You're probably right, but why accept it? Honestly, I think excising the overt use of homophobic, racist and sexist slurs from a small, DIY punk scene is completely winnable. But even if it wasn't, I'd still say something if only to let others who are feeling targeted know that they have at least one ally in the room.

What conclusions am I leaping to here? I don't particularly care whether the guys in Total Wreck are avowed bigots or just garden variety overcompensaters. All I know is that they're throwing around a word that is strongly associated in a lot of people's lives with trauma and violence. If they're gonna do that publicly, then I'm gonna go after them publicly. Why the fuck not? What's the downside?

I didn't say I was offended, I said I was hurt. Why do you think I have no right to feel that way?

dwtcos, your situation sounds pretty fucked. :( It's probably not safe for you to be calling people out in that environment yet. It doesn't even sound like there's much salvageable there if open nazism is deemed praiseworthy but, if it matters to you, I say fight for it.

My advice would be to look for like-minded people, especially your age or younger, and have conversations with them about this. Yeah, you're young, but that makes you the future of this scene. Kids your age who are already this smart are destined to be role models. Start building up a crew that can transform things in a positive way. I wouldn't be surprised if that swastika-sporting dude had moments in his teens when he felt uncomfortable or scared or out of place. Unfortunately, he chose to be a follower. Look at him as a lesson in what not to become.

Ha ha ha, me neither, man. I feel like such a de facto punk. I didn't ask for this shit, punk rock chose me. (H)

    Ugh, so not cool.
Some people don't realize how hurtful those words can be. Even if you're not a homophobe, the words are rooted in homophobia and just create an environment of hate. Because of the roots of the words, using them makes minorities feel universally hated due to the very fact that the word exists and is being used casually.
Y'know, I wish I could not be so sensitive, but it's hard to feel not only out of place everywhere I go, but on top of that feel hated by everyone around me. NOT COOL.
And of course if you call people out on it, they get embarassed, and try to hide it with defensiveness, because they won't admit that it was maybe a bit wrong, and that they're embarassed. And so they'll just keep doing it to prove whatever point they use to defend themselves. Lovely.

I would never support a band that practiced such hateful speech.
Not my basket of muffins at all.

Yeah, and it's about pissing people off, and not giving a shit, and sex, drugs, and violence.

I think those are misconceptions about punks. If we act like dick heads, and piss people off, and say innappropriate things that make people feel alienated, they're going to generalize and stereotype us, and we're never going to get anything done.
As an anarcho-punk, a group that is frequently looked down on, the most radical thing you can do is act like a respectful, educated person. That's what's going to get out voices heard. Not being innappropriate, and pissing people off, and encouraging hate.

"Punk isn't meant to be appropriate."

Nobody gets to say what punk is meant or isn't meant to be, and obviously nobody is perfect and never says anything that is not 'PC', but if you continously use the term 'Fag' or 'Faggot' in a deragotory fashion and don't give a fuck who's feelings you hurt because your 'So Punk' then you deserve everything you got coming to you....and dont be surprised when a militant gay punk with a third degree black belt in martial arts hands you your ass....just sayin'

Axehandle, if you think this is about people getting "offended" over a "word we don't like," then you missed the point. It's simple.

early examples of homophobia in punk rock music.

"new york's alright if your a homosexual" - fear

""your pants are too tight, you fucking homo, you suck, mr. buttfuck, you don't belong here, no way, you fucking gay, i'm not a loser"- Descendants

"No way, can not live in a world this gay" - Adolescents

"that's like calling a homosexual a stupid faggot" - Guttermouth

"Same-sex marriage in a state where they don’t care
Murder is wrong but the jail time’s not fair" - mxpx

"ya poor little faggot, you're sealed with a kiss" - sex pistols

"you scumbag you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot"- the pogues

thats just off the top of my head, im sure theres far more.

some one sees what im saying. and even the word faggot. maybe he was callign you all bundles of wood for not moving around during his songs hahahah.

in my post i was not supporting homophobia or any discriminaton. but liek some times is it really worth it to get all huffy puffy over what one guy says? was he directing the slur to a person out of the crowed cuz then it would not be so bad. but the job of a singer is to egt the crowd all hyped up. ghood way it to make people angry at him?

its not liek i dont understand that if your gay you might take it to offence. ya i get it people call you down all the time. but these little slurs are just childish and to get angry at them. if just as childish in my veiw sorry. call my dumb or what ever you want. i think its just not a big deal. faggot does not even mean anythign about gay peopel to start with. you old dirty bundle of wood!

ill have to finish this post another time sorry i gotta go to work

Why should we care about the public's generalizations? Punk is not the appropriate medium in which to get productive things done outside of our subculture, it's only a gateway.

It's "you suck, let's butt fuck" and it was actually calling tough guy punx (and non punx) out for their homophobic behaviour. the context of the song is that's the kind of shit he cops for being punk, and that it's bullshit. The othr examples very valid though.

There's also another oft misrepresented one by Screeching Weazel "I wanna be a homosexual"

The whole song could be interpreted as extremely homophobic but it's calling out tough guy straight edge jocks for calling all the non-edgers "gay" and "Faggot"

Admittedly the language in both songs is a little crude and a touch offensive but the heart is in the right place. and crude and confronting is kinda the punk way is it not?? though not usually at the expense of minorities but these are old songs from less enlightened times.

I think we have plenty of homophobes right here among us, I would be willing to bet that many here don't associate with anyone gay let alone have gay friends because if you did you wouldn't defend this type of ignorance. :/

Fag, faggot are not terms you should use guys, there are many expressions and words we use that aren'tthe good one to qualify an homosexual. As the same title than "bitch" ,. personnally I'd rather say homosexual then fag or other shit like that. Thik about it

another one i just remembered "I'll take you home to meet mom and dad, and they'll be so glad, they won't think they're boy is a fag" -circle jerks.

The screeching weasel song i have always interpreted as being tongue in cheek, which is why i didn't mention it, the same with the dead milkmen song about gay aliens taking over the world.

As far as the descendants song, it's a matter of interpretation. I have always seen it as being homophobic. How calling someone a "fucking homo" is not an anti gay slur, i can not understand. Even if it is calling out a jock, it is still comparing them to gays as being lesser then regular people, and it is bullshit. Too bad Pansy Division wasn't around at that time :)

Actually it does. Gay people used to be burned at the stake, so it became a common derogatory term to call them a bundle of stick meant for burning.
So basically, using the word fag, or faggot is like saying "You're natural inclination to be attracted to people of the same sex disgusts me, and you should be burned alive for it."
Like I said, it's rooted in homophobia, and creates an unsafe environment, even if not said in a hateful way, because it makes some gay people feel like the hate is so common, and universal, that it has become a socially acceptable thing to say.
I wouldn't call that being oversensitive. Especially considering the amount of gay bashing that goes on nowadays.

Is the word fag ever used appropriately?

I dunno, i think that shit like that is best used only with friends who are also comfortable with it.
I mean, is being called gay when you ARE gay really offensive?

I call my dog a fag, but thats cuz i love her
It's a kind of term of endearment

My vocabulary is like licking a toilet seat,
but i would never use any words in an anti gay sense.

    Maybe i'm just Desensitized...
