I don't have a problem with straight edge. Good to see that they believe in a cause. I myself don't do drugs but couldn't be straight edge as I like a beer or two. I am a vegan but brew my own beer so I know that it is vegan as well and doesn't use animal products. I don't try and impress my lifestyle on others. It's what is right for me and what I believe in. My wife isn't vegan, she hates the cruelty to animals but unfortunately doesn't like 90% of vegan foods and therefore if she tried this lifestyle would run into serious health problems from lack of nutrition pretty quickly. She understands that vegan food doesn't need to be boring but she doesn't like tofu, soya milk, chick peas, beans of many sorts, TVP, or a lot of vegetables, greens or fungi.

Yeah, i wasnt at all saying that theyre all like that. Whats funny is the "asshole"
straight edge kids are getting their stupid ideas from shitty bands like xAFBx,
and xTYRANTx.. Maybe there should be a militant group against asshole straight edge.

I'd just like to say that the asshole straight edgers have totally ruined the movement for me. I cringe every time I hear the name, I've only met ONE straight edger in my life that I didn't feel like hitting with a hammer (in real life, of course, I'm sure there are a lot of really nice edgers here too.) Ugh. And in all honesty, I think I qualify as straight edge (no drugs, no meat, no alcohol. Do you have to give up sex? Or cigarettes?), but I'll be damned to be aligned with any of those assholes (again, just the people I've met, not necessarily the people here)

Ian Mackye said there were no rules... but i think in general yes no cigerrettes, that's a given, but the no sex thing depends on how asshole your crewmates are :) (i think it basically meant monogamy was ok, but sleeping around was a nonon.... who cares most sXers cant wait to turn on and call out their own anyways.

Ian has always said it was a deeply personal thing at that time and never meant for a movement to come out of it, in fact he's embarrased by the whole thing being attributed to his song... Ian drinks now by the way...

Are you referring to the 'Courage Crew'? I'm from Detroit and those half heads were nothing but idiots. I live with one of the founders of that shitty crew, and I use to get fucked up with him for years, this was of course years after the crew faded away.

yes actually I live in Michigan and those assholes always show up at good shows and ruin them... They've been making a bit of a come back lately and its just annoying. Glad to hear the founder broke edge though it always makes me laugh when that happens to the militant ones.

In some ways can you blame him? I'd be embarrassed too if I was him, this was a man who didn't want moshing at his shows and now attributed to starting what can be a violent subculture.

Me too! No kidding. I did not know that.
Ian though, is brilliant. He didn't mean to start sXe. It's kinda like that kid who killed himself because Ozzy told him to, or whatever. It's not his fault, it's just a song.

But I'm not gonna lie, I'm sXe. Not because of Ian, or anybody though. Just because it's what I feel is right. I don't push it, nor do I bash people for choosing not to be. It's a choice, be yourself.

By the way, is it wierd to have a Mankind? backpatch on my leather with 'XXX' written under it? I always get shit for it.

i doubt this, though who knows, but about ten years ago i got to meet brian baker and i asked if Ian was still 'straight edge' and brian's response was that he is the real deal and still lives his life in that way.

Well you can doubt it all you'd like but the fact remains that Ian has an occasional drink ( I think he said wine ) and has had plenty of sex and other things that straight-edgers poo poo about, here he talks about his feelings on the straight edge 'movement' and t'wards the end of the clip lets you know how he really feels about it :lmao: I still admire him on so many other levels that it doesn't really matter whether he has or hasn't its his business and his business alone...

and this is Ian interviewed by Ian:

Well I'm BentEdge...

I just can't bring myself to use "Straight" as a prefix for identifying myself in any way.

Yeah, that would be weird if I actually paid for it. I got it for free. I would never contribute to the fur/leather industry by paying for something like that.

would you wear a "free" fur coat? would you eat "free" burgers?
wearing leather perpetuates that its ok to wear animals.
