Fidel Castro has said that he is ultimately responsible for the persecution suffered by homosexuals in Cuba after the revolution of 1959.

The former president told the Mexican newspaper La Jornada that there were moments of great injustice against the gay community.

"If someone is responsible, it's me," he said.

In the 1960s and 70s, many homosexuals in Cuba were fired, imprisoned or sent to "re-education camps".

Mr Castro said homosexuals had traditionally been discriminated in Cuba, just as black people and women.

But, nevertheless, he admits he didn't pay enough attention to what was going on against the gay community.

"At the time we were being sabotaged systematically, there were armed attacks against us, we had too many problems," said the 84-year-old Communist leader.

"Keeping one step ahead of the CIA, which was paying so many traitors, was not easy."

In 1979, homosexuality was decriminalised and, more recently, there have been efforts to legalise same-sex unions.
    'At death's door'

In the interview with La Jornada, Mr Castro also spoke of the economic embargo against the island, which was imposed by the United States in 1961. He said it was just as damaging today as it was then.

"The biggest problem was always medicine and food, which is true even today," he said.

Mr Castro's comments came in the second instalment of a lengthy interview with the journalist Carmen Lira.

On Monday's instalment, he said he had been "at death's door" during the long illness which forced him to step down as Cuba's leader.

Mr Castro fell ill in 2006 and handed power to his brother Raul in 2008.

He underwent several operations for an intestinal illness.

"I asked myself several times if (the doctors) would let me live under these conditions or whether they would allow me to die," he told La Jornada.

Mr Castro led Cuba for almost 50 years after toppling the government of Fulgencio Batista in a revolution.

The Communists remain in power and Fidel Castro remains head of the Communist Party, although his brother Raul is president of the country.

What a fucking idiot, he's like 50 years late and he finally admit it. stupid asshole, thats what happen when you build a communist dictatorship. Fuck him and his fascist revolution.

For info, homosexuals and transexuals were illegal after the cuban revolution and they were persecuted by the dictatorship built by fidel castro and che guevara.

He just want to clean up his hands before dying because he's an old fart who's about to die so he want to clean his counciousness.

That's not all he needs to apologize for, he needs to apologize for betraying the revolution...and you can't lump in Ernesto Guevara with Fidel because Che kept fighting around the world while Castro became the Fat Cat and he broke with Fidel several times....leading many to believe that Castro betrayed him to Bolivian authorities through intermediaries.

this shouldn't be surprising, castro is one of the most ruthless dictators of all time, why wouldn't he discriminate against minorities? He won't let citiziens of his country leave or come as go as they please. He is evil, and it's shocking the bastard is still alive. He bastardizes the term communism.

Che Guevara was the philosopher of the cuban revolution, castro was just a guerillos he needed a philosopher for his ideas and Che was his man. Che Guevara was always a marxist-leninist, so even if it would be him who took the power it would have been as worse. Che Guevara is also PERSONNALLY responsible for the biggest mass executions after the revolution, including anarchists.

He kept fighting around the world instead of caring about his own country that was such a mess after the revolution - well look what happenned. He should have finished what he started before going into guerilla war with other countries.

    1. Che was below Fidel and Raul in the guerrilla army, and while he was MORE of a philosopher than Fidel, it is not fair to say that Fidel truly bought most of his ideas
    2. Che was trigger happy, but he wasn't a dictator like Fidel
    3. Che was from Argentina. He went to Bolivia because of disagreements with Fidel, feeling like an outsider in Cuba, and the desire to spread the revolution towards Argentina.

Fidel was a real bastard, but the fact that he was such a thorn in the side of the US for half a century is worth something in my book.

Funny aside: I was Fidel for halloween. My brother was JFK. (He lives on the east coast, and we didnt discuss it.

Yes he did, Che was here to give ideas to fidel castro, study the cuban revolution and you will see. Castro understood nothing of politics, he needed someone like Che Guevara to complete his army.

It is ridiculous to pretend that che guevara is against dictatorship knowing he was a marxist-leninist.

Prove me wrong and quote me one single example where Che Guevara pretended to be against dictatorship or critized fidel castro for becomming a dictator.

Oh so now we are going to support everyone who are against USA ?

Stalin and the URSS was a big opponent for a whole century, maybe it's also worth something in your book ? What about the FARC ? Why not support the jihad against USA while we're at it ?

I will have to agree with ungovernable here.

I was (for an unfortunately long time) a Leninist and very much into Che. I still admire the dedication he had for his cause, but i won't pretend that he was going to bring about some "great" "socialism", even if he truly believed in what he fought for and truly believed that he could liberate Latin America from North American/European domination.

I am vehemently an anarcho-syndicalist and opposed to Marxism, but I still have a great admiration for the life of Guevara and what he tried to accomplish in Latin America and Africa. You are right Ungovernable in the fact that most of the criticism of Fidel and the breaks all seem to be the speculation of people that were close to him and not directly quotable to Che, although his actions, and quotes from Fidel himself, as to the nature of Guevara, tend to support these speculations. He was much more interested in the politics of liberation than the politics of State control which is a bit of a cop out. Still as an anarchist I would see Ernesto as much more of an ally than as an adversary....as for massacre of anarchists after the revolution in Cuba I have found no evidence of such things but I can always ask my Cuban anarchist contacts for any better clues....

Supposedly, Camilo Cienfuegos was an anarchist, and his parents certainly were. He was a great friend of Che's, and after the revolution in Cuba he was part of the government (not such an anarchist action, i know). But i don't believe that there was such a massacre of anarchists as has been claimed. What could have happened to them (if there were that many to begin with) is anyone's guess, really. Not saying it didn't happen, just saying that i haven't seen any evidence for it.

Guevara's hands were not at all bloodless, but that's what you get with a communist revolution
Castro, I believe, betrayed his own ideals and those of the revolution by remaining in power

i still laugh at the kids who buy Che t-shirts from the mall for $25... now that's a real fucking joke

I don't see anything that could make Che Guevara an ally for anarchiste, especially since he slaughtered many innocent including anarchists (i have french text proving it)

Yes, because of him cuba got rid of Batista but at what cost ? He didn't even care about making a better society after he kicked out batista.... If we're to support him only because he got rid of batista and challenged the USA (again, at what cost ? the nuke missile crisis wasn't smart and placed his small little country in the middle of a conflict between super-powers, he was just a peon used by URSS), then why not support lenin because he got rid of the tsar or Mao because he got rid of the nationalists ?

    Here's a drawing i made:

I've seen that drawing Ungovernable, so I already knew ahead of time that you don't care for him...however like you, I have studied the Cuban Revolution intensely because it had very close ties to Mexico and it's revolutionaries. Nobody ever claimed his hands were bloodless, what I haven't found is any betrayal to revolutionary principles done by Ernesto G., including the massacre of Cuban Anarquistas, that is to say I'm not accusing you of lying, but having read very many books on the subject both pro and con, I have never found any evidence. Could you maybe point me in the direction of the French text you are citing, I'd be very interested to learn more about what you are saying.

i really don't see where the links between marxist-leninist cuban revolution and the anarchist spanish revolution are... and the cuban revolution have absolutly no similarities with the anarchist revolution and the zapatist struggle

che guevara and fidel castro both betrayed their ideas, because they promised to not make cuba another communist state and look how it ended up.... anyway, since both of them were marxist-leninist i'm not even sure if we can call that "betraying their ideas", they just lied to their people...

i'll try to translate you my sources for the assassination of anarchists but i'm pretty sure you can easily find it on the internet... even a couple of month ago the singer of an anarcho-punk band was sent to jail in cuba because of his ideas... not surprising if we consider that all alternative medias and opinion are censored in cuba..

This from my friends at Movimiento Libertario Cubano:

Una pregunta, es verdad que Ernesto Guevara tuvo que ver con una massacre de anarquistas Cubanos despues de la toma de estado? Nunca he podido encontrar evidencias que lo comprueben. Cualquier informacion seria bienvenida....gracias camarada.

¡Salud, Mar!
    G

One question, it is true that Ernesto Guevara was related to a massacre of Cuban anarchists after the capture of state? I never could find evidence to prove it. Any information would be welcome .... thanks comrade.

Tu your health, Mar! Nor will you ever find any evidence, these exaggerations do little to help in our struggle. There never was such a "slaughter", what is true is the imprisonment of many compañeros (anarchists) and the death penalty by firing squad, here it true signed by Che, remember that he felt great sympathy for Maoism and his aversion against the anarchists is logical. A big libertarian hug
    G

So I guess you were correct in a way Ungov., no massacre, but several murdered anarchists in prison.
