Technically it was NEVER legal, but condoned, much like weed.
And it has ALWAYS created friction between the state (and its henchmen) and squatters. Just think of the squatter-riots in Amsterdam a few decades back.
Holland is very, very weird when it comes to law, as long as you break the law, but harm no one doing it, there is a chance they might condone it anyway, but will not legalize it, even though condoning has been going on for decades.

 

i thought the law has already gone through? and wernt basically all the local city councils opposed to it as well?

well. most bums dont really occupy abandoned houses. they just live under bridges.

 

Not all squatters are homeless and not all homeless people live in squats.

Occupying an abandoned building without the aid of a section 6 will give the owner and any authority figures the right to come in and forcefully evict the residence. The majority of people involved in squatting because of political ideology go about things in this way. Homeless people sleeping in empty buildings are less likely to.

 

we also squatted building that s was nothing than a wreck.among us was a construction worker/builder so we patched her up,fixed floor,put nylon on windows,painted walls.it s good to see something you ve done with your bare hands and your sweat.we were proud on job well done.

 

hmm i have only squatted a few times when i had no where to go. once i did it just cuz my friend had no where to go. it was middle of december and se got kicked out of her house. me..being i think it was 13. had huge crush on this chick so i stayed out the night with her.....it was fucking cold be we were able to get into some condos being built and we slept in a closet thing. we were discovered the next day by the workers and they got us hot coffee and donuts from tim hortons cuz they could see how cold we were. and we did not break or steal anything(other then half a pack of smokes) so they let us go with out calling the cops/

Well, that squatters have roofs above their heads which homeless people don't have...

Squatting, if done right as Persona-non-grata mensioned, is really a good thing:
1. if a property is empty for more than a year, it could be squatted, so owners try to prevent that by making sure it's not empty
2. when a property is (properly) squatted, it's squatters make sure they can live properly inside the building,
so they make sure it stays in a better shape than when it's left empty

 

What I have read that under Danish law is that: If a building has sat empty for a year, and you move into it (with out forcing entry), as long long as you have a chair, a table, and a bed somewhere in the building, it is yours. If the owner wants you out they have to go to court and prove that they have a plan for the building within a year.

From what I understand of the US squatting laws is, that if you find an abandoned building, and you can document that you have inhabited it for every day for a year, you can legally continue to stay there. The hard thing is trying to stay there for a year without getting kicked out. But also in the US a rich land owner can pay judges and authorties to side with them, to remove squatters.

and not all squatters just live in one place either, some squatters are nomadic, and have a newtwork of squats that they travel to and from.

The main difference between squatters, and homeless are situations, and individuals. Most squatters choose that as a life outside of society, where as most homeless either are not by choice, or are there because of bad choices in life (such as drugs or alcohol).

 

In UK you if you secure abandoned property (change locks) for 24hrs, you have legal possession. Owner then needs eviction order to get you out, which usually take over 6 months going through court. That's it I think, though there was a case of someone who squatted a place for over 10 years being given it recently.

As far as i know the only squatting protection in the us is a sort of grandfather law. If you occupy a building for a certain period of time, generally longer than a year, you can legally live in it. I believe these laws were put in place to protect people who had an agreement with the owner of the property which was not documented and the owner tryed to go against the agreement and throw them out. There a really funny part of Evasion where he talks about taking the library because there is a law that says if you occupy a building for more than 7 years you leagally own it and he had been sleeping in the broom closet on and off for years.

 

There's a similar rule in Holland actually. A bed, a chair and a table. If those are present there's a situation we call 'huisvrede' (peace of home, basically) and therefore it might not be yours, but if the police come in to try and evict you, you can actually ask them to leave 3 times and if they don't they're breaking the law themselves...
