So the D.I.Y ethic is a big part of the anarcho-punk movement, weather its growing your own vegetables, knitting a scarf, brewing/distilling your own alcohol or being able to fix your own car. Anyway, ive started this little space so that people can talk about the philosophy behind the D.I.Y ethic, and talk about what YOU do your self to become more self sufficient.
diy is great in theory, but there is nothing wrong with having other people help you out or trade you goods and or services. But yes diy is a good thing.
I think that the theory behind the punk D/I/Y ethic is not that you have to do everything YOURSELF. I think it means that it is better to try it yourself, then maybe ask a friend who may have more expertise than you. I often get my tech-savvy friends to help me out with computer issues, and i think that is better than calling some guy up to come over and charge you a fee.
I try to make things myself but because sometimes you have to buy the resources you need and you can't grow them or trade them with someone cause that wouldn't happen where i live because it is a small tiny island concrete jungle but i do try make patches (which are really shitty), t shirts, pants and shit and i fix most of my shit by myself. I agree with both of you guys diy is a great thing and you can learn a lot from it and i agree with both of you guys, sometimes you just cant make everything or do everything by yourself. diy is also pretty fun .
DIY, to me, means taking back control of your life, istead of just sitting paralyzed on your asses, waiting for things to happen. In this global capitalist economy, things only exist if they can be sold and consumed. Therefore I think it is a powerfull weapon against capitalism, if we're able to create things for ourselves (both in groups, communities and as individuals), instead of just buying everything, and letting theese assholes dictate what do eat, drink, think, say and do. we need to break free from the traditional ideas of professionalism, and realise that we're capable of doing allmost everything we want , and that we can learn so much from each other. I hate the whole concept about "thoosing a path in life" and doing only what you are good at. Fuck no! Today I am a chef, yesterday I was a graphic designer, and tomorrow I'll stay up all night, just to see the sun rise...
The "D.I.Y. Ethic" is liberating yourself from the capitalist system. It as simple as growing your own garden, or as complex as opening a non-profit mechanic's shop... More or less, its about taking initiative and doing something rather than looking for an easy way out.
d.i.y for me really helps me feel honest about whatever im doing [life, art, music, film, anything]. For me, it doesnt bring all those distractions and surface hype [mainstream trends/hype, fame, big-advertising, big-promoting, commercialism, corporate businesses and the like.. the list goes on and on].. d.i.y for me, brings out the essence in whatever it is im interested in. For me, it gets the to core of things. I really admire and respect the d.i.y approach. I feel its the approach i will always take. ..quas
hmmm i am happy to have construction and carpentry experince. it helps to be able to recycle things and build things out of old things and being able to fix broken things it saves tons of time and money
The DIY culture is awesome. i grow vegetables in my backyard, recycle stuf that is found on the street. i dont trow away a lot because most of the stuf is stil usefull. i repaired all my bikes with ald broken bikes people trew away.
Yes! i just cant understand my friends that do same things everyday. Also DIY is great. Last thing i have done is making ______ (im not sure how to call it, i dont speak english too good. it can be found in the shoe, and it is between the foot, and the sole, not ground..). Shoe was useless without it, and now that i havent bought it, and i made it so comfortably (i think "comfortably" should not be written that way... ), it makes me happy in some way..
