the kids should go see this baby. it's got a lot of socio-political ramifications, and is entertaining as fuck to boot. it's open to a sequel as well*, but i really hope none will be made, it would spoil the sheer power of this unique and challenging film.

Backed hard. Fucking sick movie. I wouldn't even call it sci-fi. I don't think he sat down and said "I'm gonna make a movie about aliens" so much as "I'm gonna make a movie about racial discrimination and corporate evil" and the fact that a south african director made that movie, and shot heaps of it in Soweto of all places really boosts the impact of the film so much more.

If anyone hasn't seen it, doooo it.

I've noticed that there is a lot of overlap. It's a given that we share intellectual and philosophical backgrounds, apparently this also translates into artistic sensibility, as well. Thats' kind of interesting.

I like David Lynch's films, especially Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, and Blue Velvet (in that order). I like Shane Meadows too - This Is England, Dead Man's Shoes, Once Upon a Time in the Midlands, A Room for Romeo Brass, Somerstown (in no order). Aside from that, I like a whole bunch of exploitation flicks that I could make an endless list of.

Another great film is Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

Jep, good movies! I'll just post some that would also fit to your collection.

Jesus Camp (2006) - a doc about religion fanatics and indoctrination
Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999) - a film about the rise of microsoft and apple (not only for computer freaks)
Sacco e Vanzetti (1971) - a story of two anarchists who were unfairly charged for murder when it was really for their political beliefs
Religulous (2008) - a doc that is just jerking with religion fanatics (funny)

There's some good ones already mentioned, but a few of my faves that aren't already here include:

The Monty Python trilogy (The Holy Grail, Life Of Brian & The Meaning Of Life), especially for this priceless scene from The Holy Grail:

    ----------

    Scene 3
    [clop clop]
    ARTHUR: Old woman!
    DENNIS: Man!
ARTHUR: Old Man, sorry. What knight live in that castle over there?
    DENNIS: I'm thirty seven.
    ARTHUR: What?
DENNIS: I'm thirty seven -- I'm not old!
ARTHUR: Well, I can't just call you `Man'.
DENNIS: Well, you could say `Dennis'.
ARTHUR: Well, I didn't know you were called `Dennis.'
DENNIS: Well, you didn't bother to find out, did you?
ARTHUR: I did say sorry about the `old woman,' but from the behind
    you looked--
DENNIS: What I object to is you automatically treat me like an inferior!
    ARTHUR: Well, I AM king...
DENNIS: Oh king, eh, very nice. An' how'd you get that, eh? By
exploitin' the workers -- by 'angin' on to outdated imperialist dogma
which perpetuates the economic an' social differences in our society!
If there's ever going to be any progress--
WOMAN: Dennis, there's some lovely filth down here. Oh -- how d'you do?
ARTHUR: How do you do, good lady. I am Arthur, King of the Britons.
    Who's castle is that?
    WOMAN: King of the who?
    ARTHUR: The Britons.
    WOMAN: Who are the Britons?
ARTHUR: Well, we all are. we're all Britons and I am your king.
WOMAN: I didn't know we had a king. I thought we were an autonomous
    collective.
DENNIS: You're fooling yourself. We're living in a dictatorship.
A self-perpetuating autocracy in which the working classes--
WOMAN: Oh there you go, bringing class into it again.
DENNIS: That's what it's all about if only people would--
ARTHUR: Please, please good people. I am in haste. Who lives
    in that castle?
    WOMAN: No one live there.
ARTHUR: Then who is your lord?
WOMAN: We don't have a lord.
    ARTHUR: What?
DENNIS: I told you. We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take
it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week.
    ARTHUR: Yes.
DENNIS: But all the decision of that officer have to be ratified
    at a special biweekly meeting.
    ARTHUR: Yes, I see.
DENNIS: By a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs,--
    ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: --but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more--
ARTHUR: Be quiet! I order you to be quiet!
WOMAN: Order, eh -- who does he think he is?
    ARTHUR: I am your king!
WOMAN: Well, I didn't vote for you.
ARTHUR: You don't vote for kings.
WOMAN: Well, 'ow did you become king then?
ARTHUR: The Lady of the Lake,
    [angels sing]
her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur
from the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I,
    Arthur, was to carry Excalibur.
    [singing stops]
That is why I am your king!
DENNIS: Listen -- strange women lying in ponds distributing swords
is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power
derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical
    aquatic ceremony.
    ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: Well you can't expect to wield supreme executive power
just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
    ARTHUR: Shut up!
DENNIS: I mean, if I went around sayin' I was an empereror just
because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me they'd
    put me away!
ARTHUR: Shut up! Will you shut up!
DENNIS: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system.
    ARTHUR: Shut up!
DENNIS: Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system!
    HELP! HELP! I'm being repressed!
    ARTHUR: Bloody peasant!
DENNIS: Oh, what a give away. Did you here that, did you here that,
eh? That's what I'm on about -- did you see him repressing me,
    you saw it didn't you?

    ----------

    Persepolis
    Starship Troopers
    MASH
    Catch-22
    Enemy At The Gates
    Good Bye Lenin!
    1984
    Animal Farm (1954 animated version)
    Riff-Raff
    Pan's Labyrinth

Indeed, I'm new here, and it seems that almost every movie I actually like has already been mentioned. I feel at home! My personal absolute favorites, though, are:

    V for Vendetta
    Clerks
    The Boondock Saints
    American Hardcore
    Fight Club
    Pulp Fiction
    Reservoir Dogs
    City of God

I really want to see District 9, I haven't gotten around to it yet.

    Ichi the Killer
    Suspiria
Dawn of the Dead (the original, not the horrible remake)
    A Nightmare On Elm Street
    Blood Feast

aside from Dawn of the Dead, none of these are political in any way. but i'm a huge horror movie nerd. :)

    The Hustler
    Baby Face
    Duck Soup
    Heat
Brazil (one of the best sci-fi movies EVER!)
Kin-Dza-Dza (a Russian classic sci-fi, you can see it on You Tube, because you wont find it unless you live in the Russia as far as I know)
    Pretty much anything by Hitchcock
    Romeo is Bleeding

These are all the ones that are on my computer at the moment, so beyond that there's about 500 more to list.

I've been wanting someone to ask me this question for ages. Don't know what other people's faves i might be replicating here, but here's me best ever movies- in no particular order!

    Angels with dirty faces
    Taxi Driver
One Flew over the cuckoo's nest
    12 monkeys
    K-Pax
    Little Miss Sunshine
    Big Lebowski
    As Good as It gets
    I (heart) huckabees
    The Big White
    Training Day
    The Hunted
    Drag Me To Hell
    Pulp Fiction
    The Departed
    It's a Wonderful Life
    Rude awakening
    This Is England
    V 4 Vendetta
    Fight Club
Die Welle, (The Wave- must see for anarchists this one)
    Breakfast Club
The Holy Grail- my favourite ever monty python scene posted above by 'theoldpunk'!
    Life Of Brian
    American Beauty
    American History X
    The Prestige
    The Fountain
    Into The Wild
    Children Of Men
    City Of God
    Re-Animator
    From Beyond
    Street Trash
    Bad Taste

I could go on all ay, so I'll leave it at that!
Fave documentaries are mainly miscellanious 'nature', as in earth, and 'nature', as in the universe/discovery and pretty much anything by Naom Chomsky, Mark Thomas, John Pilger, Naomi Kliene. Earthlings is one of the most emotive things I've ever seen with regard to animal lib- really good info, but didn't delve into vivesection/testing as much as I'd have liked- it made me feel that they were ducking percieved and/or actual flaws in the argument against it's logic, (which I find often happens when trying to promote something 'radical' to the mainstream). I'd have been interested to know more to help me with my own ambivelance on the subject, (I'm against animal testing, et al, but I feel my argument is significantly weakened when developments/medical breakthrough's are made and I don't know shit about alternatives that could potantially yield the same benefits, but I'll take that to another thread!). Check out 'Taxi To The Dark Side' too.
I'll probably think of loads more movies now I'm finished!
