I think porn has this effect on the mainstream viewer too. Like what we see in regular movies, it will affect fantasies and expectations. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Where I do think it may be detrimental is among young folk for many of whom it's their only form of sex education. And they watch it so young. Some years back I remember a female stand up comic making a joke, "Do you do anal on a first date?" It was funny because it was outrageous. Unthinkable then. Nowdays I think it may well be part of many young men's expectations, and many young women may well feel that it is a 'normal' part of sex. On the other hand... maybe it is... :lmao:

One thing about the porn industry is that, like in many areas of entertainment, there is a drive to do something new, something outrageous, to keep pushing the envelope, so what was a bit extreme yesterday is the norm today, and that then feeds into what the rest of us actually expect and do.

Until it's under their own will and until none is maltreat, exploited and abused - it's ok. So I support everyone who said that It's ok until children and animals aren't involved, because in 99% of the occasions they are being abused and/or manipulated. I must add that the porn on the internet is free for all and something must be done about that.

There's nothing wrong with pornography as an art itself, but the porn culture and industry is sickening.

Nope, It was just an opinion. Do you want to say that the kids and animals are not being abused, or manipulated? I don't know other way for a child to agree on a sex with an adult plus being exposed on the Internet, or TV.

Kids and animals are abused...yes. Is that wrong? Yes.

    But...

How much of that really makes up all the porn out there online or at the shops?

    Come on!

Exactly! Most porn is just two people having sex consensually, if they're just acting, who the hell cares?

I’m just after reading everybody’s posts here and I have a few points to make...

“I find it interesting how some feminists will crap on about the exploitation of women in porn and prostitution but forget about....Gay porn and male prostitutes...of course we dont exist in their line of fire at all.”

Okay firstly, I appreciate the fact that you did say “some feminists”, but like everybody, including anarchists, “some feminists" are assholes that does not mean that the point of women being exploited in porn is not a good one. By the way, do you know that male prostitutes tend to cater for MEN. As does most lesbian porn.

“I would class myself as a Pro-Sex/Sex Positive Feminist.”

The term “sex-positive/ Pro-Sex feminist” is a misnomer. It implies that the anti-porn feminists are “sex-negative” or “Anti-Sex”. Which is completely ridiculous! I’m sex-positive and completely pro-sex but I am anti-porn (mainstream porn). I also cannot think of any radical feminist (or anybody at all) who is “sex-negative”. (hehe actually, the Catholic Church is a very good example)

“If you think that "consent means nothing" as a result of people being brainwashed by whatever bullshit from the rest of society then would that make all sex (penetrative and non-penetrative) tantamount to rape?”

I wouldn’t think anything as extreme as “consent means nothing”, however, you have to admit that in a world where women are influenced and conditioned to treat themselves as objects and men are conditioned to treat them likewise, that consent is at the very least sometimes a very grey area. I have heard of cases where porn-stars are made do things they really don’t want to do, and it’s just seen as a “job hazard”. If you are told you have to fuck 2 guys at the same time, or you’re not getting paid, many women will just go with it. You can hardly call that consent??
I think, the fact that so many women enjoy working as porn-stars is just an indicator of how messed up our society is. That so many women have come to embrace their repression.
Also so many people here use the argument, that because “SOME” people enjoy sex-work that that means it’s automatically okay. That’s not an argument, well it is (just a very bad one) and it only serves as a distraction from the bigger issue. I am sure some children enjoy working in sweat-shops, that does not mean we should be supporting sweat-shops. I know people who enjoy working in McDonalds, does that mean McDonalds is great???
Which leads me nicely on to (I’m sorry if I offend) the most ridiculous thing I have read on this thread :

“If it wasn't for the clients, Sex Workers would not be able to make a living from doing what we do.”

HOW IS THIS AN ARGUMENT! If it wasn’t for McDonalds my friends would be unemployed….yes let’s all support McDonalds now. Big thank you to McDonalds. Big thank you to sweat-shops. I’m not sure if you know this but…people work for the government, and if it wasn’t for the government…..those people would be unemployed. We couldn't possibly be anti-government knowing this. You know come to think of it, I would be so upset if cops lost their jobs…. :ecouteurs:

One more point, if it wasn’t for patriarchy (and capitalism) I would bet that so many women (or men) wouldn’t even consider selling their body.

I could say an awful lot more, but i'm frickin wrecked and have already written an essay, but feel free to comment....
(Could somebody please tell me also how to quote people, i had to do it the old "copy and paste" way...)

May i raise the argument that "sexual liberation" has had a reverse effect in which girls are embracing there place under men in a sense rather than taking control of there sex lives? If you watch a porn video you will see that the women is almost always taking a submissive role unless of course its a femdom video in which the goal is to have a dominant women. Shouldnt we be trying to take away the roles of domination and submision rather than trying to "empower" a differant sex? Just food for thought i dont stand for or against porn being that it is a personal choice and frankly none of my business if one chooses to do it. Then again it is none of my business if someone chooses to work in a sweatshop but i still would like to see all of them burned to the ground.

You know, when I read "I'm just after..." I automatically checked your location to verify that you're, indeed, Irish. I just love that construction :D

Actually, I see your point here. I walked into your post being staunchly pro-porn, but this part in particular made me think. You know, there's this whole movement in the gay porn industry, of having actors that are "gay for pay?" Essentially, poor straight guys are exploited and forced to engage in gay sex, despite how uncomfortable they are with the though, just because they really need some money.

Then that got me thinking about the people who "like" their work. I have a sneaking suspicion that they like getting paid lots and lots of money, not that they actually enjoy engaging in sexual intercourse on camera. The porn industry is very exploitative, it frequently draws on the lowest parts of society to work in it. No, I shouldn't just say the porn industry, it's the WHOLE sex industry. I know in America, people are forced into essentially selling their bodies because they're just that desperate for money. And I think that the industry knows that this happens, and uses the more desperate actors to film things that they're very uncomfortable with. And do they really have any room to complain? If they complain, their employers essentially just need to flash some money at them, and they'll shut their mouths. I suppose that's the whole idea of forced consent. If you don't want to film this scene, then I'll just take my $800 back and you can be on your merry way...

Haha, I came to the same conclusion, about five seconds ago!

In the top right hand corner of each post, there's a little graphic that says "QUOTE," you can click that to quote their whole post, otherwise you can just type the <quote></quote> tags (change the <> to []) around the bit you want and delete the rest.

Lol is "i'm just after" an Irish thing???? It sounds perfectly fine to me (possibly only because I'm Irish!) Oh and your name!! "I luv eire"....why?!!!

And that's an interesting note on the "gay" porn stars, I didn't know about that but to be perfectly honest I'm not mildly surprised.
I also really did want to emphasise (not sure if I did it well enough), that being anti-PORN does not in any way equate to being anti-SEX. It is something that really irritates me when pro-porn advocates call themselves "sex positive " or "pro-sex", thus implying the opposition are completely prudish puritans.

Also thanx so much for letting me in on how to do quotations. (It seems very complicated, but I'll give it a go next time!) :D

Well I know for fact anti-porn doesn't mean anti-sex. Porn industry damages society; everyone, men, women, children.

I hate when people use the nature "argument". There is NO such thing as "human nature", nevermind what's in men's nature or women's. Every person is different, regardless of what's in between their legs. I find it tends to be people that are trying to justify their own behaviour that use the "nature" argument.
Just because you yourself want to watch porn and aren't "ashamed of it", don't assume that other people of the same sex do too.
Some people think patriarchy affects only women. Not true. Both sexes are affected. Your comment is a clear example of how it does so. I will rephrase what you said : "Any men out there who aren't into porn....YE ARE NOT NATURAL."

To sum it up, as i recently read...."Men are sexual. Men are not sexual. Women are sexual. Women are not sexual." ALL PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT!

Also, when you said "feminists will hate" you, it implied that you yourself are not a feminist, is that true??? (I'm just curious)
