What part of the Devotchkas song is racist again? I'm reading it through and through, but I keep coming across "I don't care, white or black, this song is not a racial attack"

For those wondering sent LucidStrike a PM explaining the reasoning behind my post, seemed more personal that way.

Ok prejudiced, ignorant, or racist...take your pick....adding the line you quote doesn't excuse the stereotyping, and typical hatespeech that is used when in general describing Immigrants of any kind by supremacists or semisupremacists or closet supremacists....
sorry not trying to be an obsessed anti-nazi nazi but its just a little obvious to me that in conveying their anti-hip hop stance they mistakenly ( I hope) crossed the line

Hey man, I never denied that the song or the band could be racist. I and it seems no one else on here knows enough about them to say for sure. What I do know is that the song is extremely juvenile and poorly written, which with such a lack of talent for writing could easily have lead to a song that could be taken as a racist song. The point is I do not know, and they just don't seem worth my time, especially considering they have been broken up for years, there are a lot of other bands to target that we know are racist and who are still out there preaching hate.

All I am saying is that if you hate these girls so much, and claim that they are so racist, then what are their other songs like and about? What are actual statements made by the band about racism, or interviews that might give a hint to the actual views of the band. I do not consider a random persons blog on myspace to be a credible, factual source, that is a persons opinion, which could be totally off. Like I said I do not know. But I do think I remember them doing some stuff with Anti-Racist Action (I could be wrong, but it does sound like something I heard in passing).

So why are you hating me for questioning what you say, fuck dude I didn't even disagree with you, just saying that there is not enough facts to make a decision based on what is posted. As anarchists are we not supposed to question things, otherwise we are just blindly
following. I really want to know what I said or did to make you so upset.

IF I OFFENDED YOU I OFFER A SINCERE APOLOGY.

In my experience, when somebody says "I'm not racist, but...", they're about to say something that betrays them as racist or totally ignorant. Not to say that they're not being honest- they really don't think they are- but that doesn't mean it's true. That's how the line "I don't care, white or black, this song is not a racial attack" comes off to me. In any case, I don't think it's something to get pissed at someone over. Racism is deeply, deeply ingrained in American culture. So, to someone new to radical politics, some things that are super fucked, can slip right past them as "the norm". I think that kind of thing has happened to everyone- when you realized that something you see everyday and just live with is just fundamentally wrong. It's moments like that that cause anger and then growth.

Sorry, I didn't realize hip-hop kids were a species of their own now. I know plenty of people who had shit with hip-hop kids, not that all of them are jerks, but I can understand holding a little grudge against some of them. Remember that certain stereotypes can be based on reality, it's no surprise to me that the band members probably had to deal with people of the like they describe. Whether or not they generalize isn't much, most people do, even hardline anarcho-integrists. I can't see that only nazis or white supremacists have the monopoly of generalization...

Eh to be fair stereotypes wouldn't be so widely believed if there wasn't some truth to them, but some of those lyrics are pointing in the wrong direction...

You misunderstand monsiur, I don't fault them at all for attacking hip hop kids or even hip hop in general, I don't find that racist at all, though some might because it is an important part of Black culture. And I'll go as far as saying the lines get blurred sometimes between "hip hop kids" and straight out gangbangers. You say "Remember that certain stereotypes can be based on reality,..." I wouldn't give legitimacy to the stereotypes of parents of hip hop kids described in the song, it seems reduced to insulting and insulting our intelligence.

I'd just heard the song and wanted to rant a bit. It was just a short rant that's only become big deal because of contentions over it.

Your 'They're probably just inept and not actually racist' idea sounds like wishful thinking, at best.

I never said I hated anyone. I hate the band.

I only quoted that MySpace post because I didn't feel like typing my own interpretation at the time, and that individual had already pretty much said what I was thinking. What are you even asking for? A mathematical proof? For one thing, they weren't the most overtly political bunch, so interviews with them aren't exactly brimming with socio-political commentary. I did find this interesting bit in the only interview I could find online:

    http://www.acc.umu.se/~samhain/summerofhate/devotchkas.html

Contrary to what a lot of people like to think, self-described anti-racists can be racist, either because they're works in progress or because they really are just hypocrites. That said, I doubt it was them.

I never said I hated you. I told you what you did. Like I said, it wasn't about you having a dissenting opinion. That comment about me "reading too much into it" was dismissive and therefore disrespectful.

Anyway, I hate The Devotchkas. I don't get how that's overreacting. People hate/dislike bands for many different reasons, some very arbitrary. I hate this one because they made a racist song. I'm over it. They've been defunct forever.

I meant no disrespect. And I can't say that I like the band much either... but that is more for their cliche sound, and unoriginality. I don't know what I think about this song, maybe maybe not, I would need to care enough to look them up to make a decision on that. But I do see where you are coming from, and never meant to cause disrespect.

In fact I actually do respect you and think you are an intelligent person, I guess I just wanted to point out some other possibilities before we all jump to conclusions (unlike on the Bad Brains and homophobia thread where the issue is unfortunately pretty obvious)

We all love to rant nothing wrong with it.... sorry this became what it did, but you gotta admit it was fun seeing peoples varying views on it.
