We really do need a CURRENT EVENTS section...

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (June 18) -- The wife and son of a South African man allegedly beaten to death because he wanted to change the TV channel to a World Cup match have been jailed until a court hearing after the tournament ends next month.

Police say David Makoeya, 61, fought with his wife and two children last Sunday over what to watch on television at their home in Limpopo province, in South Africa's far northeast. Makoeya wanted to watch the Germany versus Australia soccer game that night, but his family wanted to see a gospel program.

"He said, 'No, I want to watch soccer,' and that's when the argument started," police spokesman Mothemane Malefo told reporters from several news agencies. After fighting over the remote control, the father got up to change the TV channel by hand, and his family "started assaulting him."

"It appears they banged his head against the wall," Malefo said. "They phoned the police only after he was badly injured, but by the time the police arrived, the man was already dead."

Makoeya's 68-year-old wife, Francina; his 36-year-old son, Collin; and 23-year-old daughter, Lebogang, were all arrested on Sunday night and appeared on court on Tuesday. It's unclear whether they've yet been charged.

After the hearing, the daughter was released on the equivalent of about $200 bail, but her mother and brother remain behind bars. They face another court hearing on July 27.

The cheapest World Cup tickets were offered to South Africans for about $20, which is still more than many locals can afford. Many South Africans have been watching matches at home instead or in huge open-air screening facilities set up by FIFA, world soccer's governing body.

Because he wanted to watch sports and his family wanted to watch some religious bullshit, so they killed him.
Moral: tv kills and religion is an instigator

What drives someone to NEED to watch Jesus worship on Television so badly that you would kill? Like Heroin? Something about evangelism really does a whack job on some peoples brains, like releasing endorphins in an irregular amount so it becomes like a drug. Does anybody know of any studies done in this field that we could post?

I think everyone is missing the point. It's really not that they killed him because of a religious program. It has more to do with how people can and will kill each other over something so petty as TV. Anger is a powerful force in the human psyche.

i'm not really blaming it on the fact that they wanted to watch a religious program, it's just the irony of the situation. either way, it's really pathetic.

No we got that point, but I'm talking beyond that point, these people didn't kill each other they killed the person who dared to change the channel from their drug of choice. The television is just a syringe, religious fervor was the heroin.

In a way though, it is because the program was religious. I don't know if they'd kill him if the simpsons were on instead. Tv is just another tool that religious communities use to brainwash people. Usually when people watch tv its like brain candy, they don't always think about the images and sounds they see and hear. Religious programing is like a commercial for candy bar, nobody needs a candy bar, they're empty calories but when people see a commercial for them, they kinda want it subconsciously because they're not thinking, just absorbing. Religious programing is just like that, no one needs religion but when you just sit and blindly take in what the percher on tv is saying, you want to be more religious.
Now instead of people only having to take in that bullshit on their day of worship, they can tern on the tv and hear it anytime.

In the way of studies, I have found that people with additive personalities will become very zealous if they get into religion (remember kids, spirituality is a gate way drug). Also people going through hard times will use their zealous beliefs to deal instead of confronting the real issue. Its just like a drug, someone can't have enough booze, someone else can't get enough jesus

The exact same thing has been shown for people and politics. There is little difference between the mind set of a zealot in Animal Rights or religion. Anyone that lets any idea control and define who they are runs the risk of becoming a zealot.

I've heard of studies yes, but I can't remember who did them or where. I think I saw it in a clip from some Discovery Channel or Nat Geo doc.

Sure, there's the religious fervor angle. People can get that high and get that addicted to anything that involves being in a group and of one accord--religion, sports, politics, comic books, Star Trek, any TV shows, any sort of fandom. Hell, people beat family members senseless over changing the channel away from the (American) football game, here. (altho, to be fair, the thing that went out saying that there's more domestic violence calls on Superbowl Sunday is just an urban myth.) Humans are still wired like that, I guess, some more strongly than others.

But I don't want to take away from the fact that what that family did was still pretty fucking horrific. And yeah, agreed, the subject matter was damned ironic. Somehow, I don't think their god would approve. ...At least I hope not. You can never tell, with some people's god(s) these days.

I guess it'll be better for poor me to continue educating my kids atheistic and non-violent and to stay true to their already heathen Mom while I do the soccer thing in my spare time with my mates - and just to make sure - hide the TV in the basement...
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AND RELIGION ARE OPIUM FOR THE PEOPLE! even if ol' Karl M. said this...
