    Both :)

Two of my favourite subgenres, along with Thrashcore, Powerviolence, D-Beat, and Black Metal (though I don't listen to it as much as I do any of the extreme punk)

Hey dirtyrottenthrashpunk, you seem like someone who knows a lot about thrashcore/crossover type bands. Any recommendations? I know about municipal waste, the accused, cryptic slaughter, not us/natas. What albums should I check out?

@ sludgefuck....siege started grindcore as they were the band who first used blastbeats. therefore death metal was influenced by grind.

Grindcore = crust punk/thrashcore (or some other kind of extreme punk) + death metal. Blast beats were already used in Thrashcore, by bands like DRI, Siege (no Death metal = no Grindcore), Cryptic Slaughter, thats where Grind got them from. DRI use blast beats in the song "No Sense" in 1983, are you gonna call them Grindcore?

Oh man I actually don't know too many bands like that (and my favourites are Cryptic Slaughter and Municipal Waste anyways), as I'm not into a lot of Crossover (though, yeah, I love the thrashcore/fastcore side of that equation), but Wehrmacht's "Shark Attack" and "Beirmacht" are considered classics (and both Cryptic Slaughter approved). And apparently these newer bands Bandanos and Holier Than Thou play stuff like that, though I haven't listened to either of them yet. Check out this blog "Classic Hardcore Violence", it's got a bunch of stuff like that, as well as plenty of Powerviolence, Crust, and a bunch of other stuff from within the realms of Punk.

meh...well we can go around in circles with this shit. no, DRI (save their first EP) sucks, and they are not grindcore, they are thrash. serisouly listen to siege again and tell me that it's not grindcore or at least tell me they didn't pave the way for it in 1983. Death (the metal band) was the first death metal, and they also started in 1983...so i guess it's all just up to debate at that point who started what. honeslty, i don't give a fuck i was just being a showoff.

Oh yeah Siege definitely paved the way for it (as well as Powerviolence I'd say), as did a number of bands in the thrashcore and crust punk scenes, but it was when that stuff was combined with early Death metal that Grindcore started. And I'll agree that DRI's crossover thrash/metal stuff isn't too great, but I love the early thrashcore stuff. Dirty Rotten EP, VIolent Pacifation, and Dealing With It are all pretty damn good IMO. Also, I don't need to go listening to Siege to check up on how they sound, I listened to them earlier today already anyways, as well as some Grindcore (and I have Assuck playing right now) :p

yeah i'll buy into early DRI, but that's where i draw the line. it's a personal experience thing...i just hate DRI as people, but deffo their early stuff is good. now mix siege...which sounds pretty powerviolenceish, with this and then you have modern grind

I'd say throw Doom in the mix as well. Siege + Doom + Death = early Grind (especially Napalm Death's Scum, though there's also slight noise, industrial, and post-punk influence at times) in a nutshell.

dude death metal =/= blast beats. Just because they use blast beats it does not define it's genre.

powerviolence is typically a cross between hardcore punk, fastcore and thrashcore, its FAST and ANGRY!! and thats why it kicks ass! Also i noticed that many powerviolence bands tend to us similar tempos, they play fast fast fast slow slow fast fast! While powerviolence was a small genre when it started, now its beginning to grow with many modern day bands with powerviolence inspirations.

It's basically thrashcore/fastcore, but as brutal as Grindcore, and without the major death metal influence Grindcore has...it overlaps with thrashcore, grind, and crust a fair amount. best Powerviolence bands IMO are Infest, Dropdead, and Capitalist Casualties.
