The album is finally released after many debates between ex-crass members concerning the release of a re-mastered edition of "the feeding of the 5,000"
( see here for the story: http://www.anarcho-punk.net/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=1799 )
Looks like they found a solution

The Crassical Collection is finally here, and the first release is the newly remastered The Feeding of the Five Thousand. After many years of being out of print, this legendary album has been been restored from the original analogue studio tapes, repackaged and bolstered by rare and unreleased tracks, and stunning new artwork from Gee... Vaucher, who has lovingly created what could only be considered a real artefact. Included in this package is a 64-page booklet featuring all lyrics along with extensive liner notes from band members Penny Rimbaud and Steve Ignorant, which shed light on the making of the record. Also included is CD-sized recreation of the iconic original fold-out poster sleeve.

“Five thousand's a crowd (four thousand nine hundred and ninety nine more than I imagined were going to buy the record), but two's company (I knew for certain that my Mum would want one), so it was on the plate, ready to serve, The Feeding of the Five Thousand.”

“We were setting out as purists: hard, uncompromising and utterly bemused.”

“On one thing we were very clear, in bringing a prosecution of Criminal Blasphemy against us the authorities would have been giving us the kind of publicity which overnight would have made us a household name. They were aware of this , and so were we. It was a situation that allowed us carte blanche to say pretty much whatever we wanted without any real fear of incrimination, a situation which over the next seven years we exploited to the hilt.”

“Easy listening? You ain't heard nothing yet.”

First released in 1978 on Small Wonder Records, and later re-released on the band's own Crass Records, The Feeding of the Five Thousand showed Crass as an anti-establishment and highly uncompromising act, and one that would influence countless other bands to follow.

The package comprises: CD in digiwallet, 64 page perfect-bound book of lyrics/liner notes/art/photos, miniature recreation of original fold-out poster sleeve, all in a cardboard slip-case. All new artwork from band member Gee Vaucher (aka G Suss) including a recreation of the original poster sleeve.
Liner notes from band founders Steve Ignorant and Penny Rimbaud. Newly remastered, and bolstered with rare and unreleased tracks from the same period.

This signals the first in a series of remastered versions of each of Crass' now legendary albums, each one including bonus tracks and brand new artwork.

    Release dates:
UK and Ireland 16 August 2010
Rest of the world asap - we'll post dates here.

If i just had the money

I love the labels though: "/Rock-Pop/Punk / Hardcore / Emo"

This was 10 years before anyone had spoken of Emo, and calling a band so anti-commercial as Crass Pop is really wrong too. Also, it's not really hardcore. It's a little funny

Yeah, i wondered when i was in a German record store and saw a Crass Record for 12€ with the print on "pay no more than 4§". Of course, it's a long time ago and money is different these days, but still.

But it isn't Crass records owning it anymore is it?

That being said, 14,99 GBP is standard price for records in my country - no wonder i'm so glad Anarcho-Punk.net offers downloads

I imagine the price has to do with the increase of production costs for the late 70's/early 80's, the contents of the package, and the need to make up some of the money that they will lose from people who will download the album on the internet - the worst thing with the modern punk scene is people who use their personal beliefs as an excuse to be thieving bastards.

    Being anti-capitalist =/= being a thief.

Due to current global inflation of all FIAT currencies, value of goods and services have more than doubled in some countries.
Most re-mastered discs go for about $19 in the states, not including shipping.
We will only see things get more costly in the near future, so stealing might be essential for some of us?

Sorry but it's bullshit... We are in the process of finding a place to press a record, and we can EASILY find places to produce 500 discs for 1,50euros each, INCLUDING artworks. I suppose that Crass made like 10,000 exemplaries of "the feeding of the 5,000", so it probably cost them like 0,50 euros each. Not even talking about how much money they made with the previous records and compilations (heard some nasty stories about how they made a lot of money with "bullshit detector" and kept everything for them).. The greatest working-class rip-off anyone ?

I really don't think you could find a place that can include a full 64-page booklet, mini-poster, and the disc for that price. When I looked into pro-pressing, cheap prices were little more than a four-page insert (at the most).

Besides, when a label sets a price they don't just factor in the price of production.

For one, most record labels try to break even well before they actually sell their stock - you have to factor in trades to other labels/distros, deadstock, etc. With the modern internet age, you also have to factor in loses from people downloading the album. After all, capitalism has bred generations of people who want to get the best deal and what's a better deal than free?

While I don't really know much about the darkside of Crass, I highly doubt that even if they sold every copy of the remaster in a couple of months they'd really be making a lot of money - a profit, sure, but I'd imagine that the majority of money would go to the next remaster.

I wouldn't be that excited to hear it to be honest, I have one of the originals and its been repressed so many times its ridiculous and each time progressively getting more expensive. Perhaps the unreleased tracks which I'm guessing were probably on the Demos LP that was released a couple of years ago.

the prices i posted included a 4 page booklet.

for 60 more pages, let's say it's gonna cost uh..... 0,50 euros more ?

Seriously, do you really think a 64 page booklet could justify going from like 0,50 euros each to 20 euros ?

Oh yeah i forgot... logical of profit

Since when Southern Records is about making profits ?

They're going to sell like 10,000 of this album... only 1 euro of profit would have been reasonnable.

Crass never had any problem selling their albums. It's one of the most famous punk bands. All their releases quickly went out of stock. They're not going to lose anything.

I didn't hear about a next remaster planned.

And anyway, they don't need money to release a next remaster since they're also going to make money out of it...

This must have been a compromise on penny's part, since it sounded like in an interview i read with him a while back he wanted to post the remastered stuff for free on a website... i have to wonder that certain members of the band decided to be greedy bastards about the whole deal.

I'm not sure if Steve, Penny, Gee or Eve have any dealings with the rest of the band anymore... apparently they hadn't spoken to Pete Wright or Phil Free in years last time I checked (which was 2 years ago)

According to this interview, the re-mastered edition wasnt planned to be released because the other members didn't agree. So if it is released today, its because other members finally agree together. The album was remastered by Penny.

According to Steve Ignorant official facebook page :

Well, there's one positive thing about the album being sold a little more expensive - hopefully, the record label will dare to use the profit to release records from smaller bands which may not sell as much.
Of course i find that 15GBP is quite a lot, but as i've said, it's what all newer CD's cost in my country
