hm..come to think of it...every member of the chilli peppers are one of the best at what they do; the drummer, guitarists, bass, and I think the vocalist is pretty good

Well, i prefer a little different playing style.
Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa are both great guitarplayers though.

my favorite is Thurston (i think he's called) from Sonic Youth. Alternative playing style, but incredibly talented, also technically. In my opinion some of the best guitarplaying in music history.

lets not get into that as many jazz bass players can make those two sound infintile and I'm sure Les and Flea would tell you the same

I never did get all the hype about Jimmy Hendrix, sure he is a very good guitar player but why should he be everybody's favorite guitar player. There are recordings that are really bad like his version of Sunshine of your love or some stuff where he plays acoustic. I'm far more inclined towards people like Tommy Iomi or Bill Steer, they produced far more music that I enjoy than Jimmy Hendrix and were very original and pushing the envelope all the time. I also enjoy John McLaughlin and some Ry Cooder stuff. By far the best drummer I saw live was John French. AS for the bass players the only name that comes to mind is Geezer Butler, there must be some name I'm forgetting but just can't think at the moment...

Lemmy is likely my favorite bassist. The bass riff on “Ace of Spades” is what inspired me to pick up the instrument to begin with. Aside from that, I'm also inspired by Cliff Burton, Geezer Butler, and Tom Angelripper (Sodom) as well... I love what Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) does too, although I really can't call him an influence to by playing style.

As far as guitar goes, my top spots both go to men named Randy; in this case Rhoads and Uchida. While I really don't care for any band that Rhoads was in, he was still a great guitarist that was equally charismatic. Randy Uchida (of GISM fame) also proved that you can play heavy metal guitar solos and still be punk as fuck. Both also played with genuine passion, which seems to be missing a lot of the time in music.

flea also can play a mean trumpet... maybe not at a jazz level (though he was trained) and if you want to talk about jazz muscians, most of them hold a higher candle to anything rock n rollers have done, (jimmy smith, wes montgomery, miles davis, herbie hancock, idris muhammad,, grover washington jr, george benson, freddie hubbard, urbie green, quincy jones, just to a name a few...)

Yeah I recently saw a documentary of a famous junkie jazz trumpeter and guess who was hosting his stay in Hollywood? a young strung out Flea....

Django Rheinhardt alone with only two fingers on his fret hand took every guitar player known to man, to school :lmao:

    Punkmar:
Django Rheinhardt is one of the greatest guitarplayers of all times - his son was amazing too. (I think he was called Babic Rheinhardt)

Also, a flamenco player like Paco De Lucia is way better than any metal guitar player i've ever seen

Or Manitos De Plata too, and if you listen to Mahavishnu Orchestra era John McLaughlin you can hear the direct rip offs that Hanneman and King base all of Slayers twang doodling from :p.

I like some of Jimi Hendirx's stuff but the thing i always found amazing about him was that he was a left-handed player BUT he played a right handed guitar. This blows my mind! He played backwards in a sense.
Check out some pictures/videos, it's pretty cool.

In my opinion Neil Young is and amazing guitarist and musician. Also Steve Harris from Iron Maiden is an awesome songwriter/bassist. There's more but that's all i can think of right now haha.

Correction deadsmart, Hendrix played left-handed guitars and preferred left-handed guitars but like me could play right-handed guitars as well when needed, usually because he didn't have his guitar with him.

na...His guitar was specially re-stringed for him...so he didn't play in backwards...it just looked backwards. He is mostly considered the best because of his fret-board knowledge, in other words he can play hard riffs while also singing...
AND he could make up solos on stage, not a big deal now since alot of people can do it but back in those days...
AND he had a really good stage presence....(woodstock)

    i wouldnt not really say jimi hendrix just becuase of all of the covers/not alot of work so not really enough work for me to gauge by.. + he seemed to only have 1 style i.e. not versitille at all i.e. some one like george thorogood who can play rock/blues/country/hardrock where jimi just did the whole everyones on lsd thing.. and theres pretty much a whole generation of guitarists that can play his songs so many guys makin money playing his music. as for cliff burton i would say that hes overrated as litterally he was just a guitar player that couldnt cut it, so he started playing bass like a guitar, but most bassists are bad so he seemed really good. i forget the name but the bassist for the who was really good. for my list it would have to be;
dimebag darrell - pantera, damageplan, rebel meets rebel,
    dave murray - iron maiden
micheal shenker - ufo, the scorpions, msg
    stevie ray vaughan
tonny iommi - jethro tull, black sabbath, heaven and hell

for drums i would have to say vinne paul just because hes really good and he has his own style where he changes the drum beat multiple times in every song changing with almost every riff but always keeping that heat seaking lock on the time.
