NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. punk rock band "Green Day" may be debuting their new musical on mainstream Broadway this week, but the trio says they aren't turning soft but following a natural progression from their 2004 album "American Idiot."

The band's new musical, which carries the same name and songs from that blockbuster Grammy-winning album, opens on Broadway on Tuesday evening.

"This is not 'Oklahoma' -- it's 'American Idiot'," singer Billie Joe Armstrong told Reuters in an interview. "It's live and right in your face, flesh and blood."

Critical notices are due out Wednesday. Previews have drawn a younger audience than typical Broadway previews, but the show is still a far cry from the raucous crowd-surfing of their early concerts.

The show follows the lives of three disaffected, post-9/11 youth and features sex, drugs and the ravages of war. It includes all the songs from "American Idiot," some hits from their 20O9 album "21st Century Breakdown" such as the single "Know Your Enemy," and a few new songs.

    THE CLASH ON BROADWAY?

Armstrong said the musical was simply the aftermath of "an ambitious record" and reflected the way it was written "as a play or rock opera or whatever you want to call it."

"It made us more ambitious musicians, and strange opportunities and strange unpredictable things start to come your way," he said. "You have to challenge your fans. Otherwise it would just be boring, and they have to expect it and expect the unexpected, especially with us."

But what would punk's innovators like the Ramones or The Clash think?

"I think they would have loved it. The Clash on Broadway, hello?" bassist Mike Dirnt said while the whole band laughed. "They challenged themselves to the same degree ... who knows, but if I had to imagine, I would think they would love it."

Dirnt added more seriously: "The greatest thing you do for your fans is to keep forging ahead and following where your music takes you."

After the musical, that journey takes the band to the June 8 release of the video game "Green Day: Rock Band," by MTV Games and Harmonix.

"A lot of brick and mortar record stores are just gone, you can probably buy video games in more stories in American than you can records," said Dirnt. "You can either embrace it or be afraid of it."

And the band is touring the United States after a European tour in mid-year, with Joan Jett and Courtney Love opening the concerts.

"It's going to be a woman-dominated show, so I will be bringing out my dress," quipped Armstrong.

Do you think there going soft?

None of what Green Day have made for years have been punk. Actually, i think they only made like 1 or 2 punk records, the rest has always been a little to poppy for most people in the punk scene.

That said, i like Green Day. I didn't like 21 century breakdown at all, but i liked American Idiot. It was a well-made pop-record, and in my eyes, one of the best pop-rock records to come out in a long time. It captured a young generations frustrations and problems in that period right after 9/11, and it was catchy and good melodies. Far from punk, and commercial as hell, but well made.

They stick to their balls, though.
They always have. They may have gone with the big record label and shit, but it seems to be just so their music and opinions can reach a wider audience.
Sadly, the youth of today doesn't QUITE get it, but at least they're trying.

I don't think they're going soft. I'm not so hot on their music, but they're a cool enough band.
And occassionally I listen to Minority, because it got me through my dropping out of highschool things, so it kind of has sentimental value.
But again, I'm not really so hot on their music.

Broadway, on the other hand... That shit I love.
Guilty pleasure, what can I say?
It would be hypocritical for me to say that Broadway makes them soft, considering I know all the songs from Rent by heart.

Actually, if you listen to the stuff Discharge released from 1983 to 1985, "Grave New World" isn't THAT far fetched.

I was always a fan of Green Day 1. because they were, whether i like it or not, the first time I got into Punk and 2. Because, sold-put or not, their music really gets me.
I know there not Punk at all but I don't care about that

As for the musical...everyone saw it coming but I have my doubts about it...I have a feeling its really shit...

I really don't care about what's punk. Genre boundaries don't actually mean anything, and there's good music in almost any style despite the label attached by businesses and elitists on the internet. Green Day had some good catchy albums in the 90s that I occasionally listened to, but was never a real fan or anything. I wouldn't see them on Broadway though.

Meh, I don't really care to be honest. If you like them, like them. Who cares if a band is punk rock or not. The only thing I really hate about Green DAy is not the band themselves, it is some of the fans. Multiple times I have had people come up to me and go, 'oh you are into punk rock? Awesome! I am such a punk rocker I listen to Green Day. Some people don't get me cause I am a punk but I don't give a shit!

Me: 'Oh cool, what other punk bands are you into?'

Them: 'Umm.. I don't know what are your favourites?'

I know it shouldn't get to me, but for some reason those conversations make me go.......what?.. You may think I am bullshitting but I have had that a fair few times believe it or not. The worst one I had was when a girl kept telling me how punk she was because she had purple streaks in her hair and she listened to, wait for it, The Veronica's! I am sure many of the Australian members here will recognize that name. I don't know if they went international...

I don't care what bands you like, I just get slightly irritated when people come up to me an explain how punk they are for listening to bands that push that label or not even be anywhere near the genre label. Incoming flaming! *puts on flame resistant suit*

Agreed. Ever since Green Day's first album they've been singing about high school break-ups and getting high. Yeah, that's real punk alright.
I think they should go on tour with Simple Plan and maybe Good Charlotte. Punk show of the century right there.
