Ah ok a bit of misinformation on my part i guess. Most of the stuff I've seen I swear he was playing a right handed strat but flipped to the left hand. You can play guitar ambidextrously? I must say that's impressive!

na...His guitar was specially re-stringed for him...so he didn't play in backwards...it just looked backwards....[/quote]

That, also, might explain it. I never looked to deeply into it i suppose.

The jazz musician Django Reinhardt was great in that way. He used to be right handed, but burned two fingers badly, making them paralyzed so that he was told he wouldn't be able to play anymore. Instead, he learned to play all of his solo's with only 2 fingers, and also, he learned to switch from playing right handed to left handed on some songs. Pretty impressive!
At that time he was a professional musician already, but he became a legend as one of the greatest guitarplayers in world history even after the injury.

haha I wish I was ambidextrous on guitar, I'm naturally a right handed person, (and I've always maintained this theory of mine) your smarter hand belongs on the fretboard, thus my right hand is on the fret board making me a 'left handed' player...when I was a kid before I could actually play I would visit my favorite older cousin who was a classical and bossa nova guitarist he was really a sweetheart with me and would let me pick up his guitars and attempt to play them...being naturally right handed I would reach out to pick up the guitar with my right hand by the neck and somehow learned my very first things teaching myself to pick out notes on an upside-down right-stringed Spanish acoustic. I would sit for hours like that, until one day he took a big box country acoustic he had and strung it left handed for me and I was off...haha. So I can play a left strung instrument or a right strung instrument...both left handed....are you confused yet? If you play right handed just imagine the strings upside down with the High E on top and the Low E on the bottom and everything you play has to be the reverse of the normal way. My Fender Strat is a right handed guitar strung for a lefty same as Jimi preferred.

Watching Django play and trying to emulate his chord progressions and scaling gives me an anyeurism o_O

Sounds quite interesting! I would like to see that someday actually :) I had a teacher as a kid, but i remember too being confused why i should use my weak hand on the fretboard.
But so many years of playing guitar has given me one thing - because of the training of my left hand, my difference between right and left hand isn't so big, i can use both for many things, and often, i use the left hand without thinking about it, even if i am right handed.

yeah, i've given up on learning Django Reinhardt.
Generally, i'm sticking to punk music these days, as i would rather practice for band playing. I had a period trying to learn some Paco De Lucia too, but gave up on that one too (though i really liked the technique with "drumming" with your thump while playing)

    1) David Bowie (For his song composition, creativity, and stage presence)

    2) Mike Scott (Bassist from Econochrist)

    3) Matt Freeman (I hate Rancid with a passion, but I think he's better than Les and Flea)

    4) Jerry Lee Lewis  (For obvious reasons)

    5) Ian Curtis (For his lyrics)

Im suprised no one mentioned Tony Iommi (if thats how you spell it) from Black Sabbath, I rediscovered there greatness a couple months ago and i wouldnt want to know what music would sound like without him. Kerry King and the other guy (sorry dude forgot your name) from Slayer for making some of the heaviest riffs in history (South of Heaven, Expendable Youth). In the blues and jazz category theres too many to pick just five ( Muddy Waters, BB King, John Lee Hooker, Mississippi John Hurt, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Coltrane etc...) Whoever the guitarist for Napalm Death was during the recording of Scum. And i guess Keiji Haino for his absolute noise assault that i would never have known had anything to do with a guitar if it wasnt for youtube.

I eould second Tommy Iommi as one of my favorites. The guy that played guitar on a good part of Scum was Bill Steer (better known as the founder of Carcass) whom I mentioned earlier as my personal favorite.

As far as blues musicians go Howlin' Wolf is my favorite. But as far as guitar playing style goes I really like Elmore Jasmes...

im sure i will take a beating for this, but what the hey, this band called theLine, total 'bro punk' corporately sponsered by Volcom, are probably musicanwise the best i've heard play that type of music, especially their bass player. it puts all other new school punk to shame imo.
