are you talking books or film?

    film:

THX 1138 by george lucas literally shits all over star wars, but watch the old version without the CGI (same as stars wars i guess.)

    book:

the dispossessed by ursula leguin. if you're an anarchist and into sci-fi i seriously can't take you seriously until you've seriously read this. but then again, i'm not an anarchist, or particularly into sci-fi, so what do i know?

haha i just watched the first star trek movie, and i hated it
i dont like when they try to seriously act

I like the original series that is full of horrible acting and bad production values
its a lot of fun to watch. other than that, Futurama is the best Sci-fi.

THX 1138 did have Robert Duvall, so it's not like it was atotally obscure film. should be easily findable.

Been watching a few episodes of The Twilight Zone today, gotta say it's the best sci-fi, or anything really, ever! It's just on a completely different level then anything done today. The first episodes was aired in 1959...

twilight zone is the shit. even all these years later it is still original and gripping, amazing character development crammed into 30 mins, and lots of great memorable characters and scenes, from talky tina to the gremlin on the airplane to the how to serve man aliens... wow :)

Also I recommend checking out Alfred Hitchcock Presents, kinda like the twilight zone but without the supernatural elements, all about man's greed and evilness towards one another.

Imagine if you will...an announcer you can barely understand, he refers to a [mutters], but you're not quite sure what he said. He seems to be eating something, or perhaps he's a little drunk. It's remotely possible that he just said something about the Twilight Zone

silly name or not, Hitchcock was a brilliant master of suspense, and the tv show, which has doen;t seem to have the same legacy as twilight zone or outer limits is still a notch above most of what pollutes the cathode rays today

I like that ENT brings back familiar stuff from the classic series, Andorians, etc., but first of all I have problems with Scott Bakula as I was really into Quantum Leap and it just seemed like bad form to cast the lead from another huge science fiction franchise. I also had trouble with the look, because it was trying to be retro, but with cutting-edge special effects, plus I'm sorta hostile to the idea of prequels in general. DS9 is an acquired taste, but it definitely grew on me. It was unique in that it had long story arks. It also had a much darker tone. I'd say give it anotyher chance. It has it's flaws, but it's definitely worth watching a second time at least. Plus, Terry Farrell is a godess.

DS9 is great, the last 2 or 3 seasons is all about war. The episode showing what captain sisko did to get the romulans involved is one of the greatest trek episodes ever.

I saw that movie and thought it was terrible, haha. But then I think Star Wars is pretty terrible too.

Anyone seen Moon? Finally watched that last week, it's really good. Another sci-fi film I'd recommend is The Man from Earth, it's just set at this one guy's house but the script is amazing, really really interesting.

Agreed, but my burning adolescent crush was on Major Kira.

I like that Sisko starts out the series as kind of a shitty commander who's way out of his element and has to defer to his senior officers a lot. Some of the characters on that show were refreshingly complicated.

Just saw Iron Man 2. I'd give it a three-out-of-four stars. It was pretty good, makes me want to see the first one, again. Now I can't fucking wait for "Thor." If you see it stick around after the credits for the teaser.

I'd agree on the 3/4 stars. It seemed like the typical popcorn movie. But I wasn't having popcorn because of this lovely conversation with the proprietor of snacks:
Me: Hey I've heard that sometimes before you add extra butter to movie-theater popcorn it is vegan, is this the case with your popcorn?
Evil teenage employee: Umm its just popped corn.
Me: I know, but its yellow, so there is clearly some sort of seasoning.
Evil teenage employee: Are you new to veganism?
Me: Not really, just new to movie theaters.
Evil teenage employee: Its just popped corn as far as I know.
    Me: Your useless.
    *walk away*
I hope I lowered her opinion of vegan people :D
Oh and I went to the movie with a Russian ladyfriend of mine and she was pointing out all the flaws and gibberish in the "Russian" that Mickey Rourke spoke, so that was pretty funny.

So glad people brought up Buffy/Angel on this thread, I love the whole story with the show Buffy that also leaks into Angel. In all honestly, I wish they could have just killed Dawn off. I hated her character so much, she made the show almost unbearable to watch for me haha.

Buffy after dawn was introduced went downhill very fast. The lowest point was probably Willow turning evil. Angel's fourth season was almost unwatchable due to his son Connor, but they saved the fifth season by getting rid of him and adding Spike.

I just started watching a show called SLIDERS from the mid 90's, about 4 people who are lost travelling through parallell universes trying to find the right Earth, and it is interesting, seeing a modern america where England won the revolutionary war, or communism spread due to america losing the korean war, or a world where a massive plague is killing everyone, etc. Entertaining stuff :)

In season four Buffy totally fell apart. However, the first three seasons were fucking awesome.
