that I'm spending so much time in hospital and I have heard about some demonstrations that I would have otherwise missed because of it. I can't stand the advertising on it, mind.

myspace has turned to shit. although Lastfm is flawed in that if multiple bands have the same name only the band who go in first has a say what features.

Yeah I am not sure how true it is, it is something that has been suggested a long time but I assume it to be correct at some point. Also think there is a lot of carelessness about on social networking sites, it's a fact that cops, spooks and Nazi's are using myspace and fuckbook as a means of gathering data, but I guess by the same token anti-nazis could be using simmilar approaches. I just think some people say way too much more than they need to and may then be crying when they are locked up for it just a thought?

Well forgive me for using the Dead Kennedy's and 'Where do you draw the line'. Everyone has his/her limits and taking some kind of stand is better than no stand at all. I totally can see how facebook in particular has proved a great networking tool for political protest, seems to be the case in Egypt and was certainly true of last year's student protests in London. At the same time as I said before people seem to give all their details willlingly to the thought police. Sure the thought police can find out about you anyway but facebook and myspace is doing it in a way that just makes the job easier for them. Tough one because there are arguments for the potential for mobilisation through sites like faceache but I am still up for rejecting and boycotting them, but not social networking altogether (obviously) :D

Somewhat relevant was this thread started up by a friend of mine on another forum. I thought I'd post it here for people to look at, use, abuse and/or ignore. Also, in relation to the 'atmospheric crust' requests, his band is worth a listen, pretty horrible (in a good way) misanthropic Dystopia-esque metal. May not like it, but it can't hurt to try.

Re: face book / my space

storage of everyone’s info is potentially very dangerous. it is difficult to avoid, i have a gmail account for example. but these two company’s take it way two far.

i am a novice with computers but have recently wiped windows and swapped to debian (lynux). and am getting into the idea of free software. some of the recording of personal dater and spying that apple have proposed to do is ..... er well I will find links at another time and post them.

also check out the development of the freedom box (data scrambler)

hay I’ve had a drink but will try to get more info up on this soon

but face book and myspace ???

i find it quite sad that i can't look up a gig without these bastards

lets do something    :lmao: :lmao: different

As much as I hate it, it is useful for organizing shows/political events.

Hey, there's got to be enough tech-savvy anarchists out there to set up an anarchist social networking site.
Maybe call it something like OurSpace

i think that there are numerous sites that can be used instead of face book and myspace but if you must use these sights why not just tell people when they look up your band or event to get the details from.... and give a link to another site...... this way people will start to move away from these corporate businesses as they have to go elsewhere anyway to get the details....

    irc is another way

Yeah but eventually FB/MS would get pissed and disable outside linking.

The only reason I have myspace still (I may have said this before) is so my family (none of whom are anarchists) can see pics of my kid.
