that wasn't really the point. 2 of their 4 major label albums i liked a lot (stranger than fiction, the gray race) and 2 of them are in my opinion the worst albums of their careers (no substance, the new america) i don't remember my point exactly, got caught up in a silly petty argument (but those are the best type, because no one's feelings are likely to get hurt or anything) and i don't feel like rereading the posts, but basically anyone who claims the offspring and green day are 'punk' don't know what they are talking about. I still stand by that. anyways, to each their own, anarchy is gray, not black and white.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I said Green Day WERE punk (Past tense.). A few years back they reinvented themselves musically and stylistically, mutating into a stadium rock outfit that bears only a slight resemblance to their former selves. However, there really isn't any substantial reason why Offspring should not still be regarded as punk as the band has not really changed stylistically, musicially, etc. As far as I can see the major greivances are that they have been enormously successful (A capital crime in the punk scene.) and eventually signed to a major. I have real difficulty accepting these as hanging offenses, and niether, by themselves, negate the sufficient conditions for punk rock.
    I also resent the implication.

yawn i stated my reasons for disilikng offspring already in this thread, if you really care u can go back and read for it, but it's prolly better to just let it die... and i still say they aren't even the least bit punk, and that's my opinion, and i'm sticking with it.

Well for sure, punk does not mean 'anarcho'. In my mind, the 'spirit' of punk is in rejection of something conventional, often in a loud and aggressive manner (not necessarily music). That could be political, social, anything really, and could include the established recording industry, but it doesn't have to reject the latter to be 'punk'. So I have no problem calling Green Day, etc, punk, though I might add that it's not very good punk, in the same way that cheap wine from the local supermarket is still 'wine' (almost), and no doubt sells well, as you can still get drunk on it.

    Exactly. It comes down to the sufficient conditions of punk rock. Just off the top of my head, I'd say those conditions are the following;

Bands formed at the birth of punk and afterwards, this could be debated, but by say, 1974, certainly, punk was firmly established.

Music expressing in form or content a rebellious nature or a challenge to the status quo.

Bands affiliating themselves with punk rock, or drawing inspiration from other punk bands.

You could tweak it, but I think that about sums it up.

This is a matter of taste, which is subjective. Although I think from 1,039 Smooth to Nimrod, Green Day were brilliant. As for the cheap wine comparison, while being extremely popular, I think one has to draw a distinction between them and other popular bands in that they wrote all their own material, and came out of the underground punk scene. However, this has all ben covered, already.

Can we call Paramore punk now?

And why do you defend Green Day so much? Why do you consider them punk (were)? I've seen them as pop-punk/college rock then they went emo-ish.

No, because they don't meet the sufficient conditions. As far as I can see, not that I pay much attention to them, they have no real connection to, and don't take any substantial influence from, punk rock.

"Why do you defend them so much?" Well, I really don't have any personal drive to be a spokesman for the band, of any sort. My issue is people who have no idea what they're talking about authoritatively proclaiming this or that band is not punk for really stupid reasons.

Why do I consider them punk? Because they were a punk band, up until they decided to become Queen or Air Supply or whatever. They're music is (Obviously) heavily inspired by the Ramones, the Buzzcocks, and other old-school punk bands. The members all met through the California punk scene, they played at the same venues as the Dead Kennedys, and label-mates Op Ivy, they toured with Bad Religion, etc. They took their musical style from earlier punk bands, came out of the punk scene, and frankly, remained essentially unchanged until the disastrous American Idiot. In short, they meet the sufficient conditions.

Second, the criticisms have been for the most part universally stupid. I mean, what is the justification for arguing that they were not a punk band?
Lots of People Like Them-Give me a break.
They Sound Too Good- Well we certainly can't have that! I mean, god fucking forbid. I think the sarcasm should be clear. This is really stupid. Second, this is really following in the tradition of some of their biggest influences, like the Ramones and the Buzzcocks, I know they've covered the Ramones, I think they also recorded at least one Buzzcocks cover. I see Green Day as following most directly in the tradition of bands like the Ramones, Buzzcocks, the Damned and Gen X somewhat, the Dickies, that sort of thing.
They Sing Songs About Love/Romance-Well, we're going to have to throw out the Ramones, Buzzcocks again, and dozens of other bands. Again, this is almost too stupid to respond to.
They Signed to a Major-This is the most controversial, but it really shouldn't be. Signing to a major label, which didn't happen until, Dookie, mind, in no way, by itself, merits reclassifying a band as something other than punk. Sorry, cry me a river.
Now, if they were put together by a major label, or radically changed their style upon signing to a major, or if said company was exercising substantial creative control, (Which isn't the case.) THEN you'd have a legitimate case.

I'm just sick of the bullshit.
