ok. so i spend alot of time at my buddys place. its become pretty much our group of friends place to chill. get drunk we even named it the zoo. there is a long story behind the name. to shorten it down it had to do with lots of acid and a few dogs.. him and his roomate are fans of all differnt kinds of music and i respect that. alot of the time they have on some old school rap like wu tang clan and all the differnt members of the wu tang clan's solo stuff.

at first i brushed it off and did not really pay much attention to it. i wasent going to bitch about my buddys music in his own home. but after a while i started really lisening more. catching lines here and there. but its been about 2 years maybe we have been chillin there. and i gotta say its kinda grown on me. so now when they put on some wu tang i dont mind it as much. im not gunna go lisening to them on my free time but its not bad.

i think i had that first not down feeling for the music because when some one says rap i think 50 cent or gangster G guy at the corner trying to support his baby momma. but the old school rap isent so bad. its not all about crack hookers and money. but like more real situations and more human things to sing about.

once getting past that and i really lisened to the words. and let myself feel the flow that wu tang is famous for i gotta say it aint so bad. and at times its a pretty good lisen and make a good drinking atmorspher ..has any one else not liked rap music but learned to get used to it and enjoy it from time to time? maybe you were down right from the start with rap?

what do you think about groups like wu tang clan? or the shitty ones like 50 cent and all those guys. dont remember their names. what about eminem guy? iv lisened quite a bit to him. i have alot of friends from all differnt social groups. makes partys really easy cuz im friends with everyone. and alot of people play eminiem

i know the whole rap industry is huge money making thing and is super capitalist. im not really getting into that right now though. im just talking more about good rap flow and the lyrics n shit.

I dont mind hearing it every once in a while.
It bothers me that music involving no kind
of intruments or talent gets so much damn
publicity. Its like real instruments dont matter
    to people anymore.

There are many very talented rappers who have nothing to do with the money making and praising side of that style. It's all about speech and speech patterns and the music is secondary, also the trend of no instruments is definitely changing. I've been a punk since 1977 but have always enjoyed underground rap because it is relevant and political. Was a big fan of Gangstarr's style of flow and was very saddened by the death of DJ Guru just a few days ago to cancer.

Yeah. I wasnt really targeting ALL rap. Im mainly speaking
of hollywood rappers who have lyrics written for them, and
    beats made for them.

I like some rap, like NWA, Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight", I love Ice-T, Public Enemy was cool shit. I liked Adam and the Ants song "Ant Rap", DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince was cool, Run DMC was bad ass.... I like older rap, most of the newer mainstream stuff is a load of shit, but there are some great DIY indy rappers out there, and even some good anarcho-rap.

I used to like some of the older more commercial stuff like Young MC, Sir Mixalot, Busta Rhymes, De La Soul but I must admit that I haven't listened to it for ages. I don't like the modern stuff. I don't like Eminem but there appears to be a lot of effort put into the lyrics of some of his songs, however, many are just crass and crude and appear to be written for shock value.

I like hip-hop a lot. Michael Franti's got some great beats and has some very good things to say. Dead Prez are a little more 'mainstream' sounding, but if you listen to what he's saying it's very gritty and real. The Roots, The Coup, Paris, Atmosphere, Wu Tang, all good stuff. The older stuff like NWA, Public Enemy and Ice-T get some frequent spins around my place, too. As a musician I try not to limit myself in what I take influence and inspiration from, you never know when or where you might find something that sets off a spark.

rap... not a fan. too much of it sounds the same to me. There is a candian rapper named K-OS that i kind of like. Also old school stuff like NWA and Public enemy is cool in small doeses. New school rap gives me a headache.

yeah immortal technique is great, but i dont agree on his vegetarianism/veganism views. Some of his lyrics also degrade woman.

I always hate to generalize, but I hate mainstream rap so much. I feel like they're so out of touch with their audience, they're singing about how shiny their grill is...too bougy for me.

Underground rap is a whole different story. Have you guys heard of Slam Poetry? It's essentially a contest of original poetry, what I like about it, is that it is very political and takes on all kinds of current social and economic issues. For me, slam poetry is punk rock without the music. I feel like underground rap is similar, because it also touches on current issues that a majority of its listeners understand. I think that bougy mainstream rap is really about forgetting your problems and floating off to a fantasy world of big screen TVs and diamond grills, but underground rap is grounds you and forces you to think about what's going on around you.

Rap is definitely a very misunderstood genre, and something that has always bothered me, is punks who generalize, segregate and stereotype rap music. I find this attitude incredibly elitist, and hypocritical, coming from people who want to eliminate class stratification.

I love pre-gangsta stuff, spesh PE, Run DMC etc. "Fight The Power!"

Beastie boys are awesome, Eminem is underrated, The Streets (Mike Skinner) has some of the most incredible and thought provoking songs. The whole "real instruments" thing is kind of a null statement. Considering very few things are recorded on expensive ostentatious analog equipment these days due to DIY studios and computer software taking over, wee're all listening to 1's and zeros anyway.

Not a preferred genre, but I like some. I love Rapture, Adam Ant's Ant Rap, BAD are fucking awesome, the Transplants are alright. As for straight up rap and hip hop I like Immortal Technique, Public Enemy, Easy E, NWA, Ice T, Body Count, and Fun Da Mental.
