'The Sun is shining, I feel good... no one's gonna stop me now'. OK enough with the Queen quotes now. I've actually gotten kind of sick and tired of reading about killer cops, oil spills and other assorted piles of shit. It seems most of us have been focussing our attention on these PROBLEMS, rather than any initiatives offering SOLUTIONS. So here's a thread to share POSITIVE stories.
One I have is a local project called the 'Ruilwinkel' (= trade-shop). It's in the next town over and is an initiative to allow underprivileged people to get second-hand things without money. You start out with 15 points (which is the 'currency' at the store). For an idea on what you can do with it, 6 points got me 2 25-cd cd-racks. To get more points you just trade in usable old crap from your garage, attic, wherever and then you can get new stuff in there. There's even clothes in there (even saw some Doc Martins for 10 points or something).

I volunteer at a soup kitchen at least once a week, more if I can. On an average night we feed around 400 people. Sometimes 500. Of this number about 1/4 are children. It is a good feeling to know that at least those kids are not going to bed hungry.

General Education Diploma is a way to get an equivalent of a High School Diploma by passing certain basic aptitude tests....

The uhm... thing you're quoting is from a Five Finger Death Punch song that's anti-war, basically. It's my signature and irrelevant to my question about GEDs :p

And thanks for clearing it up Punkmar, we have something similar here, but it's only for 'higher' education stuff, like after high school, basically a kind of exam to test your theoretic knowledge and see if it's up to scratch to start the study unhindered or lagging behind, basically. If that's NOT it, I must've misinterpreted.

It certainly is, but that's what other threads are about. This one is about setting a good example, and that is just as important. Good and successful actions are just as good at spreading awareness as is pointing out a problem.

I managed to get a fairly large activist group started at my school which is pretty damn nice. Gay rights are steadily becoming more and more accepted. We are able to discuss all of these things without being labeled treasonous and being executed. We have a community of like minded individuals. The nuclear non proliferation bills are steadily being signed by more country's.

Am I ruining the 'positive' vibes if I note that the 'negative comments' thread is ruling a fuckload harder than this one? :ecouteurs:

Maybe im just a god damn hippy but that kind of pisses me off. Not that people have negative things to say because that is important but that people would so much rather discuss the negative then the good they are doing to change it.
