MOSCOW — The plane crash that killed Polish President Lech Kaczynski on Saturday gutted a nation's leadership and silenced some of the most potent human symbols of Poland's tragic and tumultuous history.

It was, literally, a nation colliding with its past: The plane ran aground on a patch of earth near the remote Russian forest glade called Katyn, where more than 20,000 members of Poland's elite officer corps were executed and placed in unmarked graves by Soviet secret police in 1940.

In a bizarre twist, the crash happened at the moment Russia and Poland were beginning to come to terms with the Katyn massacre.

"It is a damned place," former President Aleksander Kwasniewski said. "It sends shivers down my spine."

Along with the president and his wife, the 97 dead included the army chief of staff, the head of the National Security Office, the national bank president, the deputy foreign minister, the deputy parliament speaker, the civil-rights commissioner and members of parliament.

Also aboard the plane were war veterans and surviving relatives of Poles killed by the Soviets. There was Ryszard Kaczorowski, 90, Poland's last "president-in-exile" during the Soviet years. And Anna Walentynowicz, 80, the shipyard worker whose dismissal sparked the Solidarity union protests that eventually led to the collapse of Polish communism.

And Kaczynski: a former Warsaw mayor imprisoned in the 1980s for his opposition to communism.

Damn, should I say most of the main witnesses are dead? It couldn't have been an accident.

Edit: Just talked to a Polish friend of mine about the event, he said:
"There was a damn fog + airport hadnt GPS (some small airport hell knows where)
They flied around the airport 4 times and when finally tried to land - crashed
This is the only known fact for now
    about fog."

Well, talked to my dad about it (since he is Polish), and he said it was a fair guy and most of Poland really liked him. He seemed to be very stubborn and conservative (if that's a word in english :p) though.

It's very hard to accept that all of Polands leaders were on the same doomed plane barreling into the fog. Not that any government is good for anyone but that area has been plagued throughout history by instability, foreign domination, hunger and any other thing that could happen. I have very good friends that are from Poland who grew up during soviet control. After the soviets brokedown, the collapse really put people in a bad way, no bread for the elderly sort of thing. They have made a fairly good recovery in light of the horrifying gradual lean towards a more capitalistic approach to join the world "market". I hope this disaster does not allow for warlords or one the many fascist (that I really dont understand) organizations to vie for power. Peace to the people of Poland!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's sad for the humans in that plane. The institutions, such as the military and such, and the homophobic stateleaders, i don't mind if they change, but i feel bad for these people and their families.

Also, i feel angry that this police prime-minister had forced the pilots to fly unsafely and against rules. It's sad, that his power cost him and so many others his life, but it might be very saying.

i don't understand people on this message board being sad about this. Yes the loss of human life is almost always sad, but he was a so-called leader, and name me one President of any country who isn't some power hungry greedy bastard. Anarchism is about getting rid of the government, not feeling sorry for them. Or am i wrong in thinking that?

You're right, seen from a Anarchist point of view, it's good that they are out of power - He was accused of misusing power, and he was a homophobe as far as i know.
But i personally, as a human being and anarchist, see no victory in this. It's not like there aren't more of them out there ready to take the seat, and i feel bad for people dying - them and their families. We don't win any war on this, it's just a waste of human lives. That he shouldn't be president, and that i dislike the military is true, but it's not the way. We don't show any resistance on this.

Katyn. After Soviet invasion of East Poland in 1939, 20,000 POW (officers) were executed at Katyn. Germans discovered mass graves, at time Soviets denied it and said it was Nazi propaganda. They admitted it decades later, made public apology, etc. The plane was on the way to Katyn for 70th memorial of the massacre, crashed while trying to land.

Yeah, I heard about this, definitely seems to be a setup of some sort from the reports. And yeah, sure, cool, this guy is out of power now, but if it was a setup, they're not just gonna let poland go without a leader. Russia will probably end up taking it over sometime in the future or something.
