in san diego there have been a lot of venues being used to exploit bands and fans. a promoter will do a very minimal amount of work and snake all the cash. each band typically is expected to sell 30 tickets at 10 dollars a pop with 6 local bands on the bill. usually these bands are of very different genres drawing very different crowds. this is not done to promote unity i assure you. in some cases the band must pay for any tickets they did not sell. the promoter has now made 1800 dollars in one night. this is the business model of a scam artist. there are likely people doing this in your town. if you are in a band or know people in bands please advise them not to cooperate with pay to play systems. promotion is easy and should be handled by the bands themselves, not crooked fucks who care more about their next cash fix then they do about common decency.

    Pay to play fucking sucks.
It's not only promoters and venue owners either. Even some Musicians have taken to this sorta system. Screwing over other musicians in the process.
A Friends band played a show with some shitty metal band. The drummer of which set-up said show. Giving each band who played tickets to sell at five bucks a pop. Then; when the scumbag saw how much money was rolling in. He decided to make it a battle of the bands at the last minute, winner takes all. His shitty Death Metal band of course won.
I've also been to shows at community centers and such. Where the headlining band takes all the dough. Not even paying other bands the coutesy of gas money for driving out to play.
    People suck.

Yep, every promoter in buffalo new york does that, noone with their right mind plays here. It sucks, but i understand this aspect very well. Dont ever play buffalo! Rochester (closest known "scene) is pretty good about shows, but buffalo, no fucking way.

Pay To Play should only be used for Venues for Arena Rock shows, or any of the Mainstream bill to be a privilege such as Warped Tour or Festivals. NOT bar shows or local Bands...

this is sad that there are people who leech off of kids in high school that just wanted to have their friends come see them fuck around on stage, or if they are really talented...

but heres a thought PROMOTE YOURSELF! DIY

back when i was in a band i was lucky that a member had rich parents, so his parents paid for all the tickets and we gave them out for free...though not a great solution for everyone

I run my venue in reverse of this, I pay the bands all of the money that we make at the door, because theyre the ones bringin the people in there, and I make a cut off my DVD/CD/Merch table/Bar.

Pay the fucking bands, not yourself.

Support the fucking scene instead of killing it.

Fuck asbury lanes, Fuck the stone pony, Fuck starland ballroom, fuck every single venue in NJ minus the brighton bar, SICA and lousyland.

Yeah, in Pittsburgh its like that with A LOT of promoters. It fucking sucks. I was actually thinking of starting up some kind of network of bands and venues who could book shows themselves and spread of wealth of the ticket sales or door sales. Idk how I'd go about doing that sorta thing though.
