Id say see a nutritionist or something, or do some research.
The removal of meat from your diet may make you ill at first,
maybe try weening off of it slowly over time

you will get ill if you remove meat from your diet, only if you do it too soon.
I suggest you do it slowly so your body gets used to it.

Yeah, dont eat meat over week, and then after mounth - start eating only fish - and then when you get used to it ( making veg-food and stuff) stop eating meat. It wasnt hard for me, just dont do it fast, go slowly. search some recepies on the internet or libary. My mum makes me meals and she is also a doctor, so I dont have to worry about that, but if you are adult and you dont know anything about 'eating' , yeah - necessarily do some reasearch !
And then, one day - you will be able to become vegan

i doubt you can get sick from "severage" of meat, it can only be benefit for your health. Proteins are proteins just replace your meat habbits with other good high in proteins.... Or as another said, consult a nutritionist.

I lost 7 kilos from turning vegetarian cold turkey and i was (still am) a skinny bastard. I didnt even eat that much meat to begin with so it was pretty easy for me to stop.

The main thing to remember is to be careful with your diet... I had a girlfriend a while back who went straight cold turkey Vegan. She didn't take care of herself, not enough protiens, vitamins, etc. and she got extremely sick. Vegetarianism (and veganism) are awesome practices that can introduce you to some incredible food, but remember to take care of yourself.

i think ti should go without saying (some have said it here) that whatever your diet, you need to be carefull.
i went straight to vegetarian at 16 in 1982. there wasnt a great deal of alternatives back then, so i probabaly didnt eat the best i could, but i was fine. i went vegan a year later and again ,there werent many "substitutes" so i would just eat veg, bread etc and drink the disgusting soya milk, as it was at the time!

be careful if you see a nutritionist, because if they are totally biased, and crap at their job, they will advice you that you have to have meat in your diet which is fucked up.
    good luck :)

consult a nutritionist. that's what i did when i went vegan
but now i'm underweight and vegan.
i lost ten pounds when i became vegetarian about a year ago, and i was a teenaged boy who was at a perfectly healthy weight so thats why i consulted a nutritionist before i made the full switch to veganism. haven't really grown or gained any weight since. i don't feel like i'm dying, but who knows q:

Just eat a variety of foods, and make sure to get enough protein. There's all types of decent meat substitutes like burgers and sausage these days. Vitamin b-12 can be an issue, as it most commonly comes from animal-based sources. Maybe invest in some vitamins.

I'm a bigger guy and I wen't vegetarian. I didn't get sick, just had nonstop gas for a few weeks :/ I don't know what to say about going cold turkey, I weaned myself--first a week of no red meat, then after that no meat at all.

Getting sick from being a vegetarian is nonsense, go slap whoever told you that. We are not programmed to eat meat, yes we can digest it and shit, but its not as important to your life as oxygen and water is. Vegan is different (depending on how old you are, and what you eat.) But being vegetarian is more normal than eating meat. I was practically vegan growing up and i turned out fine... i think.

I was overweight, when i became vegetarian i lost about 10-15 pounds in water weight in the first 2 weeks. (i never caved to eating meat and i didnt eat garbage the whole time either). But you can be vegetarian and be fat, im not the skinniest guy and ive been vegetarian for 5 years at least, and practically had a natural diet growing up.

Seriously, this whole scare about not eating meat making you sick is just stupid socio- bullshit to scare you into eating it. Think about it, do you think not eating dead animals is gunna make you sick? I mean COME ON.

Turning vegetarian should make little difference to your weight as long as you continue to eat sensibly. Dairy allows plenty of opportunity for fat and protein - just don't go crazy on the cheese and you shouldn't get too big.

My weight went down a little when I turned vegan and then stablised. I also beame the fittest I have been. I do a lot of running and I'd say that since I was veganism at least 30 seconds came off each mile, or there abouts. This might be coincidental but I doubt it. Always be careful with diet changes though, obviously.

I litterally went cold turkey Vegetarian in the middle of a school day 5 years ago. I didn't get sick at ALL. I did lose weight and a lot of muscle, but I'm still pretty muscular. It was definantly one of the best decisions I've ever made.
    (I actually went vegetarian for an ex-girlfriend... :@ )

Like so many of you state, converting to vegetarianism is definitely not an incentive for a potential protein deficiency. In fact, I don't think I've heard of anyone, without some wierd scumbag pre-existing medical issues, who'd ever experienced something close to that sort of deficiency (and I know a lot of vegetarians/vegans!) - and since you want to be a vegetarian and not, say, a vegan, you'll have no problems with your b12 vitamin balance as well. I don't know where you live, but since I live in Scandinavia, where the sun is kind of obscure *insert smile*, the matter of d-vitamin comes at hand.
I dropped a few pounds when I turned vegetarian, and later on, when I turned vegan, I dropped a few more. After that, my body sort of stabilized and I gained weight. Now, I can easily adjust my weight - no problemo.

My advice is to seek the ideal dietary spectrum which is eating a great variety of green vegetables, fruits, legumes (chickpeas, beans (all sorts), lentles), not too much soy/"meat-replacements", keep the food fresh, keep some of it raw, incoporate nuts and seeds, even sprouts are a substantial vitamin/protein bomb!

All the best (for you and the animals :D
