i dont think a band is punk just because they used to play with filth. they are pop trash selling watered down poser punk bullshit to high school kids. mother fuck green day. no disrespect to those who enjoy their music though. i listen to a great deal of music most punks would laugh at. second empire justice by blitz is amazing. and so is a flock of seagulls. yeah thats right i went there.

    my thoughts exactly.

green day's early shit was mediocre at best, but when they released American Idiot and got millions of teens to say "fuck america" for all the wrong reasons they sold out. the music sounds different, the message is different, and i don't take a band who goes on MTV and preaches "fuck america" seriously. come on people... i can't believe this thread is on here. green day are nothing more but a pawn for the capitalist whore.

That's what I thought. It sounds like there's a lot of that going around.

Incidentally, I might take the opinions expressed herein a tad more seriously if it wasn't pretty clear a significant portion of the respondants have no idea what punk rock is.

Unfortunately, I'm not smarter than everyone, just a number of people in this thread. At the very least, in terms of the subject at hand. Anybody who had a solid grasp of punk rock wouldn't say a lot of the stupid things that have been said. I would think by definition someone who doesn't understand what punk is would be unqualified to make the determination as to what is or isn't punk.

It isn't like the melting point of Cobalt (Which according to Google is 1,768 Kelvins, FYI.), but that doesn't mean it can't be defined, and understood. Understanding punk shouldn't be any different from understanding the enlightenment, postmodernism, expressionism, etc. In fact, punk should be much easier to understand. The word has a meaning.

I admit I got into punk from them, but looking back now I was a damn pop-punk-emo-shit... But I evolved.

I'd like to see Billy Joe pass an American Idiot concert without crying mid-song (When September Ends). Seriously though, they're too damn emotional like their songs, especially the 21 Guns video.

If you consider punk as having millions of dollars, black eyeshadow, black messed up hair, and being mainstream then I feel sorry for you.

The images that are about to follow this are totally punk rock, you have been warned:

Oh and them on Broadway? -.- They are already soft, just listen to their songs especially on the last two albums. Green Day is your typical college rock band singing about making millions, being on TV, getting high, and whatnot.

Yes, let's have all punk bands be emotionless automatons. :p
