2010 Football World Cup

I also love me Football but i also agree with the poster above, i don't know who is paying for the World Cup but the 2012 Olympics are being paid for by the people of London. We're meant to be getting affordable housing, better public transport and sports facilities out of it, but i i've got a sneaking suspicion the only real winners will be big business.

 

Issues of the World Cup as an event in and of itself aside, I love international football.

Italy (as a team) disgusts me. They shouldn't have won the last World Cup, they were AWFUL at the UEFA Cup, they take dives like no other and they sneak attack members of the other team (Game against the US in the last World Cup, for example)

My team is Sweden. I'm extremely disappointed by our failure to qualify but, I will cheer on Denmark despite the rivalry. Denmark has a very good team this year and I wish them the best.

 

Football / sport is almost as much a part of my life as punk and politics, and regularly cross over. I'm a part of The Easton Cowboys & Cowgirls Sports & Social Club. We've made strong links with other teams around the world who share our attitude ('Freedom Through Football') - members of the teams have played and partied in most of Europe as well as Mexico (accompanied by Banksy), the US, Palestine, Morocco and, most recently, Brazil. We've also had our own tournaments with teams from around the world turning up to return the favour (including loads of us fundraising to pay for a team from Diepkloof to come over for our Alternative World Cup in 1998, and doing something similar again for a great bunch of Lithuanians in 2007).

I guess what I'm trying to say is that punks and football / sport were made for each other and can lead to a whole lot of fun!

And while I've got my criticisms of the global business of football that are probably similar to the rest of you, I'm still gonna do my best to get out to SA for at least part of it. I've got a couple of friends in Cape Town I can stay with, so all I've got to do is save £600+ for the flight

I wanna see that one movie, Damned United. I remember reading about the coach and thought maybe it would be a good flick. Also, Green Street Hooligans (although elijah wood is a bad bad bad actor) was a pretty kick ass movie.

I agree about criticizing the events and all. Its good to be a fan and shit. But when your getting charged like 100 bucks to go see a team play. And then spend another 500 on merch. its ridiculous to me.

And what Ungovernable said, im a huge anti-olympic supporter, so i can go on and on and on about what these events being horrific but this thread isnt about that debate.

 

i just find pro sports in general to be a waste of money. Ive adopted a P.I.Y. mentality to pro sports (play it yourself!). I actually enjoy football (or as us ass-backwards americans call it, soccer) but id much rather play it then watch it

 

I also want to see The Damned United as Brian Clough was a very charismatic and took no shit from anyone. Funny enough i watched Green Street last night it's a terrible film but it's so bad it's good. Have you seen Football Factory or Cass and there's a new film called The Firm thats just come out, all about hooliganism and not one of them has Elijah Wood in them.

 

think we should just think about friendly compettiion and how we can use it rather than waste time argiuing for and against, sport can be our freind.
