It's a mystery to me. I realize how hugely influential they were and I can hang with the vast majority of the first wave UK anarcho stuff, but try as I might, I could never get into Crass. Is there anybody else who doesn't like that band? This is a really dumb topic, I know, but felt it needed to be asked since everybody seems so fucking shocked every time I mention this.

Crass is an acquired taste, specially if you are younger and have been used to listening to bands with better musicianship...but in Crass its not so much the sound that's important, it's the messages

I'm going on twelve years of punk rock and I listen to some pretty raw sloppy shit. I've been trying to listen to Crass for years and haven't acquired the taste yet. Ha. That's what I'm sayin'. Just something about that particular band...

It's kind of the same way with me. I respect all that they've done, and I even like a couple songs, but overall I never really got into them.

I think it is completly unacceptable that u have personal taste in music and happen not to care for a band that alot of us like. How dare u have opinions and personal preferences! I am deeply offended! (Sarcasm) :lmao:

Hahah love the South Park reference =P

As for the topic, meh it is just your taste. Just because they have been influential on the movement doesn't mean you have to enjoy how they sound.

crass isn't musically artistic, it is lyrically artistic :p

Beside the feeding of the 5,000 crass is really bad recording and nasty sound... its their lyrics who made them famous, not their sound.

But some songs sounds good, like "do they owe us a living", "punk is dead", "banned from the roxy", "so what", "you're already dead", and a few others

Who cares if you don't like crass? to each their own, the world won't end or anything. as long as you have respect for what they did, and (most of them) continue to do.

and for the record, i love the musician ship and music of crass, it's so unique and different (even today) then anything i've ever heard. I like bands that take chances musically instead of trying to sound like a jillion other bands. Bands that sound alike are boring and i'd rather just read their lyric sheets then listen to their music. (though in fairness i only really like feeding, stations, penis envy and some singles up to that era, Christ the album and yes sir i will are boring to me to sit through other then a few songs.)

I don't like motorhead, but you don;t see me starting a thread to ask others why I don't like them...

Me too I never really "got" crass, I know they are lyrics, not music but personally I prefer songs with a little melody in it, Propagandhi, Oi Polloi etc.
But I do enjoy their more melodic songs like Punk is Dead, Do they owe us a living?, So what? (yea I only have one of their albums :( )

Crass really got me around 1984, and I'm still not able to express what happened to me when it happened, but I guess it was just the unusual sound that smacked the lyrics/the message right into my poor brain - yukkk!

There's an old saying in England: The Pistols made you wanna smack your head against the wall, and Clash will give you a reason to do it - but I think Crass made me see/feel/recognize the wall and what's hidden behind it, I'm still not a fan, so no bestoflist, and I can't agree with their resolute non-violence position - but they really did something to/for me and I'm still trying to get straight with them.

The Mob, Exit-Stance and Conflict pre Steve Ignorant are much better than Crass.
Over hyped but important none the less. First two albums good, few good singles. Musically sucked but can appreciate them for what they were.

I like Crass a lot, but most people i know take a while before starting to like them. Took a little while for me too. I knew Punk is Dead, but had not really got the rest, until i listened to Big A little A, and after that, i started liking them a lot. I listen to much of their stuff today

Yeah, kinda what I figured. I get the whole "message before music" thing about Crass alot. To those that were mildly irritated by this thread, relax. I just thought it'd be kind of amusing. I'm not actually looking to justify my opinions, let alone on the fuckin' internet of all things. :D Cheers.

there is alot of good punk and other genres that have a simialr message to crass with more melodic music. But the point of crass was to play kind of a weird avant-garde, jazzy, mock-militant punk style of anti-music. I don't think they wanted people to listen to their music and enjoy themeselves, even though there are some of us masochists that do just that. But crass did give us a break sometimes and put out some very melodic and musically very talented tracks (Bloody Revolutions, Big A Little A, etc.) that still kept the message.

crass is just a blip in time. nowadays, a band couldn't make a cacophony of sound like crass did and sell nearly as many albums as crass did. what's up with the kids, anyway?
