I kinda like Negativland and Christian Death ain't too bad, but I dislike the Damned's excursion into 'goth'

Since I can't edit that post anymore: I also like some of Killing Joke, but I don't really know if you'd call that goth or not.

    Rathryn:
It's post-punk (later on they turned industrial rock), and post-punk is what goth is.

I'm DJ at a goth club, and my favorite music is post-punk and early industrial.

I like punk music too though

I thought goth was more akin to death rock like Alien Sex Fiend with influences from New Wave... oh well, learn something every day :)

    Rathryn:
Basicly, Goth is just an umbrella term for Post-Punk, Deathrock, Goth-Rock, Batcave, early Darkwave, Coldwave, Synth-Pop and such. Later on many clubs started playing New Wave, Electronica, EBM, Industrial, Electroclash, Dark-Electro and such stuff, and some like it and some dont. Personally i like most of it, as long as it isn't to rave like.

But to say Goth is post-punk is the easiest, since post-punk is in itself a pretty broad term used to describe all the genres coming out right after punk - Joy Division, Siouxsie, The Cure, Bauhaus, all that.

Goth has been slaughtered by the media though, everybody think it's metal now

ugh labels labels labels :p Some great bands and music from that scene, some that i like are the sisters of mercy, my life with the thrill kill kult, bauhaus, early NIN, there's also a lot of crap in that scene too, but if you sift through it there is some goodness, like all scenes really.

I like some industrial and goth, stuff like Godflesh and Bauhaus.

As for the difference between "goth" and "post-punk", to me goth is more macabre, whereas post-punk is more arty. The Fall, Swell Maps, and the Nightingales would be examples of post-punk, whereas the Banshees and Sisters of Mercy are examples of goth.

some bands work i'd call punk as in era wise, rather than sound, unless out therrre, as their were out there bands who weren't part of the scene as it were, punk did bring an alive energy though haha

yea i don't like sound of dance goth as it were, gimmie a 'goth' band without the happy mondays or satyricon, to quote casey kassem - reach for the stars while keeping ya feet on earth

I'm a huge fan of goth, deathrock, post-punk, etc music. The Cure are probably my favorite band bands ever, and SDC/Death Cult is close. Siousxie and the Banshees definitely need to be mentioned in this thread... It's good to see other punx into good gothic music. I'm not really educated on industrial, but Ministry, Pigface, and Godflesh are amazing.

no one has mentioned one of my favorites in this sort of gothy genre, so I will the jesus and mary chain... absolutely amazing band, have at one time been associated with different genres from punk and goth to industrial and pop... a band that is grossly underrated and i highly reccomend their first 2 albums, Psychocandy and Darklands to the uninitiated.

also an honorable mention for Dead Can Dance

joy division started as a punk band called warsaw. old sisters of mercy (some girls wander by mistake). tragic black has some good songs though it borders on sounding too street punk for me. the naughty zombies from spain have some good horror punk/goth songs. southern death cult--good one! i never thought id see dead can dance and anarcho together on one site. lovely community here.

Apart from the already mentioned, bands like Kommunity FK, 45 Grave, Children on Stun, Screaming Dead, New Days Delay, Alien Sex Fiend, Sex Gang Children, Faith and the Muse, Killing Joke, Christ vs. Warhol, etc. all have songs close to the punk roots.

I like the atmosphere of the music.

And yes, there is a difference between goth-rock and post-punk, as their is between industrial (Test Department), industrial metal (Ministry) and post industrial (Skinny Puppy)
    - But all of that doesn't matter, it have all become integrated parts of the goth scene. Just like there's a huge leap from the clash to exploited to guided cradle or nuclear death terror. All comes from punk, but most punk venues can play it all.
