Recently I've been reading quite a bit of science fiction. Mostly stuff by Isac Asimov and Larry Niven. Any other SF fans on this site? Got anything to recommend?

I personally enjoy hard science fiction, opposed to stories that pay no attention to scientific reality. I find it very amusing when Larry Niven explains the paradoxes of Superman, you can find it on youtube if you are interested...

Well, I created the Star Wars thread, so we already know I like that. I also like Star Trek (all the series), the Half-Life games, and Asimov's Robot series.

i like sci fi, if it seems plausible. one of the best tv shows in the last ten years (imo) was FIREFLY, which was sort of like star trek from the perspective of people who didn't want the world to be federated, so they live as outlaws and anarchists. Highly recomended.

Also, of course, the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy "trilogy' is probably my favorite series of books ever.

Well I'll state the obvious....Ray Bradbury was the shit when I was 6 7 8 9 etc. I mean I think that motherfucker infected me with anti-state, anti-authoritarian virus many many years before I discovered Punk Rock or Anarchism......

Anxiety I love you man! I love Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, I have the books, the radio script, the radio show, the TV series, and even the new movie (which has Zoey she is soooo beautiful). I am a huge Sci-fi fan both in print and on screen. I also love sci-fi fantasy stuff as well. I think it is awesome how many great people are on this site and that we share so much more than our love for anarcho-punk music and ideals.

Two of my favorite science fiction books are Ursula K. Le Guin's The Dispossessed and Tanith Lee's Biting the Sun. The former tells the tale of an anarchist diaspora separated by seven generations from their homeworld, where a capitalist nation and communist nation battle for hegemony in proxy wars. The latter is a look at a decadent far-future society in which people commit suicide for fun so they can be resurrected into new bodies.

Philip K. Dick is probably my favorite sci-fi author of all time. I'll echo Punkmar's sentiments on Bradbury: The Martian Chronicles set my imagination on fire when I was a pre-teen.

Yep, I'm a big sci-fi fan (fantasy as well). I'll go ahead and recommend Ken Macleod's books, more specifically his Fall Revolution series. Those books were basically my first exposure to anarchism.

Also agreed on the awesomeness of Firefly. Battlestar Galactica is my other favourite sci-fi TV show, and even though they're not exactly brilliant I love Stargate SG-1/Atlantis as well (Universe hasn't started showing here yet).

Neil Gaiman is awesome - anything by him. First Dune book is good, classic. I really liked Philip Pullman's His Dark Material Trilogy. Ender's Game is another classic.

hell yea, science fiction is the shiiiit. Babylon 5 anyone? ANYONE!?

Best sci-fi book i have read has to be Battlefield Earth, and another good one is where astronauts find a skeleton inside a space suit that was over 10,000 years old on the moon, that was pretty good. Also, Replay, good book.

Firefly was good. I loved how when they showed outside actions, you heard nothing, but inside the ship it was loud. Didnt dig the whole western thing though.

It is! And it was made into a film with... well can you work out who's under that make-up?

    [IMG] :lmao:

That's what religion does to you! I see he's proudly sporting his Federation merit badge on his shoulder.

I like early Greg Bear. Eon/Eternity, The Forge of God, and Blood Music are awsome hard sci-fi. 50's Richard Matheson still stands up. J.G. Ballard set new boundaries. I liked the early Cyberpunks too. William Gibson was great. But the master was always Philip K Dick. There's a thread of humanism running through his work that elevates it above all the others.

As to recent stuff, Check out Sum which is 40 very short imaginings of what a possible afterlife could be like. Not quite sci-fi perhaps, but so imaginative! That link lets you read the first two for FREE! :D

I'm a massive sci-fi geek whether it be TV shows, films or books. When it comes to books I think my favorite author right now is Iain M Banks. His culture series features a galaxy spanning anarchist civilisation called "The Culture". It's more in the realm of space-opera than hard sci-fi though I'm afraid. Well worth checking out all the same. There's a fan film set in the culture on youtube.

If you like hard sci-fi you should check out the Australian author Greg Egan. I've read two of his books, Quarantine and Incandescence, and enjoyed them both despite the fact that I apparently missed all the allegorical use of astro-physics. o_O

Science fiction is hit or miss for me, although I enjoy pulpy shit more than hard sci-fi. I'm a big fan of the Warhammer 40,000 novels written by Dan Abnett for example; nothing deep but fun as hell.

Firefly is awesome, as well as Battlestar Galactica. Star Wars too of course. I enjoy anime very much, and there's a lot of sci-fi shit in there!

Anyone seen a '70's sci-fi movie with Sean Connery called Zardoz? I was supposed to go to a one night screening of said movie but shit happened and couldn't go, did I miss anything?
*other than sean connery in a red diaper

I've been watching Doctor Who a lot lately. I've always loved sci-fi, and practically grew up on star wars/trek.

I actually have an autographed copy of Fahrenheit 451 with a personal letter. I guess my grandmother was very good friends with him.

Dr Who - some of the books are quite good
I like Star Trek - didn't like the Enterprise series. Some of the Next Gen, DS9 and Voyager books are a reasonable read.
Anything SF that Asimov wrote. He's got a style that is so easy to read.
The Dune Triology is a brilliant read.
