I haven't logged in for months, I know, I'm running a pre-intel mac, it's a bitch to get around the internet these days, let me tell you. Anyway, I'm still alive, and hi.

So, down to business--have you seen this shit? I thought it was a JOKE: http://news.antiwar.com/2010/06/18/sena ... internet/#

Reproduced in full for the link-phobic:

Lieberman Bill Would Claim Entire Internet as US 'Asset'
by Jason Ditz, June 18, 2010

The introduction of a new Senate bill, S.3480, dubbed the “Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act of 2010,” is sparking concerns about a massive power grab over the Internet under the guise of “national security.”

The bill, proposed by Sen. Joe Lieberman (I – CT) claims the entire Internet, the whole global computer network and everything on it, as a “national asset” of the United States, and seeks to give President Obama the power to seize control over broad swaths of it with no oversight during a “National Cyber Emergency,” which would itself be something the president would be able to declare at any time.

But easily the most controversial aspect of the nearly 200 page bill is what is being called a “kill switch,” granting the president the power to shut down the entire Internet across the planet for national security reasons. Sen. Collins (R – ME), a supporter of the bill, claimed it was necessary to prevent a “cyber 9/11.”

The bill amounts to a remarkable claim of presidential power, claiming a large portion of the global economy as a specific asset of the United States and further claiming the right to nationalize or destroy it in whole or part on a whim. The news may be disquieting enough for Americans faced with this sort of power grab from their own government, but for foreigners the idea that another nation can commandeer the Internet, cut them off from it, or render it unusable is totally shocking, and not surprisingly, a source of no small consternation.

When reading through the bill, one can’t notice how frankly it claims such enormous powers, or imagine how shocked the entire planet would be if Sen. Lieberman proposed the same measures without adding the prefix “cyber” to every few words. Couching it as a technical matter, with the usual technical ignorance of a Congressman thrown in for good measure, is a way to hide exactly how sweeping the new powers would truly be.

In fact Sen. Lieberman insisted that the very fact that the internet is now “a necessity of modern life” was the justification behind his bill. We can’t, it seems, have billions of people worldwide living a modern life without the president’s imprimatur.

Fucking US government - Always trying to control the world and dictate over all of us.
I doubt they will get world wide control of the internet, but i'm sure we will see an increased amount of security measures on the internet. Sites like this would be "potential breeding grown for terrorism and other anti-american activities".

It's definitely gonna be a resource to have the power over the internet in years - It already is, but lets face it, the governments can't allow sites such as Wikileaks if they want to keep up their propaganda.

Who knows? Maybe the next big war will be for imperialists wanting to conquer the internet.

I don't even think it's POSSIBLE, but it flips my shit. These are the kinds of bright ideas that the people running our country come up with. It makes my BRAIN HURT. I wouldn't let a jackass like that manage the local thrift store, y'know?

not new... the US is talking about claiming ownership of the internet and controlling it since years, because it was created by the US army... they are paranoid of a cyber attack by chineses or something

I know the sentiment's not new, it's just the on-going ignorance and sense of entitlement (and the LEVEL of it) pisses me off. This is far from the first time they've tried to legislate the internet, but this is one of the more audacious attempts at it that I've seen.

ugh i hate when a jew lives up to the negative stereotypes... but what you said is so true, Lieberman is a total piece of shit. He's the also the champion for video game censorship. A lot of people were bummed that Gore didn't end up US prez, but if so this clown would have been the vice, so maybe it wasn't a total loss...

Because of the way the internet works and how it was designed it would be impossible to shut it down without shutting down every single phone line, sattelite, cell phone network etc. Even radiowaves are used in some parts of the world to transmit internet data. The idea of an international internet killswitch is impossible. As with most politicians Joe Lieberman has no idea how things work. :lmao:
