An extremely disturbing story but what a strong woman to be able to write about her terrible ordeal only two weeks after it occurred.

People get raped all the time in what people would call a first world country and most of the time it goes unreported. It's difficult to imagine how often this happens in impoverished areas where support and care for rape victims is very difficult to come across and sometimes there isn't any at all.
By talking about it in such a blunt manner so soon after, she may help other women (and men) come forth about what has happened to them and for people to get more involved in caring for victims of sexual crimes and helping find means of prevention.

 

I knew a woman that was raped and it took almost five years for her to talk about it openly. She said that there were a vast amount of emotions that she went through. Anger and denial but believe it or not her biggest emotion was guilt, that in some way she had contibuted to the cause of her being raped. Another was contempt for men and society, but also contempt for the attitude from many of those involved with the reporting/prosecution etc. there was always an air of 'you must have done something' that is dress provocatively, asked for it etc. This, I believe is why so many crimes of this nature go unreported.

 

No there is no difference. Rape is dispicable. I was merely commenting on how strong the woman was to go into print two weeks after the ordeal compared with one that took five years to open up. That fact that the woman was a human rights activist makes no difference and it is sad that she was attacked by those she was tring to assist.

She's a strong woman, it's great to see that she don't give in to hatred.

 

There's more bad than good, it would seem. Rape is disgusting, and yeah, it barely ever gets covered in the first world, where money is more important than anything, and money is always a factor when it comes down to crimes, if you've got money, you get away with it. Like rape, for example, Ben Roethlisberger, the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, pretty much got away with rape because he had money. They said they didn't have enough evidence, but two girls from two states reported that he had raped them, and the one of the police officers told one of them (not sure which one) that it was almost pointless to file a report against him because he was extremely wealthy. Yeah, that was kinda halfway off topic, but still.

 

To adopt that kind of attitude does nothing but discourage further dialogue. You have to remember, you're a part of this human race, and you'll die along with the rest of us. This woman is a strong example of how to take a horrible situation and turn it into something incredibly positive. I admire and respect her strength in talking so openly about her ordeal in order to encourage more conscious movements for women's rights and rape survivors' support - not just in Haiti, but around the world and more specifically in our own communities. While rape itself is a disgusting thing, the positive things that have come out of the situation are what we must focus on, because just cursing the entire human race to hell doesn't solve anything.

 

It's funny, I was sexually assaulted twice by adult men as a child (aged 10 and 12). I was not raped, and my experiences were not that prolonged or horiffic. But still, I know a bit about what that kind of humiliation and fear is like. But I feel more sorry for the two men who did it than I do angry. More than anything else, I remember the fear in their eyes, even more than their rock hard errections pressing against my skin. Since I can remember, I've felt that such people are far more the footsoldiers of the brutal patriachy most of us live under than the beneficiaries. The soldier is taught to glorify combat by the general, but when doing it he is so scared he shits down his legs. The same is true, in a way, of many rapists and sex offenders. This is not to diminish the horror of what goes on, but to enhance it. My contention is not that there is nothing wrong with rape or sexual abuse, but that their is something so fundementally wrong with it that is takes the dissection of our entire culture to come to terms with, not the sapegoating of a few weak and frightened men who have cornered and groped kids, like I was.

But what about all the young kids that didn't want it, and didn't know what to want. Were basically taken advantage of? That's rape to me.
