The word "sellout" gets used so liberally it loses all meaning. It's just a pet peeve of mine.

Green Day are, or, rather were, an excellent band. 1,039/Smooth, Kerplunk, Dookie, and Nimrod were fantastic albums. Warning was so-so, and as far as I'm concerned the last two are unlistenable. It's really too bad.
It seems like you're misdirecting you're anger (A common condition in these parts.) I mean, Smash took off because it was a great record. They weren't manufactured by the industry, and they put out several indie albums, until the aforementioned personal dispute. It's just a shame that for any punk band today when they reach a certain level of success, that half their fan base will turn on them. Even staying on indie labels isn't enough to avoid being tagged a "sellout", anymore. Sad...

funny you say that on an anti capitalist website that you like major label bands that represent a movement which was at one time about being independent. They are sell outs, they wanted to expand their fan base, so they signed to a major label and had to do whatever the suits told them, and compromised their sound however the suits thought it would help them be marketable. that in my eyes is being a sell out. They may not have been manufactured by the industry, but they were more then happy to let the industry turn them into manufactured bubblegum crap. And smash is a horrible album, nothing good about it. except that it eventully ends.

and I think bands like them deserve to be labelled sellouts. punk is suposed to be a more socially conscious music, not a genre that should jump if you dangle a dollar bill in front of them

That has nothing to do with the bands themselves. I despise the staus quo as much as anybody, however, "popular" does not necessarily mean "bad." Halo, ice cream, and Shakespeare are enjoyed by billions of people,.....because they're all great. Offspring should not be suddenly despised because they put out an indie record that was miraculously popular. Also, this attitude seems very cliquey to me, very,...high school. I listen to any number of obscure bands but I'm under no obligation not to listen to anything else, just as I'm under no obligation to not listen to reggae, or hip hop, or folk.

This still doesn't justify you're assertion that they are 'talentless.' Moreover, this criticism is equally true of many of what seem to be the most popular bands on this site.

That's a pretty weak case that you're making. Hardly sufficient for a death sentence.

Mordam being co-owned by one of the editors of Maximmum RocknRoll, who put out material for Jello Biafra, Bikini Kill, the now-defunct Lookout!, etc. This is a ridiculous standard you are creating. Epitaph may be large for an indie, but compared to the reaj major labels, the ones that handle acts like Aerosmith, Britney Spears, what-have-you, Epitaph doesn't even exist. Bret Gurewitz is hardly some fatcat executive lighting cigars with 100$'s, and snorting coke out of a hooker's cleavage.
This is exactly what I'm talking about. It is impossible to acheive any measure of success in punk rock without becoming an object of hatred. It's insane...

The band had already fallen out with Gurewitz and decided to leave but they had already agreed to do one more album for Epitaph before all this happened. Columbia and Epitaph split the overseas and domestic sales. So, what I said was essentially correct.

That's a totally incorrect comparison. I mentioned The Ramones, probably the first real punk band (I'm aware the term is much older and of earlier bands like MC5, or the Velvets, but, for practical purposes..), The Sex Pistols, and the Clash, three of the earliest and most influential bands in the genre. Not only are the Pistols, Clash and Ramones punk, but they ARE punk. They codified it. As I said, the Pistols were the Robert Johnson's of punk.

Also, none of this has anything to do with the validity of what I've stated. You don't have to take my word for it, I've offered the best resources I know of if you're looking for attribution, please, feel encouraged.

The Offspring have much better "credentials' if you want to look at it that way, but either way that entails a very long and complex discussion (Which doesn't belong in this thread.) about what constitutes punk rock. I definitely also wouldn't say that Green Day are still punk, but I'd put everything up to about Warning in that box. The Offspring I would still consider punk as their style really hasn't changed much.

Stop right there. The fucking title said "Favorite PUNK Bands" the word Anarcho was NOT specified.
Anarchism and punk are two SEPERATE, INDIVIDUAL, however, complementary tendencies. Saying a band isn't punk because they aren't anarchists, or that they must be anarchists is retarded. This Stalinist purity test is equally retarded.
It has long been a source of amusement and dismay for me that a lot of punks, especially 'radical punks', are actually the biggest conformists one could hope to find.

Actually half of them are, most of the other half were for varying amounts of time. All of them originated from the underground scene. Also, the equation of signing to a major with selling out is somewhat dubious.

I like dozens of underground bands (I named 5 of them.) but I only got to pick 10. If you're looking for good underground bands I'd be happy to recommend some of my favorites.

Most? Sorry. Op Ivy, Social Distortion, the Germs, Cock Sparrer, and Bad Religion (Except for one album.) were/are all on indie labels. That's half the list right there.
The Offspring put out most of their best material on indie labels after signing after playing for 13 or 14 years or whatever, they came out of the underground scene.
Green Day also came out of the underground scene and started out on indie labels.
The Pistols couldn't get a solid deal with any distributors except Virgin, which was essentially just a tiny 'up and comer' at the time, and they didn't make any money, anyhow.
The Clash signed to a major but kept themselves in debt for over a decade, participated in countless benefit shows, .. Their politics were always front-and-center.
The Ramones also predate the punk indie label scene, but they were a cult phenomenon, they simply weren't that successful, in terms of modern rock and pop.

That has nothing to do with the bands themselves. I despise the staus quo as much as anybody, however, "popular" does not necessarily mean "bad." First of all, my mistake on the double post, I was trying to fix it, and... It was an accident.

Here we'd have to have a discussion about what being anti-capitalist in practice actually means. I don't think you even actually believe what you're asserting. In brief, we have been born into a society existing underneath massive and mostly oppressive and morally corrupt institutions. This is a reality we must come to grips with. I seriously doudt everyone else here assembled their computers from rocks and twigs and such. There is a dilineation between product and producer, between consumption, and being consumed. I think this is generally very poorly understood in the 'radical' punk community.

Independent, yes, but in a personal sense. This idea of building small, alternative media outlets was a later development. Also, it should be noted that this was originally more to do with necessity, as it was the only way to record and distribute this music.

Who are you talking about? The Offspring had an enormous fanbase after Smash, they had a falling out with the label owner. That's why they left. What evidence do you have that they changed their image in any way to become more marketable? The music didn't change. Again, I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Fine, but that doesn't really mean anything. There's no value in debating what music you or I find personally appealing.

Here's where you start to go off track. Punk is antiestablishment, as is , or, was, rock 'n roll, in fact, punk in many ways was a return to the basics of rock 'n roll. However, social consciousness in that sense is not necessarily a fundamental characteristic of punk rock. Early punk acts generally had very murky politics. That really started with the Clash, and later bands like Crass and Conflict adopted this tendency as many others have to verying degrees. It isn't necessarily ideological.

DUH Social D is/was on Epic, bad religion put out four albums on Atlantic. also cock sparrer's first single was on Decca. like i said, your opinons on music are invalidated to me by your love of crappy bands, so i dont feel a need to argue with you. Not to mention you never admit you are wrong about shit, even when you are proven that way, and you have to be right and an authority on every fucking thing. no thanks. go back to rocking out to your corporate punk bands, and ill return to my world.

That's quite a retreat from saying they were all 'corporate' bands. From what little digging I've done I found Social Distortion did put out three albums on epic, but presently remain with Time Bomb, which is where they started.
I was unaware that they had been on epic for awhile,(Never say 'never'...) however, they aren't anymore. I also was unaware that Bad Religion had THREE albums on Atlantic, probably because I got the reissue of "Recipie for Hate."
You're also correct that Cock Sparrer had ...ONE...single on Decca. However, this really doesn't change my fundamental argument. These are ESSENTIALLY indie bands. If that is how you define selling out, or going too far, if that's the limit, you're setting a kind of ridiculous standard.
I WAS right about Ixnay, I didn't see it as essential to mention that Epitaph and Columbia split the sales.
Again, the fact that I love several bands you consider 'crappy' should invalidate my knowledge on any particular subject, especially when I attribute information and encourage everyone to consult the primary sources is bogus.
Yes, I will continue listening to my corporate Germs.
Incidentally, I will also keep listening to Black Flag, the Dead Kennedys, Vice Squad, Husker Du, Bad Brains, and hundreds of other bands that didn't quite make it into my top 10.

3.5 by my count, but nomatter. I ACTUALLY conceded this earlier, something I supposedly NEVER do. Either way, it doesn't really make that much of a difference, this is quibbling over minutiae. What I find hilarious is people criticize how I communicate, then follow that up by going ten times further.

Because, as I said before, subsequent copies of Recipie For Hate are, and will continue to be, on Epitaph. I have one of the newer copies.
