Assholes. They'd need more cops than that to roll up on one of my family's parties. Some of those pigs would need stretchers. Fuck the police.

Yes, this one really hit hard - and after some googeling about the 2004 TJ Hickey "incident" I hope especially the Hickey family will get the necessary protection from now on - the whole story reminds me very much on the early sa-terror in nutzi germoney in the 30's - weirdo fascist cops picking on individuals to make them "leave"... at all cost for the victims. All Cops Are Bastards!

The aftermath of the TJ Hickey tragedy is one of the least talked about political events over here imho.
There was a whole lotta rioting (a very infrequent event here is Aus) after what happened to TJ, but because its wasn't the :ecouteurs: but pissed off locals it kinda gets forgotten.
Facta Non Verba kinda touch on the issues around this incident, and gentrification in Redfern moar generally here

There is also the Palm Island case, whereby this fucking pig, Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley, beat an Indigenous man, Mulrunji Doomadgee, to death in custody. The initial coroners report (from memory) found Doomadgee had died from a fall, despite "massive internal injuries, including a ruptured spleen, four broken ribs and a liver that had been 'almost cleaved in two' from a huge compressive force." Hurley did eventually face manslaughter charges, believed to be the first police officer to face charges for an Aboriginal death in custody, of which he was acquitted.

    Also:
"After the death of Mulrunji, Hurley voluntarily offered himself up for suspension from the police service with full pay. It lasted several years. That’s quite a taxpayer-funded holiday.

In May this year, The Australian newspaper revealed that Hurley had received a $100,000 payout from the Queensland government for losses he says he incurred from the fire which destroyed the police barracks**. That’s quite a payout – the average household contents for an Australian home is worth $70,000.

Hurley has since received a promotion, and he’s had his legal bills largely covered by the Queensland Police Union. In addition to that, he is yet to face any disciplinary action over the death of Mulrunji, nor the many breaches of police regulations prior to and after the death. Lex Wotton*, by contrast, has already served three months in jail and is facing a further 13 years."

*Lex Wotton was charged, and convicted, with 'rioting with destruction', following the ensuing riots to the death in custody, "in which a police station, adjoining courthouse, **a police residence and a vehicle were destroyed by fire."
