    The justification for the charges that Green Day aren't, and never were punk are as follows;

    They sold a lot of records.
    They sing about romance.
    They aren't 'loud enough' or their music sounds 'too good.'
    They eventually signed to a major label.

    If you actually believe these are legitimate criteria, you have no idea what you're talking about.

    I don't like them (punk or not who cares, makes no difference to me) because, they sing about stupid things, they sound like a lot of other bands, they are putting on a broadway show, they are on a major label, they revell in their image of brattiness, they wear make-up, they have the rock star mentality, They made their music radio friendly. they have millions of dollars but what do they do with it? but the main reason is their lyrics have no substance to me.

    Signing to a major label is very legitimate reason to hate a band and for them to not be considered 'punk'.

    But i digress, how about you tell why u think green day ARE punk?

    I don't care. You're perfectly allowed to feel however you want. However, when people proclaim a band isn't punk simply because they dislike them then there is a big problem.

    I'm not really interested in disputing that, again, my issue is with this totally bogus charge by badly informed people who have the hubris to think they own punk rock.

    It could be a reson to hate a band, although I think it's a silly one, but it in no way necessitates a band cease being punk, by itself. Not in the least.

    I don't. I think they were punk. Up through Warning, I'd say. When American Idiot came out it was a totally different beast, the band had fundamentally transformed, for the worse, incidentally.

    I'm a fan of Green Day (musically) but up until this thread was posted I thought the phrase "Green Day" was censored or frowned upon in these forums

    Must admit that i got into the whole punk thing by listening to bands like Green Day and Offspring.... Although now those albums i got from them are now dust collectors....

    Green Day made 2 ''underground'' records on Lookout Records called 1,039 smoothed out slappy hours and Kerplunk. After that came Dookie. The record where they became mainstream with and from my opinion they went shit after that.

    Yes i agree with Arjay691 that since record one they have been making high school break up singalong songs. But if that is crappy is just a matter of taste. At leats they had their own sound. They were not the 10000 discharce rip off band. Even though they were pretty lame back than allready. I can't name one band that sounded the same. The fact is that Lookout Records is pretty underground, the recrds were sold for descent prices and the sound quality of those 2 records aren't ''Warner Bros'' standard, so in my opinion they weren't all that bad back in the days, but after Dookie they went for the money and changed their looks, music sound (they sound nothing like the first few albums), additude and all. Going to broadway makes you soft yes! But selling tickets for your show there for big amounts of money makes you a big arsehole that has no clue about what punk is about.
    So fuck Green Day and all their fake punk friends!
