I'm currently reading a highly debated swedish book about extremists, written by an extremist-hunting man that claims that the leftists and the nazis are very much alike. So you can easily see it's a book filled with bullshit.
Time and time again he explains how the autonomous left, anti fascist groups, comunists and anarchists are a bigger threat to todays society then what the nazis are.
He has gotten expert help in his writing from a woman that's been working a lot with reasearch on nazis, and therefor with some strange logic is supposed to be some kind of an expert on the left side movements. According to her there are differnt reasons to why different people become extremists. Now according to her and the writer's idea of what an extremist is we all definately are, since that to them means having more extreme oppinions then the mainstream politicians.
These reasons why different people become extermists are what i find most wacky in this book. Nazis become such because they have bad or absent fatherfigures. This mostly goes for the male nazis. The female nazis become such because they fall in love with boys with extreme right political ideas and then they can't do nothing but join.
The extremists on the left side are teenage boys from middle class or upper middle class very functional and loving families, with a need to revolt against their families. This is a phase that in most cases will soon pass. The girls join these groups for the same reasons that they might join the nazis; boyfriends and no mind of their own.
In some cases the extreme leftists don't pass through their phases, some stay in these groups up in their 20s. These often are very influencial on the younger recruites. Then there are the really dangerous ones, that are still convinced of these extreme ideas close up to their 30s.

So i couldn't help but, laughing a bit to myself, wonder how many here that are spoiled middle class boys and mindless girls :p

I for one, even though i'm a woman, have never had an anarchist boyfriend but, believe it or not, developed my ideas on my own! From a working class family, not spoiled. I am also getting close to that very dangerous group... I had no idea i was so dangerous!

Although I agree that the book is wrong, I must say that the part about (not necessarily anarchists nor even politically attached) middle and upper class teenagers is somewhat true when it comes to spoiled kids listening to metal to look cool and rebellious in front of their parents and friends, especially when it comes to "Satanism" which they know shit about, filling their backpacks and books with Satanic symbols, inverted crosses etc... And then they take an image of themselves in front of a mirror with their new I-Phone 3GS. It pisses me off.

Never met any Nazis, but trust me on this one: Christian and Muslim extremists are far worse.

I'm a middle class teenager and certainly consider myself spoiled. But I don't see my ideals as revolt against my family at all. I love my family and am totally open with them about my thoughts and they love me for it. I live in a very liberal house that rewards creativity and all that "out of the box thinking" type of crap, and it just so happens that my dad thinks that my utopian ramblings are amazing! My mom was into punk rock as a youth as well (she even dated the lead singer of CA nardcore band Agression!). So i guess in some ways I fit that extremist mold and in others I don't. Meh :p

dwtcos, you (and i'll give everyone on this site the benefit of the doubt on this) are the exception to the rule. People go into their mid twenties with this unnecessary angst against their families (and why some may have good reason, i know a lot who don't). And either they "revolt" just as a form of shock value or they are just very susceptible and will follow any one.
    and thank you punkmar :)

Well the only issues I have with my father is because of our different religious and political views.

Well thanks, I guess I am :D . I've simply never understood people who have caring families revolting against there parents...Its just so bratty. And I hate it when im pigeonholed as being a "rebel" for being an anarchist. I don't just want to burn old buildings. I want to help build new ones :)

So we've got the heterosexual girls, and the boys covered. So what about genderqueers and gays?

Funny, I don't fit any of those. And I certainly would never consider myself and extremist because I am an anarchist...
That could just be me, brainwashed by my own extremist ways.
Or maybe I just believe in true freedom...
Only the experts who wrote that book can tell us, I suppose.
Even if they were wrong about me needing to rebel.
Or... falling for a boy who did.

    Jeez...
Pigeonholing to the max, if you ask me.

while a large portion of what was said is total bullshit i do believe the far right and far left are very similar, i look at it as a circle on the far right you have fascism(total control, forced competition, laize faire politics, big business, etc.) and on the left you have communism (total control, forced "cooperation", greedy ruling class, starving underclass) in the middle of the cirle though you have anarchism on both side, government out of our lives and willing cooperation. Anarchism isnt extremist to me, its the middle path. Everything else is extremist. As for that book, id have it burned if i wasnt such an advocate for free speech. For a rich bastard Voltaire did have some awesome things to say "I disagree with every word you say but will defend to death your right to say it"

I also consider myself as Upper-middle class and spoiled,
yet I also don't get the point of revolting against parents, In fact,
I have really great conversations with my parents about anarchism!

Both of my parents used to be punks until far into their 20s,
They understand my way of thinking and that makes conversation a lot easier :)

the part about girls getting into anarchism and nazism only because they fall in love with a guy who thinks that way is really bullshit... that's like saying "the boys do the thinking of the girls"...
it indeed is right wing propaganda bullshit

"It's hard not to be a menace to society, when half the population is happy on their knees" - FFDP

    Anyway... fuck... got found out.
My cover has been blown and you all now know that I'm only 15 year old brat from an upper class family, spoiled to the max and having a bank account with more digits on the left hand side than I have fingers and all my ranting and rambling is just a very crooked way of getting attention.... again... fuck...
