Hint, look for accessible billboards and spray a message on them or tip a bucket of paint down them.

    Do your bit.

absolutely. Its a way to get people to conform to social norms and a capitalistic society. You said it yourself, its way to get people to buy something they don't need to conform to a certain ascribed status that society finds desirable. Its a way of keeping people in line and their wallets empty.
The army/navy/marines commercials are the worst, its scary how many young kids fall for that shit everyday. But if they were honest ads almost no one would join.

I was at a Job Expo last year and the army was there, I was in a special class for people who were studying for trades (I was doing Hospitality, and was the odd one out). They were all standing in a circle talking to some guy about Army trades, and becoming field engineers and shit. All the guys were really interested in it, and we all got free drink bottles with army logo's and slogans on them. Its pretty blatant propaganda, but hey, Free drink bottle...

'Propaganda' simply means a form of communication aimed at influencing or convincing someone/s of a position.
Insofar as this is concerned, most of the stuff i write is 'propaganda'.

To clarify, it would be better to problematise media discourses that claim 'impartiality' and 'objectivity' where they are in fact 'propaganda'. It is largely an issue of acknowledgment and of who's doing the talking, ie 'The Coming Insurrection' is clearly propaganda, and openly so; the news by corporate media is propaganda masquerading as objective reporting. Moreover, one is more likely to believe something from say, the Guardian then Fox News, this is due to an image of 'legitimacy' on the part of the author/publication; therefore, bullshit racist rhetoric in the 'serious' press is perhaps more insidious and dangerous than Glenn Beck.

"shoot at and get shot at by poor brown people. Join the army."
Doesn't really sound too appealing does it?

    RE The Army:
I personally think the system of economic conscription in place in the US is the most fucked up, and central, factor that encourages people to join the Army. Ads suck of course, but it is economic circumstances that make the army really attractive.
Whilst this occurs within Australia, it is to a significantly lesser extent. It may be worth noting that largely dead institutions like Cadets (scouts with guns practically) still exist within the most exclusive schools for rich kids. This may be due to Australia's history of successful anti-militarist working class campaigning(We were the only belligerent in WW1 who did not have conscription for example), and thus the acknowledgment by the bourgeoisie that their kids may be the only ones willing to go fight in some trade war (although mural Australia can always be mobilised by Nationalist sentiment).

Of course, you never see rich kids enlisting. I think the points about adds was that it puts the idea of the army in kids head at a very young age. Even if they could afford college or trade school, they have it engrained in their heads that being part of the armed forces is glorious and heroic and will choose that over other paths.
I'm not disagree with you, just showing that they're trying to implant ideas in any kid they can. Economic factors play a huge part but i've seen many well off kids signing up.

No doubt, the State actively engages in socialisation. It is necessary to its survival. Whilst I don't believe in the rather simplistic idea of 'false consciousness', it nevertheless holds true that hegemonic power reinforces its position through economics and the monopoly on violence, as well as through ideas.

With regards to the Army's PR policy, I see it operating through two main tactics.
    1. With the reality of war and one's involvement in it through Armed Service for the State being horrific in the extreme, it is necessary to control the use of language (I include visual language here) surrounding the topic. Doublespeak terms like: 'friendly fire', 'neutralise' (kill), 'shock and awe', etc, etc, and the complete disconnect from reality in the TV spectacle of border line fireworks displays and video game aesthetics when covering war are examples of this deliberate misuse of language designed to confuse rather than clarify war. Moreover, embedded 'journalism' operates similarly insofar as it encourages empathy and sympathy for the soldiers by the journalist. This no doubt undermines 'objectivity' (which is largely a myth, but there are degrees of it) or even a sense of context and connection with the people impacted by war. Basically, by defining the language used when discussing war allows the State to run ad campaigns in which the Army can plausibly look like some high tech school camp.
    2. Incessant bombardment of recruitment campaigns targeting youth. Not exactly a subtle persuasive device, but nevertheless they got the resources so why the fuck not?

Finally, I still hold the view that economic conscription, as i outlined above, is the central recruitment tool for the US Armed Forces.

That's not entirely true. Yes the wealthy generally do not "enlist". They tend to join through West Point, The Naval Academy and The Air Force Academy.

I personally like the idea of making education available to those that otherwise could not afford it. This should always be paired with some sort of public service, military or some other community service. What I disagree with is the wasteful way our country (USA) has been abusing our military.
